Next level!

We’ve worked a lot in Steven’s floor to sitting transfer with the aim being that he would then be able to go from floor to wheelchair. Last week we gave it a go….

Ps the usual message from Steven at the end 😂

Kyle bossing the Lat Pull Down with the help of Active Hands and finding it hilarious when I just about go on my ar*e…it seems a lot of my clients enjoy when I hurt, or just about hurt, myself 👀.

Thanks to our pal Mick at Mobile Sign Services for the amazing job he has done on the truck. Mick has done all our signs for the gyms and vans and I wouldn’t go anywhere else. Gem of a guy 😁. Love it!

It was a pleasure going out to Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Scotland. Thanks for your kind words and we look forward to doing more in the future 😁

The Boss!

When Mairi first come to the gym over 5 years ago we worked a lot on her strength and mobility to help with transfers, especially into her electric wheelchair, so that she could access the community when she wanted.…these are the same things we work on today as maintaining that for as long as we can is the goal!

The boss with a 25kg leg press. The wheelchair accessible leg press is a great bit of kit up at our Dalkeith gym 👏🏻

Progress!!

One year between the two videos 💪

Floor to seated transfer looking amazing. Wouldn’t be a Steven video without the customary one finger salute at the end 😂

Disability golf sessions!

Alongside Scottish golf we will be assisting in delivering a couple of golf taster sessions for disabled people and people with long term health conditions. The first one is this Sunday at Melville golf centre and the second one will be the 8th May at the McDonald Cardrona in Peebles.

More information can be found below!

I would note that there is not a paragolfer (a wheelchair/standing frame that supports you to stand in a golf position) at the Melville event but there will be at the Cardrona event. However everyone is welcome to attend either event.

If you are interested in coming along to try golf then you can complete the below form or you can let us know and we can add you to the event.

On Tuesday we were asked to present at the Scottish Head Injury Forum at Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh. It was a bit nerve-wracking but we done it and it was well worth it for all the amazing people we got to meet! As much as we don’t enjoy public speaking we do love speaking about what we do and the community we have built.

We are excited to see what comes from the event and we mustn’t have done to bad as we have also been asked to speak at another event in May!

Still making progress!

Since first trying the walking bars about four months ago and exclaiming “I’ve not stepped like that since 2016!” they have become a regular feature of Mairi’s leg workouts.

Although walking independently will never be practical again for Mairi there is still a lot to gain as a wheelchair user to working these muscles. Strengthening the boss’ legs has really helped with all of her transfers but also allowed her to pull herself up at home to stand and look out the window as she can’t see out in her chair

…..and let’s not forget for Mairi “it feels wonderful”.

…..and then there were 6!

DR Inclusive Fitness is delighted to announce that we have another female PT joining the team!

Claire has been a PT since 2021 but hasn’t found the right environment to showcase her skills….until now! Claire has a natural knack of adapting exercise for disabled people with having previously done so for disabled friends and family.

Claire has already started working with some of our clients at the gym both 1-2-1 and in our adapted fitness classes…..although I think it will take her a while to get used to how many wind up merchants there are in the gym!

Adding to the team is allowing us to grow the community that we have created and are really proud of. Claire currently has some availability to take on new clients so if you would like a free consultation to come in to meet us and have a chat send us a direct message or drop us an email.

It’s our birthday!

And just like that our first gym in loanhead is 2 years old!

In some ways it’s flew past but in other ways it seems like it’s always been!

I remember how nervous I was on that opening day and it’s wee milestones like this that help me reflect and feel gratitude for everything that we are ❤️.

23/12/2023

We are now officially closed for Christmas!

What an amazing year and we feel very grateful to all our clients, friends and everyone who likes and shares our posts.

We wish you all a Merry Christmas and we can’t wait to see you in the new year and see what 2024 has to bring ❤️

It’s christmaaaaasss!

George has been working with David since July 2022 with an aim to improve his transfers and to be able to change his position in bed without assistance.

George and David have been working a lot on George’s leg and core strength as well as focussing on his range of movement. As you can see from the video George has smashed his goals and is moving around the house more independently. Due to the work he has put in he is also now able to get his hand to his mouth to feed himself and more importantly grab a bottle and take a drink 😂.

George next challenge is to transfer into a car seat from his wheelchair….watch this space 😁.

Better late than never….

We were meant to post this a couple weeks ago 🙈.

We are delighted to announce that Penny is now over here full time 😁. As most of you will know Penny does the business side of things around here (she’s the one that’s always asking for your money). However, she is also a fully qualified Personal Trainer and will be splitting her time between managing the business (doing all things that I don’t like doing) as well as taking on some clients of her own. As the nature of what we do is hands on we are also delighted that we are able to offer clients a female PT as it is important to have a range of PTs with a different perspective (I also have a feeling that she will have some company soon 😉).

Penny comes over with a vast knowledge of working with disabled people in social care, especially in Midlothian, as well as having a background as a support worker. This along with always having a positive attitude and willing to go above and beyond makes her a great addition to our team and she already has a great rapport with our clients.

Tartan army!

Craig is a wheelchair user and has Cerebral Palsy, he comes to the gym on a Friday to see Ross.

Craig and Ross have been working hard on his leg strength, working on improving his lift and gate as Craig has a fear of falling on steps and relies on his dad to help him with them.

One of Craig’s favourite things to do is to go to the Scotland games and travel on the supporters bus. The bus has quite a big couple of steps to negotiate to get on and as Craig (and his dad 👀) is getting older he has started to find these harder. Craig would also love to get back to being able to get about using a walker so he can be a bit more independent around the house.

Yesterday Craig had another go at the walking bars with some obstacles in the way and absolutely smashed it.

“I love to come to the gym to use the equipment and for the chat (definitely not talking about Ross’s 😂). I like that I am focussed on what I am doing and if this gym wasn’t here it would be hard for me to go to the gym”

10/11/2023

Two years since I took the biggest and best gamble of my life (kasey aside 😂). I’m so grateful for what we have created and excited for what the future holds! ❤️

04/11/2023

Massive happy birthday to the DR inclusive OG Omar Haq!

Some highlights of our wee session yesterday. On the walking bars for the first time in years!

29/10/2023

Amazing progress on Steven’s floor to seated transfer.

A couple of the main exercises that have helped his progress with this have been his pull ups and the leg press using our new accessible leg press all the way from America 😁. (See comments)

“I feel wonderful”

The boss aka Mairi has been my client since 2019 and we have done a lot together to maintain her independence so that Mairi can continue to access the community.

Last week we decided to give the walking bars a bash and as usual she smashed it.

Me: How you feeling? (Expecting knackered etc)

Mairi: I feel absolutely wonderful, I’ve not stepped like that since 2016!

Let it shine!

At the end of September Jhon and myself walked the shine Edinburgh night walk in aid of cancer research. Jhon has osteogenesis Imperfecta and if you remember triple fractured his leg just last year.

Jhon has been my client (and close friend, I suppose 😂) for nearly four years and the past 16 months has been a long road and the toughest for Jhon both physically and mentally and I couldn’t be more prouder of how he has handled it and for it to culminate in walking 10,000 metres is an unbelievable achievement. Here are some highlights of our walk 😁.
