Last night Retford would play their last game of the season – playing a long-term Division One opponent, Loxley.

Retford started the game in a strong fashion, moving the ball well and finding the open man, with four of Retford’s starters getting on the scoreboard in the first. Cooper Harrison leading the way with ten points in the quarter. The combination of Dan Kitchen and Andy West did a good job rebounding, whilst high intensity defence made life difficult for Loxley. Retford would lead 23-12 after one.

In the second Retford continued in a similar vein Matt Sadler would find Gaz Moffatt in the paint for back-to-back baskets, meanwhile, the post players would link up, Gaz finding Dan for four points in the quarter from the low post. An excellent defensive showing held Loxley to 8 points seeing Retford lead 38-20 at the half.

Things would change however in the third. Loxely changed their defensive approach and their man-to-man play did a better job sowing down Tyler Lister who despite his fourteen first half points, would be held to just one basket in the quarter. Whilst Cooper continued his hot shooting, a massive 37-12 quarter for Loxley would change the momentum of the game significantly.

With several players in foul trouble the fourth would be a challenge for Retford. Kane Sanders-Bailey’s offence helped to push the tempo, scoring in transition as Retford started to claw back the Loxley advantage. After Andy would foul out late in the fourth, Retford had one final push – bringing the game back within 6. A transition opportunity for Retford to reduce the lead to four was lost as a result of a turnover that would be punished on the other end, then an off the ball foul form Retford gave away three costly free-throws. The lead was back at 11 and couldn’t be recovered
Final Score: Retford 68 – 76 Loxley

When Retford played Team Nook just three weeks ago, they were able to recover from a 25 points deficit, but despite bringing the game within just 3 points late in the fourth, Retford couldn’t complete what would have been an exceptional come back to win the game… Last night Retford would face the same opponent. Nook missing some players, having only lost two games all season would still prove to be a challenging opponent.

The first quarter saw both teams missing shots early on. After a time out to re-group Retford picked up the energy levels and managed to start putting points on the board. Four different scorers in the quarter saw Retford’s balanced offence led by Cooper Harrison with five points, take a narrow 14-11 lead after the first.

As the teams exchanged baskets in the second, Retford looked to go smaller, bringing Julian Leung and Matt Sadler into the game, with a view to pushing the pace offensively. Tyler Lister would benefit, getting out in transition, scoring twelve in the quarter, and was well supported by Julian who added five points himself. Despite the increased tempo, Team Nook would still hang around however – Retford leading 36-31 at the half.

Retford wanted to make the most of their two big men in the third quarter, running their offence through Andy West and Dan Kitchen who would link up for a high-low attack. With the Nook defence having to adapt to the system, Cooper and Alex Espin would find themselves with more room to play, knocking down six and five quarter points respectively. When Retford thought the game was almost out of reach for Nook, a sloppy three-minute stint at the end of the quarter allowed what was an 18-point lead to be reduced to just 8 going into the final quarter.

Nook continued their momentum into the fourth and following more Retford turnovers, had brought the game to within just four. With Dan fouling out of the game, Coach Sadler called a time out with five minutes to go in the game, appealing for calm heads and patience from the team – and that’s exactly what the team delivered late on. Relying on their go-to scorers, Tyler and Alex down the stretch, most notably Tyler’s three three-pointers, Retford’s game management in the crucial last three minutes of the game was good, and enough to put the game to bed.

Final Score: Retford 74 – 61 Team Nook

31/05/2024

Last night would prove to be a difficult day at the office for Retford, who came up against the vastly experienced, long-time Division 1 side, Sheffield Storm.

The game started tentatively with both sides struggling to get good looks and defence setting the tone. Retford missing a number of key scorers were always going to rely on Alex Espin and Tyler Lister, who set the tone early, being Retford's only scorers in the first. Retford would keep the game competitive, trailing 14-10 heading at the end of one.

The second quarter would be much of the same with the addition of Andy West scoring in the low post, to help with the load, but despite a combined 12 in the quarter from Alex and Tyler, the defence started to be exposed and Storm were able to extend their lead to 37-24 at half time.

The third quarter saw other players step up their offensive game, Gaz Moffat shooting 3 for 3 in the quarter for 6 points and Cooper Harrison knocking down a big three-pointer, but again, the Storm were able to score at ease, benefiting from too many second-chance points and free throws resulting from Retford's reactive defence.

With a 26 point lead going into the fourth, the game was all but over. Retford made a defensive change and moved to a two Point Guard system, with both Cooper Harrison and Matt Sadler on court together, looking to get better offensive ball movement. Improvements came, with Retford having both their best offensive and defensive quarter of the game, and winning the quarter, but it was far too little, too late as Reford would lose a difficult game 76-51.

24/05/2024

Last night Retford played against Sheffield Elite, a team that beat them in a closely contested game earlier in the season. With the players available to Retford, the balance of the team would be hard to get right with a surplus of post players and a lack of perimeter scoring - a slower paced, defensive approach to the game would have to be key.

Retford started the game in the worst possible way, down 6-0 after just 20 seconds then 9-2 after 60 seconds. Sheffield Elites three point shooters were on fire early on, and this would continue all quarter. Quickly finding themselves down double digits, Retford were able to get points on the board through effective post play from Alex Espin, Andy West and Kris Jackson, however after having trailed by as many as 16, they would find themselves losing by 12 at the end of the first.

The second quarter saw Retford’s defence communicate better, identifying and reacting to Elite’s perimeter scorers, rotating better and contesting the three ball. Elite found it hard to drop shots like they had in the first. Tyler lister got hot offensively, dropping 12 in the quarter including a transition dunk, and helped Retford reduce the defecit to 37-33 at half time.

The third quarter saw Tyler continue to lead the offensive charge, with Alex and Dan Kitchen also making valuable contributions, but it was the defence that really shone. Retford were utilising a defensive system, which as the game progressed, they clearly became more comfortable with it, and the roles of each player, limiting Elite to just three field goals in the quarter. With 0.8 seconds left in the quarter, Coach Sadler would call a timeout out and draw up a play to get the team a good offence. The team ran it to perfection with Gaz Moffat inbounding, finding Alex at the basket for a score at the buzzer - seeing Retford take a 51-45 lead into the final quarter.

The final quarter saw a more balanced offence with Cooper Harrison, Gaz, Dan and Alex all helping Tyler with the scoring load. A patient, methodical offence saw good looks coming both in the post and from the perimeter, but again it was Retford’s defence that was making the difference. After giving up 29 points in the first quarter, holding Elite to 11 points in the 2nd half, just 3 points in the fourth quarter was nothing short of a defensive masterclass and reminiscent of the historical Retford sides of the past that aimed to win games by holding the opponent under 50 points.

Final Score: Retford 63 - 48 Sheffield Elite

14/05/2024

With Doncaster League complete for the 23/34 season, attention turned to Sheffield League last night, where Retford would play a strong Team Nook side, who have only lost one game so far this season.

After an early 4 point lead for Retford, Retford struggled to find the pace of the game and offensively were plagued by turnovers and missed shots. Team Nook took full advantage and behind an 18-0 run raced out to a demanding 27-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter saw improvements on offence from Retford. Kane Sander-Bailey scoring 5 points early, before three consecutive baskets by Retford veterans Gas Moffatt and Matt Sadler helped to keep adding points to the scoreboard. Despite this however, Team Nook's ball movements was excellent, and saw Retford's zone defence struggling to get out to the three-point shooters. They would stretch their lead further to a 51-26 advantage at the half way point.

A change to Retford's defence at half time made a real impact. Behind Andy West playing a crucial defensive role in only his first Sheffield League game for Retford - the team would rally. Cooper Harrison would drop 5 points in the quarter and back to back assists from him saw Retford deliver their best offensive quarter of the game, winning the quarter 22-13, seeing them trail by 16 going into the final quarter.

Retford knew that they would be relying on their defence to get them back into the game - and they did just that. Team Nook were held scoreless for the first 6 minutes of the quarter whilst Alex Espin and Tyler Lister both led the offence with 9 and 8 points respectively.

After defensive stop after defensive stop, Alex hit a huge three pointer with under a minute ago, to bring the game within 3 points. On defence Tyler and Cooper pressured the ball resulting in a steal from Tyler, but as he attacked the basket, contact was made, with no foul given, resulting in him turning the ball over. With less than 12 seconds to go, Retford would have to foul - where Team Nook, who scored just a single field goal in the final quarter, would close out the game from the free throw line.

Final Score: Retford 65 - 70 Team Nook

Last night Retford would play their final regular season game in Doncaster League, with fourth spot already cemented. A number of last-minute player dropouts for Retford would mean a tough opponent, Seahawks, would be a formidable challenge. Retford started the game in a solid fashion matching Seahawks basket for basket – Alex Espin leading the way for Retford, with some valuable post contributions for Gaz Moffatt. The quarter would finish with Retford trailing 16-17.

The second quarter saw some personnel changes with veterans Matt Sadler and Dan Hobden entering the game. A good defensive intensity saw Retford match Seahawks physicality and were able to get out in transition – Tyler Lister benefitting with 12 personal points in the quarter. A close half finished 32-35 in favour of Seahawks.

The third quarter saw Alex Espin on the bench as a result of foul trouble impacting Retford’s ability to lock down defensively. As they tried to focus their defence on the paint, it opened up long range scoring opportunities for Seahawks who were able to knock down four consecutive three-pointers to open the game up entirely. Offensively Julian Leung was able to support Tyler’s scoring, but a 9-point quarter advantage for Seahawks saw them head into the final quarter with a twelve point lead.

Tyler started the fourth strong for Retford hitting his first couple of shots, but following a made three-pointer from Gary Mears Retford lost their discipline and after a scuffle between teams, ended up with three technical fouls, including a second for Alex Espin, meaning he would have to leave the game. With already tired legs, from this point a comeback was beyond Retford – with Seahawks continued hot shooting adding insult to injury.

Final Score: Retford 61 – 88 Seahawks

Following a 35-point win over Falcons last week, Retford knew that Falcons would look to come back stronger. The desire to bolster their league position with only a couple of games in the Doncaster season remaining, and the return to the court of Wes Skaines – Retford really didn’t need any additional motivation coming into this game. They would get it however…

Inside the first two minutes of the game, Joel Days would score Retford’s first 5 points. His man-to-man defence on one of Falcons longest serving players and league veterans would prove too much – as the response was to act out with aggression and be overly physical with Joel, who is playing men’s league basketball at only 15. This didn’t sit too kindly with Retford. After a brief hiatus whilst the referee refused to continue the game on his own (welcome to the joys of local league basketball) and plenty of words were exchanged between both teams, the game would continue with added spice. Retford taking instruction from Coach Sadler to run their full court trap defence – and trap they did, Tyler Lister and Kane Sander-Bailey finding baskets in transition, as well as a three pointer from Gary Mears off the bench saw a competitive quarter end with Retford ahead 23-17.

As the second quarter started Retford wanted to be more aggressive with the trap, hunting down the ball after every made basket. Falcons had no answer for the pressure and repeatedly turned the ball over. Wes Skaines would score 8 points in the quarter. Joel Days after a brief spell on the bench would return to the game with a point to prove and scored 13 in the quarter, whilst Alex Espin would add 7. The intensity was too much for Falcons who would lose the quarter 36-7 and see them down 59-24 at half time.

The third quarter would see Retford continue to do what was working for them. Gary, Tyler and Cooper Harrison proving particularly effective within the press – forcing countless Falcons turnovers. Offensively, Kane would add 7 points to the tally whilst Tyler added 11. A 27 - 9 quarter was only let down by Cooper having to leave the game with an ankle injury.

With a 53-point lead already, Retford weren’t about to give up the intensity and were still demanding more of each other. A broken Falcons side continued to turn the ball over and would only manage 6 points in the quarter, meanwhile a balanced attack from Retford saw Wes, Joel, Kane, Tyler and Alex all add to their personal tallies – with Joel finishing on a game high 36, ironic given the start to the game and a testament to his resilience, and the teams togetherness.

Retford would match the leagues single game, season high points tally, and produce the season’s biggest margin of victory as they won in demanding fashion, 108-39.

03/04/2024

After a tough run of three consecutive loses, Retford were looking to bounce back last night as they met Falcons, a team who got the better of them when they met earlier in the season, in Doncaster League.

The game would start slowly, with both teams feeling each other out and trying to gauge where scoring opportunities would come from. Defences were on top, as both sides slowly exchanged baskets. After an opening quarter where four of Retford’s starting five, all found their way onto the score sheet, Retford would lead 13-10 after the first.

In the second quarter a four on four off substitution helped to tighten the Retford defence and allowed for the team to get out in transition. Kane Sanders-Bailey, having not played in a month was able to get some momentum scoring six in the quarter, complemented by five points from Tyler Lister. Retford would close out the quarter with a 6-0 run to see them lead 29 - 19 at the half way point.

Retford came out in the second half aggressive, and looking to put the game to bed. A fluid offence saw the ball rotate well and find the open man. Cooper Harrison in just his second game for Retford led the offence scoring eight of his thirteen points in the quarter, as well as a number of assists. Cooper was also instrumental defensively, pressuring the ball in tandem with Tyler, forcing Falcom turnovers, leading to easy transition baskets. Tyler dropped twelve points in the quarter which Retford would win 30-14 and take a commanding 26 point lead into the fourth.

Retford didn’t let up in the fourth, and were determined to finish the game strong. An excellent defensive showing saw Falcons held to only four points in the quarter, representing Retford’s best defensive quarter of the season. Offensively, Joel Days lead the line, scoring 9 of his 18 points in a 6 minute window, meanwhile Gary Mears was able to knock down a three pointer, and Dan Kitchen was able to score in the paint.

A strong finish to the game saw Retford comfortable 72-37 winners.

28/03/2024

Retford would have another tough day at the office last night, as they would again play League-Leading Scunthorpe. Despite the disappointing result, Retford would take some positives from the game – Cooper Harrison would make his Retford debut, and it was also positive to see Andrius Blazys and Dan Hobden take back to the court for the first time in months!

Both teams started the game slowly with missed shots, slow physical defence, and little opportunity to play in transition. Following an early time out, Retford were able to get some momentum behind baskets from Tyler Lister and Alex Espin, which would see a low scoring quarter end 13-8 in favour of Scunthorpe.

In the second, Retford found better opportunities to score the basketball. Two three-pointers from Joel Days helped him to 10 points for the quarter with value post contributions coming from Gaz Moffatt and Dan Kitchen. Unfortunately, however, the Retford defence struggled to contain the inside-outside threat posed by Scunthorpe who would win the quarter 28-15 to see them lead by 18 at the half.

The third quarter would be a tough one for Retford. Whilst the Scunthorpe offence kept rolling, Retford’s own offence dried up. Joel was able to knock down a couple more shots and Julian Leung contributed from the bench but another 8 point offensive showing had seen Scunthorpe’s lead jump to 38 ahead of the fourth.

With the game already well decided, Retford deserved credit for continuing to play through to the final buzzer. Gary Mears was able to knock-down a couple of three-pointers whilst Joel added another 14 points to finish with a team high 28 points. The fourth proved to be Retford’s strongest offensive quarter with 23 points, but the inability to limit Scunthorpe defensively saw Retford take a tough 101-55 loss.

13/03/2024

There is no full match report, however yesterday Retford suffered a huge 96-51 loss to Doncaster League Leaders OBC. After Retford had beaten them just a matter of weeks previously, OBC were clearly looking for retribution and with a team stacked with National League level talent and experience, they played an excellent game from start to finish, shooting an especially high percentage, despite Retford's best defensive efforts.

Retford continue to be plagued by injuries, having only six players available, 4 of whom over the age of 40, and one, Andy, making his debut for Retford in the most challenging of circumstances. Joel Days led Retford's scoring with 21 in a strong personal showing, followed by Tyler Lister with 14.

All credit to OBC who were by far the better team on the night.

21/02/2024

Last night Retford would play a familiar adversary in the form of Sheffield Storm in a Sheffield Basketball League, Division 1 clash. In contrast to more recent struggles, pleasingly Retford were able to put out a strong side, with 9 players available including Wes Skaines and Joel Days - Wes playing his first game for Retford this season and Joel making his Sheffield League debut after a strong showing in his Doncaster League debut for Retford just 6 days ago!

Despite the strong line up, Retford started the game poorly missing shots and remaining scoreless after a three and a half minutes. A time out looked to settle Retford who eventually dropped their first basket to see them trail 2-10. A stronger close to the quarter saw a low scoring, tight affair level at 10 after the first quarter.

The second quarter continued in the same tight fashion, with both defences on top and a lack of transition opportunities. As the game became pricklier and more physical Tyler Lister looked to carry the scoring burden scoring 10 points in the quarter. With temperatures rising and referees struggling to control the game a scrappy first half ended with Retford trailing 25-26.

Joel showed the hot hand in the third quarter, dropping consecutive three-pointers to open a small lead for Retford. He would score 9 in the quarter. Retford also changed defensive approach to better try and handle Storm’s post play and limit their second chance points which were keeping them in the game. Whilst the change was helping, two late quarter shots from Storm closed the gap and both teams would go into the final quarter level at 40.

Storm started the fourth quarter strongly. The first three minutes of the quarter saw them open up a 10-point lead with Retford seemingly on the ropes. A Retford time out was called appealing for calm. Wes Skaines and Joel Days would re-enter the game trying to trigger the comeback. Just three minutes later the lead was just four after Tyler Lister hit two big three-pointers.

With Alex Espin looking to assert his dominance for Retford, he would prove too much for Storm in the paint, who could only foul him. He knocked down 4 out of 6 free throws to tie the game with just 35 seconds to play. Despite Retford’s defence hounding Storm, they were able to knock down a three-pointer with 22 seconds left in the game.

Coach Sadler would call his final time out – asking for a trust in the offence, and asking that whoever get the open shot be comfortable to step up and shoot the ball. And that’s exactly what happened. A patient, well worked offence saw the ball rotate to Joel on the weak-side who at just 15 years old had the confidence to knock down the three-pointer, levelling the game with just 8 seconds remaining.

A Storm time out would proceed what would be the final play of the game. The message for Retford was clear. Trust your defence and don’t foul. 7 seconds of outstanding defence limited Storm’s opportunities, but in the final second of the game Alex Espin rushed to the corner attempting to close out on a long two-point attempt for Storm, fouling him in the process, with both players hitting the floor hard. As both teams reacted the referees made two vital calls – firstly two shots for Storm who were fouled in the act of shooting. Secondly, a technical foul for Storm’s coach who had left his bench in frustration and anger at the foul.

Retford would shoot the technical free throw first. Tyler Lister stepping up and calmly knocking down the shot to give Retford a one-point advantage. Now Storm’s turn to shoot their two free throws – needing one to send the game to overtime, or both to win the game. With both shots missing and time expired Retford had gone on to achieve a close 1-point victory following a 10-point, fourth quarter deficit.

Final Score: Retford 56 - 55 Storm

15/02/2024

Last night Retford (or those who were allowed to play), would spend Valentine's Evening facing off against Seahawks in Doncaster League.

The game started at high intensity, which saw Seahawks open up an early 11-2 advantage. Retford did however settle and started to come back into the game, courtesy of 9 of his 24 total points coming in the quarter from Joel Days, making his Doncaster League debut for Retford. Retford trailed 19-23 after one.

The second quarter saw a defensive improvement from Retford who made post scoring difficult for Seahawks. Whilst Joel and Tyler Lister continued to keep scoreboard moving, valuable contributions from veteran Gaz Moffatt and Gary Mears off the bench, helped Retford to win the quarter 19-13 and lead 38 - 36 at the half way point.

The third quarter would prove challenging for Retford. With both Alex Espin and Gaz Moffatt in foul trouble, Retford were only able to play with one big man at a time, something the tall and physically strong Seahawks team were able to exploit, with repeat offensive rebounds and second chance points. Seahawks win the quarter and go into the final quarter ahead by 6.

The fourth quarter saw Retford trail by as many as 10, but unwilling to give up the fight. As they have done for 15+ years, Matt Sadler would link up with Gas Moffatt, finding him in the paint for his trademark free throw line jump shot on back to back scores.

Tyler Lister also got hot, dropping 12 points in the quarter putting Retford ahead by 2, with just moments to play. After a big three-pointer by Seahawks, Tyler would make one last clutch basket for Retford, to bring them within 1 point - scoring with 29 seconds on the clock. Unfortunately a decision made to play the final quarter as running clock, due to pressures on court time, meant that whilst Retford believed there to be no need to foul, the referees allowed the game clock to expire, without a shot clock violation, seeing the game end in controversial fashion and to Retford's frustration.

Final Score: Retford 70 - 71 Seahawks

07/02/2024

The Doncaster Basketball league splits into two separate divisions at the halfway point of the season, with the top 5 teams forming Division One and the bottom 4 teams forming Division 2. With a record of 5-4 over the first half of the season, Retford would be the 5th and final team into Division 1 and would spend the second half of the season only playing games against the four teams that had beat them already this season…

Last night was the first of those games, facing an OBC side that finished the first half of the season, top of the table and with an undefeated record of 9-0. Both teams would go into the game short-handed with only 6 players available.

OBC started the first quarter strongly, knocking down contested shots and opening up a 7-point lead. Retford took time to settle into the flow of the game and react to OBC’s man to man defence, but eventually found some rhythm through the hot shooting of Tyler Lister who would score 12 in the quarter, supported by 5 points from Alex Espin. The quarter would finish with Retford slightly ahead at 19-17.

The second quarter saw a drop in the pace of scoring for both sides. Retford changed their defence and made opportunities in the paint difficult for OBC to come by, and in doing so were able to open up a 10-point advantage. The latter part of the quarter however saw Retford uncharacteristically miss several lay-up opportunities, enabling OBC to take advantage and open up an 8-0 run to finish the half still trailing by just 2, at 29-27.

In the third quarter the hot shooting from Tyler continued, meanwhile Kane Sander-Bailer started to find his touch, knocking down shots and attacking the basket. The turning point of the quarter, and likely the game however, came when OBC’s leading scorer received a technical foul for arguing with the referee and was then subsequently ejected for his adverse reaction to the technical. Retford rallied of the back of this and put together a 12-2 run to close the quarter and would head into the fourth leading 52-38.

The fourth quarter, Retford were determined not to let their advantage slip. They raised their tempo, pushed the ball in transition and made the extra pass to exploit OBCs tired defence. Tyler would knock down four three-pointers in the quarter (seven for the game), seeing him finish with a game high 41, whilst Kane would add a couple of his own three-pointers (five for the game) as Retford caught fire, winning the quarter 30-15 and finishing the game with a comprehensive 82-53 win.

06/01/2024

Last night Retford started 2024 in the hardest possible fashion, facing last years Division 1 winners and currently undefeated this season, G-Corp, made harder still with 3 players having to drop out for Retford just before the game started.

Retford started the game well. Jack Halstead started the game hot, scoring 9 points in the quarter. Retford would score 23 in the quarter and trail by just 3 points as the second quarter began.

Retford continued to shoot the ball well into the 2nd with Tyler Lister finding his rhythm and scoring 10, and with Kris Jackson knocking down two three pointers. It was defensively however where Retford struggled. G-Corp barely missed a shot, scored 32 in the quarter to see them ahead by 14 at halftime.

Kane Sander-Bailey came into the 3 quarter with the hot hand, taking advantage of his defensive mismatch on his way to 9 points in the quarter. G-Corp’s offence slowed somewhat, but they had stretched their lead to 20 going into the final quarter.

With the game pretty much put to bed, both sides played out an even fourth quarter, which would see G-Corp finish the game 100-80 winners.

Last night Retford would play against a new opposition, SeaHawks who would go into the game positioned 2nd in the Doncaster League table.

The first quarter was tight affair, with both teams learning the tendencies of each other. SeaHawks looking to their post play to ignite their offence, meanwhile Retford looked to exploit whatever transition opportunities were there for them. SeaHawks finished the quarter slightly ahead 19-15.

The second quarter continued to remain close. Retford did a better job with defensive rebounding and limited SeaHawk’s second chance opportunities. Tyler Lister carried Retford’s offence load with 12 points in the quarter, which Retford would win 17-15 and go into halftime just 2 points down.

Julian Leung took advantage of his defensive mismatch in the third, finding opportunity to beat his defender off the dribble. His aggressive play would see him tally 8 points for the quarter. A late run from SeaHawks saw their lead stretch to 9, before Alex Espin hit a basket in the dying seconds of the quarter. SeaHawks led 57-50 entering the fourth.

Not for the first time this season, Retford were playing short-handed, with only 6 players. Unfortunately, in the fourth quarter this started to show. SeaHawks changed their defensive approach and in doing so were successful in slowing down Tyler Lister, who would finish the game with 37 points. Despite Julian and Alex both being able to knock down shots in the fourth, the lack of offensive options showed. Retford had their lowest scoring quarter, with 13 and would go on to lose a tough game 63-74.
