Still a few tickets left to the show and conversation Thursday at Scottish Storytelling Centre, so Neil and Svend are making the final preparations for meeting the audience. It is a work in progress, so there will be room for a wee chat after the performance.
The story of Gullruns saga is about a strong independent young woman from during the time of the and the show is all about the power of poetry, songs and music.
Matthew Roby's Old Norse Blog has helped us bringing Egils saga to life and Hafdis Huld gave us a wonderful introduction to Icelandic Music. Finally Alice Fernbank Storyteller has done some excellent work with some of the final poems.
8th November 5pm we will be in Steinkjer, Norway.

I have been inspired by the poem Lausavisur by Egil Skallagrimsson for years. Neil Sutcliffe and I did Walk the Oars inspired by the lyrics from around 900AD, and this year we will do Gullruns Saga - She Built a Boat to be performed as a Work in Process at The International Storytelling Festival 30th October and Hilmarfestival in Steinkjer Norway, 8th November.

Here is the poem in Old Norse
from https://heimskringla.no/
Þat mælti mín móðir,
at mér skyldi kaupa
fley ok fagrar árar,
fara á braut með víkingum,
standa upp í stafni,
stýra dýrum knerri,
halda svá til hafnar
hǫggva mann ok annan.
Danish translation of the first two lines
Old Norse
Þat mælti mín móðir,
at mér skyldi kaupa
Danish
Så min moder mente,
at mig man skulle købe et skib
English translation of these Danish words
So my mother meant
That for me they should buy me a ship
That is not
My mother told me
Some day I would buy a ship
As most translators these days translate the Old Norse words (Google translate does it!)
It totally takes away the power of the beginning.
The mother is telling someone, maybe even commanding someone to build a boat for this son, that when he was twelve years old killed a boy same age because her son was angry about a game with a ball.

For some reason people translate "at mér skyldi kaupa" to "I would buy" but it's "for me should they buy".
It's kinda important. The point of the poem is a defence for a senseless honor killing that his kin and everyone else resent him for but mommy comes to the rescue.
Rather then comforting him(someday you will buy a ship), mum thinks he should be indulged and rewarded for the homocide.(we (the family)should buy a ship for him.
An example of the Google Translation

In Alice Fernbank Storyteller magical performance and the art of seeing shown at the Edfringe, Vanir gods plays an important role. Odin, the alfather of the warrior tribe Asir gods, gives his eye for wisdom and uses this wisdom to practice male dominance and linear power. On the other site stands the Vanir gods Gulveig and Freya with their deeply rooted holistic knowledge .When finally Gullveig is killed for the third time, there is no other option for the Vanirs to go to war. Even after the war it is like Odin will never learn. He is a male asir god and therefore his knowledge gained by sacrificing one eye, is one dimensional. Alice asks this very important question, are there other ways of seeing?

On https://duets.live artists exchange stories, songs, poems and music.
This is from Svend-Erik Engh's letter to the artist when they ask: What shall I do? "Prepare something! A song, a dance, a drawing, a smile. Show it to me. Then inspired by that I tell you a story, sing a song, dance a dance. And then I have prepared something for you. I sing my song, read my poem, or whatever I have chosen in forehand. Inspired by that (I hope you will be inspired!) you tell a story, sing a song, dance a dance, tell a joke or whatever. That is a duet."
Check out Svend's wonderful project during the lockdown: DuEts. A series of meeting between two storytellers/artists where they share a bit of work then respond to one another!
So many wonderful storytellers and artists on here!!!
