Origin Stories: An Anthology of Beginnings
Call for Submissions

Origin Stories is a new anthology from Forest Publications examining creations and beginnings.
We're looking for new writing on these themes, perhaps involving a personal genesis story, the beginning of a universe, or the start of a business, job, or relationship.
We’re interested in any moment that changed the course of things.

Forest Publications is excited to see how writers will approach and interpret this topic.
We are accepting prose and poetry submissions.

Contributors for this collection do not need to reside in the UK.
The anthology will be distributed throughout the UK and promoted & marketed through Forest’s wide networks. Upon publication, Forest will organize online and/or in person launches in Edinburgh and beyond.

Forest is a recognised arts charity. All profits will go to supporting artistic projects. Forest is eager to support emerging artists, group shows, experimental work, multi-media and performance art as well as fine art. As such, contributors will not be paid. They will receive a copy of the book.

Thank you for your interest in this project! We look forward to reading your work.

Olivia Thomakos & Vidisha Ghosh (co-editors)

– SUBMISSION GUIDELINES –

Poetry submissions can consist of up to 3 poems, totalling no more than 5 pages.
In the case of multiple poems, please send them within a single text document starting a new page for each poem.

Prose submissions can run to 1,500 words, but no more. Please only send one prose submission.

Work should be submitted as a .docx file accompanied by a PDF for more experimental layouts.

Sticking to Standard Manuscript Format isn’t essential, but please format your work in 12 point Times New Roman font unless using a different size or font style is integral to the piece(s) submitted.

Submit your work using the file name format of: firstname_surname_[nature of the work].
For example, olivia_thomakos_poetry.
Writers may submit both prose and poetry if they wish.

All work must be previously unpublished both in print and online. Work may be published later in collections or in publications that accept previously published work as long as Forest receives acknowledgement for the original publication. We will respond to you within 3 months of the deadline.

Send your submissions to [email protected] with the subject “Origin Stories Submission,” by 11:59 pm on 31st January 2022. In the email, please let us know what kind of work you are submitting and include an artist bio not exceeding 150 words.

Please share with your contacts. Thank you!

Hello all,

It’s been 2 years since we closed the doors of our cafe in Sept 2020. Since then, we’ve been working on a number of art projects including zines, compilation albums, and artist studio residencies. The Forest is still here - but now we are looking for community members (new and old) to bring their ideas, energy and expertise to help create the next iteration of the Forest.

We would really love to hear from you if:
- You would like to get involved
- You have any interesting ideas what the Forest could do next
- You are part of any Edinburgh community / arts projects the Forest could collaborate with

Please write to: [email protected] with your ideas - also please share this message with anyone you think might be interested. We look forward to hearing from you and seeing what happens next!

Best wishes,
The Forest

The Golden Hour: White 27/09/2016

Did the The Golden Hour presents change much since you last saw us?

The Golden Hour: White

The Golden Hour presents ... WHITE 21/09/2016

Many of you will know that starting back in 2006, we ran a 'literary cabaret' out of The Forest Arts Collective with a bunch of friends. We called it 'The Golden Hour'.

It was a live event and we enjoyed making it happen every month until we didn't enjoy making it happen any more. Then, a little while after that, we hung up our hats. If you weren't there, well, you missed it and that's that. Let's not dwell on the past.

We never thought we'd 'bring back' The Golden Hour & we never wanted to. We thought what was done was done. We'd made an event we loved and we rode it till the wheels fell off.

But then, a few months ago, we started to wonder what our 'literary cabaret' might be able to mature into. We didn't want to bring people together just to do something we remembered fondly. So, we're finding a way to make things new.

We had a vision of white. We saw a big hall full of white sculpture. People wearing white boiler suits.

And so it will be: 24 September, 2016. Leith Theatre. 7pm.

We'd very much like you to join us. If you enjoyed what we did in the past, we're pretty sure you're going to like what we're up to.

Yes, there will be music, poems, films, drinks, snacks and surprises. Yes, the show starts at 8. Yes, you should bring your friends. Dress comfortable. Wear sensible shoes.

You can get tickets here.

Not the Booker 2012: vote for the winner 08/10/2012

Our excellent book writing pal, cultural hero, and good friend of The Golden Hour has a book nominated for a Not the Booker! Pretty great news for him and his supurlative work. Forest Publishing is, of course, grateful to the support he's offered us over the years so supporting his would be appreciated and not a bad victory for the family -- If you have read his book (and you should) follow these simple (though severely convoluted steps) and Vote For His Book. I did it, so can you! Good luck, Ewan and thanks for doing silly things with us. x

HOW TO VOTE FOR EWAN MORRISON's TALES FROM THE MALL FOR WINNER OF THE GUARDIAN’S NOT THE BOOKER PRIZE

Deadline October 14th
IN 7 EASY STEPS (it might seem complicated but only takes 10 minutes!!!):

1. Go to the Guardian not the booker voting page - the active link is at bottom of page ( or if hard to find so use this link):
http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2012/oct/05/not-booker-2012-vote-winner

2. Then click on the following second link within the page from author shortlist:
Tales from Mall: by Ewan Morrison:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/data/book/fiction/9781908885012/tales-from-the-mall

3. If you have written a review previously (thank you very much), find your previous review and click “Share” in the top right corner of your review box. Now go to Step 4.
If you have not written a review previously, here’s your chance! 100 words minimum is really a tiny paragraph, easy, saying what you thought of the book. Then click “Share” in the top right corner of your review box.
If you are not even a Guardian registered user, then you can log in using your Facebook or Twitter and post your review – easy!

4. After you hit ‘share’, a link box will come up – ‘copy’ the URL - link

5. Then return to the original Guardian page (as per Step 1):
http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2012/oct/05/not-booker-2012-vote-winner

6. Scroll down to the bottom of the comments and write: “I vote for Ewan Morrison’s Tales From the Mall. Here is my review.”

7. Then paste the link to your review (that you copied in step 4).
You can either highlight “Here is my review” and click the picture of the chain above the box to create your link that way (ie, embedded within text) or just paste it below the words “Here is my review:”.

NOTE: Apparently some servers don’t support the active links on the Guardian page, which previously caused untold trouble for some people. Safari does work. If you are having trouble with your links, then just go to the Guardian page link (see Step 1 above), scroll down to the comments section and write: “I vote for Ewan Morrison’s Tales from the Mall. Here is my review” and then copy and paste the entire content of your review straight into the comments section.
Thank you very much.

Not the Booker 2012: vote for the winner So here we are then: a clutch of Christian converts, two abandoned brothers and a faux-70s glam rock band. But there's got to be a winner. Who will be in a whole new world of tea-sipping come 15 October, asks Sam Jordison
