Scotland's Boarding Schools
Scotland's Boarding Schools offer something unique, a breadth and depth of education that is as rich as the landscape and culture it's set in.
Student mental health and wellbeing are the number one priorities for Scotland's independent schools.
Year-round, but especially as exam results season approaches, it's vital that pupils are equipped with the tools and support to ensure they succeed and flourish at school and at home.
In this blog, Merchiston Castle School, Edinburgh Deputy Head of Wellbeing, Danny Rowlands, explains what they do to cultivate a positive working environment at school and the importance they place on student wellbeing.

Huge congratulations to Kitty (U6) who took first place in The Caledonian Club's Scottish Schools Art Exhibition with her piece ‘Daisy’.
The standard of work submitted was exceptionally high and Philip Smith, adjudicator of the competition and Associate Director at Lyon & Turnbull commented, 'This painting is a compelling antidote to the vacuous selfies evident in contemporary society, with the artist managing to capture the essence of the sitter in paint, transporting the viewing into their world which holds the viewer’s gaze.’
It's a remarkable piece—congratulations Kitty 🎨
With the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference on the horizon, thoughts are rightly turning to topics around sustainability and climate change across all sectors, with education being no different.
Scotland’s independent schools take sustainability very seriously, with many having well established initiatives in place and environmental issues already featuring prominently across their curriculum.
One such school is Dollar Academy which introduced a ground-breaking online learning platform earlier this year, which has a focus on sustainability: FIDA
We sat down with Ian Munro, Rector at Dollar Academy, to find out more about FIDA and what it’s doing in the run up to COP26 in November...

A City School in the Countryside
Merchiston’s location truly is special. Neither cramped within the city nor stranded ‘out in the sticks’, we really can offer the best of both worlds. Our suburban location affords us the space and luxury of a fully self-contained campus, with all playing fields and facilities on a single site, yet the city centre is right on our doorstep. And it is not just any city centre- this is the capital city of Scotland, and the opportunities which it affords are invaluable; world-class venues and cosmopolitan culture.
Look to the west, however, and the city on whose edge we lie barely falls within view, the vista instead comprising the thrilling sight of the Pentland Hills. Hillwalking and running can be accessed directly from the school gates and other adventure sports are also within easy reach. And if all else fails, we have our school grounds with our orienteering course and ample space for on-site camping, something which the boys thoroughly enjoyed through the global pandemic.
Merchiston where city and adventure meet.

Sport plays a significant role in the lives of very many of our pupils at Loretto and we provide a broad range of opportunities for children of all abilities. Lorettonians are regularly selected for regional and national teams in many sports and although we are a small school we have a tradition of ‘punching above our weight’ and competing successfully against much larger schools.
One of the reasons for this success is the talented team of specialist coaches who develop the skills of all children whether novice or elite player. In order to deliver our high quality programme, we have excellent sports facilities including extensive outdoor pitches, AstroTurf® surfaces, a recently refurbished sports hall and gym, and fives, squash and tennis courts.
Lorettonians have an enviable reputation for sportsmanship. Teams aim to win, but we don’t believe that winning at all costs instils the right values. Fair play, respect for the opposition and officials, and commitment to team mates and training are all hallmarks of our philosophy.

Every member of the Albyn Community means something special to the school. Albyn goes from strength to strength with the support of pupils, staff, parents, alumni and friends of the school who collectively band together to create a happy, vibrant and friendly atmosphere for all.
Formally an all-girls school for over 130 years, Albyn became co-educational in 2005 creating a new generation within the school’s rich history. Adding to the existing wealth of knowledge and memories of our female former pupils, this major change was welcomed and the Albyn Community grew and became stronger.

Leonie talks about her experiences of joining the boarding community at St George’s School in Edinburgh. Edinburgh is consistently considered one of the most desirable places to live in the world.
The school is based in a tranquil parkland setting, with views to Edinburgh Castle, in the heart of the city. Edinburgh boasts a stunning landscape, a rich cultural heritage and is a modern vibrant city. As a boarder living in the heart of Edinburgh a girl at St George’s can take advantage of all the culture, sport and activity the city has to offer.
Our boarding numbers are around 50 girls and include UK and international pupils ranging in age from 10 to 18. They all live in Houldsworth house, which is situated at the edge of the school's private grounds, only 20 minutes walk from the centre of Edinburgh.

Friendships and fun are two of the most important aspects of a fulfilling school experience and in this short video Sixth Form pupils reflect on their favourite memories of their time at Glenalmond College. As well as the subjects, sport, art, music and drama they enjoyed, they also value the size of their school, at around 360 pupils, which means that everyone knows everyone.

Lathallan School sits at the heart of Brotherton Castle's stunning 60 acre grounds, on the edge of Scotland's North East coastline.
Pupils live and learn in a 19th century castle, enjoying unspoiled views across the North Sea. It's small wonder that this North East jewel in the crown is known as a 'School Castle by the Sea.'
Within the sprawling grounds there lies a treehouse classroom, two zip wires, the gardens of Narnia - where pupils enjoy homemade campfires or performances on the new outdoor stage - and four friendly alpacas.
Lathallan, easily commutable to both Dundee and Aberdeen, has a roll of around 200 pupils - with 38 spaces for full or weekly boarding.
Every pupil who lives at Brotherton Castle becomes part of the extended Lathallan family in a safe, spacious environment that they proudly call 'home.'
