Besieged: the Siege of Dirleton Castle

Re-enactments serve two purposes: to highlight our history by focusing on reliving certain events and times, and to afford interested people the opportunity to actually experience life as it would have been in those days.

Events such as Besieged are able to take place mainly because ordinary folk are willing to give up their time (and often, money) to re-enact the historical scenes portrayed.

We thank them for helping us: some are even coming from Hartlepool... a fair distance.

The groups in attendance will be:

Outlaws and Vagabonds (Hartlepool/East Lothian)
Historia Normannis (Central Scotland)
The Knights of Monymusk (Dundee/Arbroath)

Besieged: the Siege of Dirleton Castle

Just to let folk know that there will be a mediaeval event at Yellowcraig, Dirleton, EH39 5DS, on 7th and 8th September between 10am and 4pm each day.

We will be re-enacting the siege of Dirleton Castle in 1298, when Bishop Antony Bek of Durham besieged this castle, along with Yester and North Berwick Castles. It is rumoured that King Edward I himself will make an appearance....

80 or more re-enactors, musicians and singers will portay events as they may have taken place just after the defeat of William Wallace at Falkirk. There will be opportunities for youngsters to train as squires and maidens are invited to compete for the title of best dressed mediaeval lady; and there will be prizes for the lasses with the best flower garland crowns.

For older folk, there will be Have a Go archery, tarot readings, colourful pageantry, music and dance...and, of course....brutal combat!

A positive step forward....

Medieval re-enactment of castle siege will close beach car park A FAMOUS siege of a medieval castle in East Lothian is set be re-enacted from a nearby beach car park later this year.

BESIEGED: The event is shaping up well: 6 re-enactment groups at least and 60 plus participants...with representation from the north -east of England well to the fore, as was the case in 1298.
