North East Slings
Founded in July 2011 we are the oldest sling library in the NE of England. We are based in Durham City but serve the whole region and beyond.
The North East Sling Library is the oldest sling library in the North East with a large collection of slings and carriers for you to borrow. Appointment must be booked to attend. This is 15 minutes long. From May 1st 2023, sling hire is £15 for 4 weeks. Longer Carrying consultations are available to offer 1:1 dedicated support. Postal hire and video appointments can also be arranged. If you have a

🎄 BABY WEARING NIGEL 🎄
Nigel was really keen on the slings displayed by North East Slings and even tested them out himself!
When you hire a sling, you do so agreeing to return it. Unfortunately this morning, for the 3rd time in our history, I have just filed an online money claim. I post slings across the country but one has not come back and no contact since October.
I hate when it gets this far, but we have no choice. I would rather talk to you to find resolutions when there are difficulties than get ignored.
Awesome mama
Woman receives diploma with 10-day-old baby tucked in graduation gown "I’d worked hard for this degree, and I was determined to walk with the rest of my class … so I just brought her to graduation with me,” said Grace Szymchack.
Charlie needs some support with tandem carrying the elves tonight. Ginger and Sugarplum needed a carry but a few tweaks are definitely needed here.
Just 1 appointment left with Rachel in 2023 before we close for Christmas.
4.20pm on Saturday 16th December for 15 minute sling library appointment. Message to book.
Postal Hires - with added Christmas sparkly packaging - last posting dates
Our final day for postal hires will be Wednesday 20th December for tracked 24 delivery. Special delivery available up to Thursday 21st December. We are then closed for postal hire until 3rd January.
Full details on Royal Mail last posting dates can be viewed here https://www.royalmail.com/christmas/last-posting-dates
Long term users of the library will know that we close completely for the Christmas period. There are only 2 dates in December where you can visit Rachel. Appointments available on 2nd and 16th December.
Postal hire will also be closed from 20th December to 2nd January. We will not be online as often either, so messages and emails may take a few days to reply too.
Have you been to Lumiere this year? We have been to see the installations in Bishop Auckland this evening before heading in to Durham tomorrow. We are passed the days of carrying but it definitely made it easier when we visited when boys are little.
🚨 BE CAREFUL ONLINE 🚨
Be careful where you get your carrying support. What I mean by this is not everything you see or watch online is correct or safe.
😞There are many brands out there that focus more on pretty pictures than safety. There are many brands that I refuse to stock, share or recommend because of this.
📸 But also across social media, there are many brands, influencers and carrying parents who share videos and pictures.
😏 But, they are not always showing or giving safe and correct information. Just because it looks pretty, doesn't mean it's right.
😟Over the years I've seen many new parents who love carrying and want to share their passion, that's great. But please be careful creating 'tutorials' and sharing tips.
😯 They may have a child that's used to being carried and will sit nice so they wrap for that situation. Someone watching the video may have a wriggly child and need to add or change something.
👍 What they are sharing may work for them, but it doesn't mean it's going to work for everyone. Also if you are sharing 'tutorials' and have no insurance, you may be liable for any issues. What about looking into peer training if you want to support others?
🫤 Also beware babywearing groups, but that's in another post!
👉 Please follow your local sling library or consultant or find one you like. But ensure they are trained.
🥰 I would love to share a video of everything all the time but I also have to be careful of what I shared online. That's why booking a tailored 1:1 session is so valuable!
🤗 If you are every unsure or need support please get in touch.

This Friday (17th November) Maddy will be at Tumble Gymnastics and Activity Centre in Benton for all your sling needs. Book via the link below or message the page for more information
£900 worth of carriers due back yesterday have not been returned or renewed.
4 families have been in touch but that is 4 that have not responded to text messages x 2, or emails from Myturn with remainder or overdue email.
Please get in touch asap so I can update records. I work full time in addition to running the library. I shouldn’t have to chase.
Only 40 once. Having a great birthday extended weekend.
I won’t be around for the next few days as it’s my 40th birthday tomorrow and I am going to enjoy celebrating.
If you message between now and Sunday, I’m not ignoring you but hey you are only 40 once.
🚨 CARRYING SAFETY 🚨
Using a snowsuit or pramsuit in a sling or carrier can be dangerous! It may be tempting to wrap baby up when being carried but you forget that they are attached to a radiator... You!
❗Pramsuits and snowsuits are only for in a pram, when baby has no other heat source and open to the elements.
❗When baby is in a carrier, they are getting all the heat from your body as you are moving and walking. You all know how hot you can get when carrying, especially if you have those post birth flushes!
Let's look more at the why it's dangerous..
‼️Overheating, the major one. All of baby's heat is trapped in the suit and will get warmer with your body heat too. A baby will not be able to tell you they are too hot and probably fall asleep.
‼️ Poor positioning, with a thick padded suit or jacket, it will effect the position of baby in the carrier, they will end up in a starfish position instead of a nice supported seated carry. This can cause a carrier or sling to not fit securely or safely.
This can also be uncomfortable for you and baby.
‼️ Slumping, with all the padding and poor positioning, baby may end up slumping down into the suit or carrier causing an asphyxiation risk.
🥶If you want to keep baby and you warm in the cold, layer up! Layers are easy to open or take off depending what you are doing.
🚨Also remember that the same applies for carseats!
Check out a babywearing jacket or cover instead too. Not sure and need more help? Just get in touch, no judgement atall, I'll help you find a solution that works for you.
👉Check out my other blog, that has all the options for carrying in the cold and covers all budgets.

“Just to say thank you - made it to Canada with the absolutely essential help of the sling when flying solo!”
Bringing out the big guns. Brought a Ecover refill (142 washes) bottle and topped up the empty bottle. Sling library wash days will carry on for a while.

If you message me on my mobile, please can you add your name and what sling you have. Myturn doesn’t let me search by mobile number and my phone doesn’t always know who it is. Sometimes Siri suggests but not always.
Chocolate isn’t a necessity when sling is returned but last three postal hires have come back with chocolate. Today, my favourite.
I am glad we could help Katie.
World Mental Health Day (10 Oct) is a day to talk about mental health and show everyone that mental health matters. It’s also a day to let people know that it’s okay to ask for help, no matter what you’re going through.
Did you know, we wash every carrier when it’s returned?
It saves you having to wash and means we know they have been washed ready for next hire. Saturday’s are always get my wash basket empty as quickly as possible so I can get the slings in.
We are fully booked tomorrow but plenty of spaces on 21st October.
Remember, library runs around my full time teaching job so I am limited to when I can offer appointments. There will be some availability on the Monday and Tuesday of half term. Watch this space.
Thank you Kendal for sharing this photo. Kendal and Peter borrowed the Beco Gemini Cool for some later summer sunshine. She said, “we got great use out of it, especially at the airport and for some beach walks.”
After a rough few weeks, receiving this note and chocolate with a sling return has really cheered me up. Thank you Corrie. Glad I could help you and your boys find the twin slinging love.
Postal Hire unavailable from Thursday 29th September to Sunday 1st October as I am travelling home for my Nana’s funeral.
I will also have limited access to messages during this period. Sorry if your enquiry isn’t responded to quickly but as you can imagine I want to spend the time with my family.
How is this 11 years ago? Isaac and l were inpatients in treetops ward at UHND. Oscha Zen Roses was grabbed as we headed to A&E after 111 call. It became a blanket, a wrap and comforter. Here we are trying skin to skin to help regulate his sky high temperature and encourage him to feed while we waited for lumber puncture. Scary times and I was as tired as I look.
Sorry but Maddy is still too unwell to do the rearranged session at Tumble Gymnastics on Friday. Get well soon Maddy.
We have had a pretty awful week as a family, but my niece is making me smile. Her doll is rocking a seated sidewards carry and look at Ivy’s smile.
A reminder we have had to cancel our session at Tumble Gymnastics and Activity Centre this morning as Maddy is unwell.
Tumble and Maddy have said they can do next Friday instead. I have contacted those with bookings but anyone who was going to drop in, please don’t go today but you are welcome next week.
Unfortunately, Maddy is unwell and we need to cancel tomorrow’s session at Tumble Gymnastics and Activity Centre. Please do not turn up as there will be no one to help.
We are hoping to move this a week later but waiting for confirmation. Rachel will be in touch with anyone who has a sling due back or was booked for tomorrow.
What are you doing today? I have been for a short run (no GNR for me) and am now folding slings in the sunshine.
Rachel is fully booked for September now.
Booking from 7th October onwards.
Last call for tomorrows postal hire pile. Please message me before 8.30am with which sling you would like, if you’d like to hire and go tomorrow.

“The Wedding” Sling has been to another. It’s been very popular this summer and has spent the entirety of June, July, August and start of September on hire. This sling means so much to me that every photo of it in use fills my heart with joy.
Thank you for sharing Bethany.
Bethany said: “We didn’t manage a great fit as I popped him in while asleep but I was so glad I got to use it and got these special photos. We got some lovely comments too. Thank you”

You can book a slot with her via our booking site or by messaging page. It is also possible to turn up and wait on the day too.
