A quick reminder to join us at our International Piano Summer School Recital on Friday, 9th August at 1pm at St Mary's Cathedral, Edinburgh, Edinburgh. This is a free concert and should last about an hour.

A great day so far with a quick game of table tennis and pool after breakfast, followed by yoga and lessons in improvisation, chamber music and practice surgery with our amazing teachers Anna Michels, Richard Montgomery and Helena Buckmayer.

Former pupil Anias Kroeger will be performing alongside Shutian Cheng at Marchmont St Giles this afternoon at 2.30pm.

To celebrate this special day, we had a thrilling staff vs. pupils volleyball match, which was closely fought and ended with a tie just as the bell rang! Well played everyone!🏐🤝

The St Mary's Music School annual Sport Day took place yesterday and what a competitive day it was! School houses Rosebury, Grosvenor, Lansdowne and Palmerston competed for the last few house points before the end of the school year.

The weather played along as our pupils battelled it out on the rounders field, with Grosvenor taking top spot!

What a busy week it's been for our pupils! 🎵🎹🤩

Starting off with the Directors' Recital Prize (DRP) on Tuesday, Wednesday saw four pupils compete in the annual Sheila Tough competition, adjudicated by mezzo-soprano Judy Brown. Tuesday evening the Leaver's Concert took place at the Edinburgh Society of Musicians where our final year pupils prepared and performed a varied programme.

Thursday saw the finals of the Junior and Intermediate Recital Prizes adjudicated by the wonderful and celebrated pianist Susan Tomes.

Today we have an all day piano masterclass in the School chapel with Ronan O'Hora and ongoing rehearsals for our Summer Concert on 20 (Edinburgh) and 24 June (Glasgow).

🥳🥳A huge congratulations to all our finalists who took part:

👉Congratulations to Eva (S6) for taking the top spot in the Sheila Tough Competition.

👉Well done to Sandy (Viola) for winning the Junior Recital Prize with his renditions of Prelude from Bach's Suite No. 2, Meditation by Bloch and Allegro Appasionato by Bridge.

👉Congratulations to Connie (piano) for being awarded the Intermediate Recital Prize with Etude Tableaux Op. 39 No. 8 by Rachmaninov, Musica Ricercata No. 3 & No. 5 by Ligeti.

𝐀𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐫 𝐄𝐝𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬, a former St. Mary's Music School pupil (1984-89), has been appointed headmaster at the Arts School in Český Dub, in the north of the Czech Republic, where he has been a violin and piano teacher for over 20 years.

Originally from Unst, Shetland, Alastair was first taught the violin by Trevor Hunter, before studying with Nigel Murray (violin), Audrey Innes (piano) and Lyell Cresswell (composition) at St. Mary’s. He went on to study composition at Manchester and Edinburgh universities and moved to the Czech Republic in 1996.

He is married to Barbora and they have four children. Alastair’s parents, Harold and Jean Edwards, still live in Shetland.

In his new role, he will oversee 200 pupils from the age of 6 to 18 studying strings, piano and woodwind, in addition to an active arts department.

A huge congratulations to George (S5), who won our Director's Recital Prize last night with stunning performances of works by Maxwell Davies, Bowen, and Bozza on the French horn. We also want to extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the finalists for their incredible performances. As Alistair Mackie, Chair of the Adjudicators, remarked, "The virtuosity on display this evening was truly something to behold."

Thank you to last years Junior, Intermediate, and Directors' Recital Prize winners, Shionka, Michelle and India for their fantastic performances while the judges deliberated, and to Miss Anna Michels and Mr John Cameron for accompanying.
