Latest book: The Open Road by David Campany.

The road trip is an enduring symbol in American culture. Ever since cars became widely available, the road stretching over the horizon has represented a sense of possibility and freedom, discovery and escape—a place to get lost and find yourself. The American road trip has appeared prominently in literature, music, and movies, but it has had an especially powerful influence on photogra-phy. As photographers have embarked on trips across the United States with the express purpose of making work, they have created some of the most important photographs in the history of the medium: from images by Walker Evans, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Berenice Abbott to Robert Frank's seminal 1950s odyssey, The Americans. From Stephen Shore to Ryan McGinley, hundreds of other photographers have continued the tradition.

The Open Road is the first book to explore the photographic road trip as a genre. It opens with a comprehensive introduction, which traces the rise of road culture in America and considers photographers on the move across the country and across the century, from the early 1900s to present day. Each chapter explores one body of work in depth through informative texts and a portfolio of images, beginning with Robert Frank, and including such renowned work as Garry Winogrand's 1964, Joel Sternfeld's American Prospects, William Eggleston's Los Alamos, and Alec Soth's Sleeping by the Mississippi. The Open Road is a visual tour de force, presenting the story of photographers for whom the American road is muse.

Paper book or kindle?
I personally prefer a paper book, maybe it’s my age!? However when I am reading a more academic book that is much harder to read and contain (many) words I don’t know, a kindle is a great bit of kit. You can touch the word and you instantly get a a dictionary and Wikipedia.

How do you guys like to read?

New Book: Joel Sternfield first pictures.

Joel Sternfield made the photographs for this book between 1970 and 1980.

Joel Sternfeld (born June 30, 1944) is an American fine-art photographer. He is best known for his large-format color pictures of contemporary American life and identity. His work contributed to the establishment of color photography as a respected artistic medium. Furthering the tradition of roadside photography started by Walker Evans in the 1930s, Sternfeld documents people and places with unexpected excitement, despair, tenderness, and hope. Ever since the 1987 publication of his landmark “American Prospects,” Sternfeld’s work has interwoven the conceptual and political, while being steeped in history, landscape theory and his passion for the passage of the seasons. Sternfeld’s is a beautiful and sad portrait of America - ironic, lyrical, unfinished, seeing without judging.

Love love love this place. Can’t recommend this venue enough for a wedding day. Gorgeous old building, stunning grounds and the staff are superb. Hope to one day soon be back here again. Makes what I do so enjoyable and I am spoilt for choice when it come to taking photos.

I can almost hear the c***k of glasses and cheers as ‘the pub in a bus’ sets out to turn the traditional English pub on its head. The starting of a dream that became reality.

The children are loud with excitement as the bus pulls over. This bus is special, it’s a kids play area on wheels, how original and exciting.

The chrome is polished and the seats are spotless, the bus is ready for open top tours. The driver tips his cap to the excited passengers as they embark on a journey.

A white VW bug zips along, full of dreams of adventure and good times with those closest.

A cruel twist of fate, already slipping into a distant dream, the once clear view through the windows has become an open wound.
Bricks pierce the invisible skin, sending a razor sharp cloud of shattered glass to fall upon a once happy time.
The barrier that once kept passengers safe and warm; is now a cold open wound, exposing the inner flesh to the harshness of a British winter. Removing what little dignity is left of these broken dreams.
When the glass breaks that last little glimmer of hope is gone.
A star in the sky crumbles, the bright light is gone.
Small cubed pieces of glass cover the seats and floor. A once bright future is now dead, all that remains is a decaying shadow. A shadow that had faded and has been almost forgotten.

Latest book: Brooklyn, the city within by Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb. The Webb are a married couple with a passion for photography.

Having collaborated on numerous photographic works over the years, notably the book projects Violet Isle and Slant Rhymes, Alex Webb and Rebecca Norris Webb have most recently turned their attention to Brooklyn, their home of over 20 years. Their distinct interests and working processes have resulted in, Brooklyn: The City Within, a book which Webb describes as "a musical piece in three movements, distinguished by different rhythms" - with his photographing the tamously diverse neighbourhoods and inhabitants of the borough, while Norris Webb dwelt upon the "green spaces at the heart of Brooklyn," pairing short texts with her images. The book's design echoes this dichotomy, resulting in a physical object which neatly emphasises the variety of the place.

Using art as inspiration.

One of my favourite artists who inspires my street photography Chin H Shin, so I decided to use my street photography from our trip to Glasgow to use his influence in my own work. I have mixed some of his more influential work in with my photos. What you guys think?
