TESTIMONIAL

“ Glen Daniels has been treating me for years now with my neck and shoulder pains and I would never go anywhere else.
I recently had a trapped nerve or shoulder injury in which the doctor only gave me painkillers, I was off work. I have had 4 treatments with Glen over 3 weeks and he has now fixed this.
He is the best at what he does and can’t recommend him enough.
Thank you Glen ”

Achilles Tendinitis is a condition characterised by inflammation of the Achilles tendon, which is the large tendon that connects the calf muscle (gastrocnemius and soleus) to the heel bone (calcaneus). The Achilles tendon is essential for activities like walking, running, and jumping, as it helps to raise the heel off the ground.

🔹Causes:

Achilles tendinitis often occurs due to repetitive stress or overuse of the tendon, which can be triggered by:

👉 Increase in sudden physical activity
👉 Improper footwear
👉 Tight calf muscles
👉 Running on hard or uneven surfaces
👉 Age related changes

🔹 Symptoms:

✨ Pain and stiffness: the most common symptom is pain and stiffness along the Achilles tendon, particularly in the morning or after periods of inactivity.
✨ Swelling: the tendon may be swollen, and there might be a noticeable thickening of the tendon.
✨ Tenderness: the area might be tender to the touch, especially when you press on the tendon.
✨ Limited range of motion: you may notice a reduced ability to flex the foot.
✨ Crepitus: a creaking or cracking sensation might be felt when moving the ankle.

🔹 Treatment

This typically involves a combination of rest, physical therapy, manuel therapy and pain management

✅ Rest and activity modification: reducing or modifying activities that cause pain.
✅ Ice therapy: applying ice to the affected area can reduce pain and inflammation.
✅ Physical therapy: exercises to strengthen the calf muscles and improve flexibility can be beneficial.
✅ Manual therapy: find a qualified practitioner to provide massage therapy to reduce muscle tension, and improve blood flow. Joint mobilisation to increase foot and ankle mobility. Taping to unload the tendon, reducing the stress on the area
✅ Medications: non steroidal anti-inflammatory’s can reduce pain and inflammation.
✅ Gradual return to activity: once symptoms improve, a gradual return to physical activity is recommended.

Osteopathy is a form of alternative medicine that focuses on diagnosing, treating, and preventing health issues by manipulating and massaging the musculoskeletal system, including bones, muscles, and joints.

Osteopaths aim to improve overall health by ensuring the body’s structure functions properly, often addressing issues like back pain, posture problems, and headaches.

Assessment of Posture and Alignment:

✅ Comprehensive Evaluation: Your Osteopath will begin by conducting a thorough assessment of your posture, looking for imbalances, misalignments, or areas that contribute to posture.
✅ Identification of Underlying Causes: Your Osteopath will identify the underlying causes of postural issues, such as muscle imbalances, joint restrictions, or even habits related to your daily activities.

Osteopathic Techniques to Improve Alignment:

✅ Soft Tissue Manipulation: Osteopaths use techniques like massage and stretching to release tight muscles and fascia, helping to reduce tension and restore balance.
✅ Joint Mobilisation and Manipulation: By gently mobilising or manipulating joints, your osteopath can improve joint function, increase range of motion, and correct misalignments that contribute to poor posture.
✅ Myofascial Release: This technique targets the fascia, the connective tissue surrounding muscles, to relieve tension and improve mobility, which can help in correcting posture.

Additionally:

✨ Your Osteopath may prescribe you specific exercises to strengthen weak muscles and stretch tight ones. This helps create a more balanced musculoskeletal system, promoting better posture.
✨ Strengthening the core muscles is often a key component in improving posture, as these muscles support the spine and pelvis.
✨ Your osteopath will provide guidance on how to maintain good posture during daily activities, such as sitting, standing and lifting.
✨ Your osteopath can offer advice on how to set up your workstation or adjust your sleeping position to support better posture and prevent further issues.

Holistic Approach to Health:

✨ Whole Body Focus: Osteopathy considers the whole body, not just one area of pain or concern. This holistic approach ensures that all contributing factors to poor posture are addressed, leading to more lasting improvements.

“ Dilar is a miracle worker! I had awful sciatica kick in on Monday evening and had an appointment (as a new patient) by 11am the next day. She was very thorough in assessing what was wrong, and what the safest and most comfortable treatment for my pain. I’ve been back again on Saturday for a follow up and left with a big smile on my face - walking is already so much easier.

Understanding Dry Needling.

Dry needling is a therapeutic technique used by physical therapists, osteopaths, chiropractors and other healthcare professionals to treat myofascial pain.
It involves the insertion of thin, solid filament needles into trigger points to alleviate pain and improve movement. The focus is on relieving musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction by targeting myofascial trigger points, which are hyperirritable spots in skeletal muscle. These trigger points can cause pain and discomfort, often referred to other parts of the body.

🍀 Technique: The practitioner inserts needles into specific points in the muscle or fascia, which may cause a local twitch response. This response is believed to help release tension and improve blood flow.

🍀 Purpose: Dry needling aims to reduce muscle pain and tension, improve range of motion, and promote healing. It’s used to treat conditions like back pain, neck pain, tendonitis, headaches, and other musculoskeletal issues.

🍀 Mechanism: It is thought that dry needling disrupts the pain cycle by breaking up adhesions, reducing inflammation, and stimulating healing response.

🍀 Difference from acupuncture: Though dry needling and acupuncture use similar needles, they are based on different principles. Dry needling is rooted in Western medicine and focuses on musculoskeletal issues, whereas acupuncture is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine and aims to balance the body’s energy.

🍀 Safety and training: Practitioners need specialised training to perform dry needling. It is generally considered safe, but potential side effects can happen and vary from person to person.

If you are considering dry needling, you can consult with your osteopath to determine if it is right for you.

TESTIMONIAL

“ I have been using GD Osteopathy for sometime but yesterday was my first visit to their new premises.
Easy to find being only a few doors down from the old premises the new location is a former GP surgery.
Refurbished to a high standard with a comfy waiting room and the big plus is that there are no stairs to negotiate with everything on the ground floor. The same top notch treatment from Richard Baker but in an improved location - what’s not to like? “

Osteopathy can be quite beneficial for managing pain, as it focuses on the musculoskeletal system and aims to improve overall health by ensuring that the body’s structure and function are in harmony. Osteopathic treatment often involves hands on techniques such as stretching, gentle pressure, and resistance, which can help alleviate pain, improve mobility, and promote healing.

Here are some ways osteopathy might help with pain:

✨ Improving Blood Flow: Osteopathic techniques can enhance circulation to affected areas, which may help reduce pain and inflammation.

✨ Reducing Muscle Tension: Gentle manipulation can help relax tight muscles and reduce strain on the body.

✨ Enhancing Joint Function: By improving the alignment and movement of joints, osteopathy can alleviate discomfort and enhance mobility.

✨ Supporting the Body’s Natural Healing Processes: Osteopathic practitioners often focus on the body’s inherent ability to heal itself, using techniques to facilitate this process.

If you’re considering Osteopathy, contact us to book in with one of our qualified osteopaths. Your practitioner will assess your specific situation and tailor the treatment to your individual needs.

Disc Injury?

Osteopathy is a form of manual therapy that focuses on the treatment and prevention of musculoskeletal disorders. When it comes to disc injuries, such as herniated or slipped discs, osteopathy offers an alternative approach to conventional treatments.

💡Understanding Disc Injuries

🔹Herniated Disc: When the soft inner gel of the disc leaks out through a tear in the outer layer.
🔹 Bulging Disc: When the disc protrudes out of its normal boundary without rupturing.
🔹 Degenerative Disc Disease: The breakdown of discs over time due to wear and tear.

💡 Diagnoses and Assessment

✅ A detailed medical history and physical examination.
✅ Assessing posture, mobility, and the alignment of the spine.

💡 Treatment Techniques

✅ Soft Tissue: Gentle massage and stretching to relieve muscle tension and improve circulation.
✅ Articulation: Gentle movements of the joints to increase range of motion and reduce stiffness.
✅ Spinal Manipulation: This involves quick, controlled movements to improve joint function and reduce pain, although this is used cautiously with disc injuries.

💡 Benefits of Osteopathy

✅ Non-Invasive: Osteopathic treatment is a hands on approach that avoids surgery and medications.
✅ Holistic Approach: Treats the whole body rather than just the symptoms, promoting overall health and well being.
✅ Personalised Care: Treatments are tailored to the individual’s specific condition and needs.
✅ Pain Relief and improved Function: Aims to relieve pain, restore function, and improve quality of life.

💡 Self-Care and Prevention

✅ Exercise and Rehabilitation: Osteopaths often recommend specific exercises to strengthen the muscles supporting the spine and prevent further injuries.
✅ Postural Advice: Guidance on maintaining good posture to reduce stress on the spine.
✅ Ergonomic Adjustments: Recommendations for adjusting your work environment to support your spinal health.

If you are dealing with a disc injury, consider consulting with one of our qualified osteopath’s to explore this therapeutic option and work towards a more comfortable life.

A guide to correct desk ergonomics:

✅ Ideally you want an adjustable chair and desk, with back support and a footrest

✅ Screen should be roughly an arms length away

✅ Eyes should be level with the top of your screen

✅ Sit deep in the chair, keeping your back upright and hips at 90 degrees

✅ Knee level should be slightly below your hip level

✅ Keep your shoulders relaxed with elbows at 90 degrees

✅ Keep your wrists straight rather than bent up or down

✅ Take regular activity breaks, especially when working long hours!

What is The Mummy MOT?

Up to half of all women experience weakness in both the abdominal muscles and pelvic floor muscles after pregnancy, they can aiso experience hip pain and up to a third still have a tummy gap at eight weeks post-birth. This can cause instability or poor core strength leading to women developing pelvic or back pain or bladder, bowel and sexual dysfunction. These conditions should not be something you should just put up with as a result of having a baby.

It’s recommended that women have an initial assessment at 6-8 weeks postnatal, but we also treat women who gave birth years ago that may still have a tummy gap or related pelvic floor issues.

What is Golfers / Tennis Elbow?

Golfers elbow (medial epicondylitis) and tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) are common injuries caused by repetitive stress and overuse. Both conditions involve damage to the tendons in the elbow, leading to pain, inflammation, and potential degeneration if left untreated.

Golfer’s Elbow:

✨Cause: Repetitive stress or overuse of forearm muscles that bend the fingers and wrist, not just from golf but also from activities like computer work, racket sports, and manual labor.

✨Symptoms: Pain on the inside of the elbow, worsened by gripping or bending the wrist.

✨Treatment: Rest, ice, manual therapy, strengthening exercises, and possibly medications or steroid injections. Early treatment can prevent further damage and speed up recovery.

Tennis Elbow:

✨Cause: Overuse of forearm muscles that extend the wrist and fingers, often from activities like racket sports, computer use, gardening, and playing musical instruments.

✨Symptoms: Pain on the outside of the elbow, difficulty gripping, and forearm stiffness.

✨Treatment: Rest, ice, manual therapy, activity modification, and strengthening exercises. Addressing poor posture and technique can also help prevent recurrence.

💡Prevention Tips:

✅ Avoid overuse of the elbow and forearm muscles.
✅ Stop activities that cause pain.
✅ Use appropriate equipment for sports and work.
✅ Seek expert advice for proper technique.
✅ Regularly stretch the muscles around the elbow to keep them flexible.

If you’re experiencing symptoms of golfer’s or tennis elbow, our osteopath’s can provide tailored treatment plans to help you recover and get back to your favorite activities.

I made an appointment with GD as I was struggling with my lower back and also Hamstring was suffering also. When not teaching I also play tennis.

In one session I was on the move again. It amazed me how the body actually works.

At the same time I was pleased I could move more freely and play tennis again.

I would highly recommend GD clinic and staff.”
