SUPPORT SADDLER STREET! Part 2
What do you think makes Saddler Street special?
During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries Saddler Street was home to several theatres. Two were accessible by an alleyway or ‘vennel’ named Drury Lane, behind the building now occupied by and .
The third theatre was on the opposite side of the street behind an inn now named . Its managers included the famed actor Stephen Kemble, the namesake of next door.
In the eighteenth century, Saddlers Yard was the site of a factory which produced the famous Durham mustard (now Colmans English Mustard), made by Mrs Clements and admired by King George 1st. cafe now occupies this historic space.
SUPPORT SADDLER STREET!
Durham City is really a tiny town. We only have a few streets, and with many store closures in recent years, it’s been challenging for a lot of our local independent businesses. Saturday June 24th is Shop Independent Day, so if possible, please be big and shop small. Small businesses are essential to the UK economy, generating £1.6 trillion and employing 16 million people. With support from ‘s and campaigns we can all help grow local businesses and boost the economy.
We are very lucky to be situated on the historic pilgrims’ route of Saddler Street, just a stottie’s* throw away from the UNESCO world heritage site of the castle and cathedral. Our little corner of Durham is bustling with small indies who are proudly flying the flag to promote local business, community and inclusivity.
