Late Summer Heat Plant Careπ±π³π
How to keep your plants healthy and hydrated during the hottest months of the year.
As the late summer heat arrives, it's important to take extra care of your plants to
ensure they stay healthy and vibrant. Here are some tips from our experts at
Edinburgh Tree Surgeons on how to care for your plants during the hottest months of the year:
1. Water, water, water: As the mercury rises, so does your plant's need for water.
Make sure to water them frequently and deeply, preferably in the morning or evening when it's cooler. Be careful not to overwater, as this can lead to root rot.
2. Keep them shaded: If possible, move your potted plants to a shady spot or add
some shade cloth to protect them from the sun's harsh rays.
3. Mulch it up: Adding a layer of mulch to your garden beds can help retain moisture
and regulate soil temperature. Plus, it can help prevent w**d growth!
4. Feed them: Summer is the time when your plants are in full bloom and need all
the nutrients they can get. Consider fertilising them regularly to ensure they have
everything they need to thrive.
5. Keep an eye out for pests: Unfortunately, bugs love the hot weather too. Regularly
check your plants for pests and take action immediately if you notice any damage.
If you need help keeping your plants healthy and hydrated this summer, contact

Monday Madness!
The guys are starting an enormous removal today - can you spot them? ππ³
π’VOLUME UPπ’
Lots of bees buzzing around the laburnum outside our office today ππ³
Few trees are more beautiful when in floral bloom than the laburnum with its glorious display of bright yellow pendulous clusters. How tragic then that it is often subject to complete root plate failure and early death. We are frequently contacted to perform emergency removals on this species.
Laburnum wood is great for furniture / decorative wood works due to its two tone wood, dark in the middle with lighter shades at the outside but sadly large pieces are seldom harvested due to the extent of the rot in the main stem. The trees fall over due to extensive root rot.
So what causes this root rot, and when the trunk is examined, there is also usually extensive heartwood rot? Well as it turns out there are two reasons for this. Like in human medicine infection can lower immunity and a secondary infection can finish the patient off. In the Laburnum case, research has demonstrated necrosis by the bacteria Diaporthe Eres can cause lesions on the bark (bark blistering and orange discolouration) and these lesions are then colonised by the fungus Schizophyllum commune, thus starting the decline of the tree.
What can be done to prevent this horror? In short: donβt damage the tree by bad pruning practices. Leaving large pruning wounds can allow the bacteria in. Usually when examining a dead Laburnum we find a large hole / wound on the main stem where either a branch has torn out, or more typically some ghastly tree pruning has occurred.
Donβt allow unqualified tradesmen near your valuable trees and shrubs.
Get in touch with us to come and prune them properly.

How Much Is My Tree Worth? π³
Itβs easy to know how much a small tree in a garden is worth. You just compare with an online nursery catalogue. But what about bigger trees? How do we value a huge veteran Oak tree e.g. the Robin Hood Sherwood Forest Oak or the Sycamore Gap?
A common way is the Helliwell system. The tree or group of trees is scored factoring in things like how many people can see the tree, its location e.g. town centre / middle of nowhere, its age, life expectancy, condition and so on. A formula is then applied to the scores for each category and a monetary value is ascribed to the tree or trees. An iconic ancient tree in a city centre can be worth millions. This valuation can be useful for lots of reasons but notably in restraining over eager developers who frequently remove βtroublesomeβ trees without just cause. Knowing what trees are worth is fundamental when defending trees from the unscrupulous.
The valuation of a collection could form part of an exhaustive tree survey. People who own trees have them professionally surveyed as collections can be worth huge sums. And itβs easy for estates managers, residents committees, developers or even private citizens to miss details and incur avoidable losses. If your trees are worth millions then you want to know about any pests and diseases that are around so you can take remedial action. On a smaller scale you might want to know how badly affected your tree has been affected from an annoyed neighbour hacking off branches indiscriminately. You can monetise that with the right guidance and this can be part of effective dispute resolution.
Having trees looked at by a knowledgeable tree inspector that can produce a comprehensive report with each tree geo located, observations made and time related recommendations stated gives an impartial assessment and allows sensible, traceable, insurable pathways to be developed.
We have recently completed a comprehensive survey for the recently built Queen Margaret University on the East side of Edinburgh. The grounds cover several acres and include millions of pounds worth of trees both newly planted and mature / legacy. Itβs nice to contribute to looking after them.
Trees are very much valued by wildlife but often not by people. Start thinking about how much your trees are worth.

Looking towards autumn... ππ
As the summer months come to an end, it's time to start thinking about preparing your garden for the cooler months. With the right preparations, your garden can thrive even during autumn and winter.
Here are some tips for autumn garden prep:
1. Clean up fallen leaves and debris: Rake up fallen leaves, clear debris, and remove dead plant material. This will help prevent the growth of certain types of harmful spores (e.g. ash die back) and other pests.
2. Mulch: Add a layer of mulch to protect the soil from the cooler temperatures and help retain moisture. You can even use your leaf litter to make your own mulch!
3. Plant autumn vegetables: Many vegetables thrive in cooler temperatures, including broccoli, Brussels sprouts, beets and carrots. You can see some of our own in the pics attachedπ Even a small can be productive and bountiful!
4. Prune trees and shrubs: Pruning in the autumn can encourage healthy growth in the spring.
5. Test and amend the soil: Testing the soil and adding amendments can help ensure your plants have the nutrients they need to thrive.
At Edinburgh Tree Surgeons, we offer a range of services to help you prepare your garden for the cooler months. From pruning trees and shrubs to garden re-boots to testing and amending soil, we have the expertise to ensure your garden thrives year-round.
Tree removal in the sun today! Full team including Lil' Winston πΆ (Can you spot him?)
Get your pruning tools ready! Summer is the perfect time to give your trees and plants the care they need. By pruning during this time, you can promote healthy growth, increase fruit production, and control the size and shape of your trees. Not to mention, it can help prevent disease and pest infestations and eliminate potential hazards caused by weak or damaged branches. Don't forget to properly sanitize your tools and follow safe pruning practices to ensure the best results.
Pruning in summer can result in better ornamental displays. You'll also encourage bigger crops from fruit trees and bushes, by allowing more light to reach the fruit and concentrating the trees efforts. Removing new summer growth before it turns woody reduces growth-promoting nitrogen, allowing potassium to build up - and more potassium means more flowers and fruit. You'll also keep plants, such as shrubs, climbers and rambling roses, within bounds and maintain an attractive shape. Winter flowering shrubs, such as daphne and forsythia, can be pruned after they have flowered.
If you're not comfortable pruning your trees and plants on your own, Edinburgh Tree Surgeons is here to help. Our team of professional arborists can provide expert pruning services to help keep your trees and plants healthy and beautiful all year long. Contact us today to schedule a consultation.
