🎄 A giant Edinburgh sign has appeared on the Mound
Just a few steps away from Edinburgh's Christmas
On our doorstep
More than 92,000 flock to Edinburgh's Christmas festival ahead of ice rink unveiling More than 92,000 people have flocked to the opening week of Edinburgh’s Christmas festival.
Just up the road from us. The cannonball is still there, however it arrived.
Cannonball House
This is a super detail from a George Washington Wilson glass slide showing the gable of Cannonball House on Castlehill. The name 'Cannonball House' is derived from the cannonball that is stuck into the wall (between the bottom ledge of the upper large window and the top edge of the lower large window). It is very clear here and looks only recently cemented.
The likeliest story as to why the cannonball is there is to mark the exact height above sea-level of the Comiston reservoir which provided Edinburgh with piped supply of fresh water.
It is nothing to do with a drunken One o'clock gunner or Bonnie Prince Charlie's stay down at Holyrood in 1745 or Mary Queen of Scots exuberance throwing a skittle ball.
Thanks to George Ferguson for this detail.

The Lone Piper
This is a shot I have been planning for a long time. There were so many elements required to achieve this, almost all of which were out of my control. In fact, there was a period, after a few months, where I wasn’t sure if it was going to happen at all. Following a few failed attempts I finally got the conditions I was looking for, along with a piper up for the challenge at very short notice.
