The O Neill Country Historical Society's next talk of the year is The Great Famine on the Powerscourt Estate, Benburb, Part 3: Emigration and Epilogue, 1848-50'
The final talk in Dr Donal McAnallen's trilogy will investigate the reasons and workings of the Benburb Powerscourt Estate's assisted emigration scheme, carried out in the spring of 1849. Details of the 200-plus families who left on the Elizabeth and Helen Thompson ships for New York will be disclosed. How much were they forced out, or did they see it as an escape? Finally, the enduring effects of Famine and flight on the Benburb district, not least population change, will be examined closely.
Please come along to the Benburb Priory on Thursday 20th June in the Bruce Room to hear the final part, about this terrible period of our history.

Thankyou Emma. Benburb priory is indeed a special place. X
IT'S BEEN A WHILE since I spent so much of the day outdoors, but today saw us take a very spontaneous spin over to Benburb Priory where after a chat with the lovely Fr Bill from Bath in England, I was very honoured to be blessed by the relic of St Peregrine, patron saint of people suffering from cancer, which is kept in the beautiful Chapel there.
Wow. How special. It was a very moving experience for which I am very grateful. 🙏
We have such beauty on our doorstep here in Tyrone, so we took a walk by the hypnotic River Blackwater, before heading onto Craigavon hospital for the first of my twice weekly chemo treatment. And then home for a 23rd birthday dinner for Dualta. 🎂🎈A busy day! Happy birthday Dualta!
Thank you so much as always for all your kind words, messages, gifts and flowers which really help keep my spirits up more than you will ever know. The kindness and love I'm feeling has been phenomenal, and it never goes unnoticed.
I'm almost half way there on my 6mth chemotherapy programme before the big stem cell transplant in September/October in Belfast, and apart from a few yukky side effects I'm going strong as best I can! 💪
