How Much Is My Tree Worth? 🌳

It’s easy to know how much a small tree in a garden is worth. You just compare with an online nursery catalogue. But what about bigger trees? How do we value a huge veteran Oak tree e.g. the Robin Hood Sherwood Forest Oak or the Sycamore Gap?

A common way is the Helliwell system. The tree or group of trees is scored factoring in things like how many people can see the tree, its location e.g. town centre / middle of nowhere, its age, life expectancy, condition and so on. A formula is then applied to the scores for each category and a monetary value is ascribed to the tree or trees. An iconic ancient tree in a city centre can be worth millions. This valuation can be useful for lots of reasons but notably in restraining over eager developers who frequently remove ‘troublesome’ trees without just cause. Knowing what trees are worth is fundamental when defending trees from the unscrupulous.
