June 6th 2024

Visit Ely, City Of Ely Council and the Ely branch of the Royal British Legion come together and commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Normandy Landings on 6 June 1944.

There will also be a series of major commemorations and events across the UK and in France.

Also known as D-Day, the historic operation saw the Allied Forces mount a large-scale invasion of Nazi-occupied France that ultimately tipped the course of the Second World War in the Allies’ favour.

Please join us at 10.45 am at Ely War Memorial, Ely Market Place, for a short service, followed by the laying of wreaths.

At 7.45 pm we will be gathering on St Mary's Green, where there will be a cadet parade, a short service followed by the lighting of our Ely Beacon to remember all those that sacrificed their lives.

It was great to hear about the issues affecting residents of Isleham at my open meeting recently.

Participants echoed some of the issues I have heard from other constituents across the constituency:

🦷 Access to NHS dentistry

I know that this remains a challenge, but the Government's new NHS Dental Recovery Plan will deliver 2.5 million NHS dental appointments over the next year, while Cambridgeshire NHS dentistry has just received an additional £6.1 million investment from the Government to extend services

📚 SEND provision

Support for those with SEND is an issue of great importance to many of my constituents and it is one close to my heart. £49 million of revenue funding and £11.3 million of capital funding has recently been invested into our area's SEND provision by the Government, which will help more children to receive the tailored work they need to thrive

🚌 Bus travel

I continue to press the Combined Authority Mayor, as the transport leader for our area, to announce his plans to spend the new £2.3 million for Cambridgeshire's bus network. I have also called on Stephensons of Essex to add Isleham to the No.112 bus route, which is under consideration

Our pubs are a central part of the community and vital to the local economy.

It’s no different in Soham with The Fountain Inn, which has just received a £222,000 investment to refurbish the site.

While customers get to enjoy the lovely new facilities, family games and the new ‘dog walker club’, the owners – Phil and Sylvia – will benefit from a further duty rate freeze on alcohol, as announced at the Budget earlier this month. This is on top of the 75% business rates discount announced in the autumn.

We are experiencing customers who when advised framing is ready are taking up to 3 weeks to collect...
Unfortunately this is not acceptable and storage charges will be imposed...
