Dear All, Customers, Local Businesses, Competitors, Everyone,

AWARENESS POST/PLEASE SHARE/REPOST

This post is for all local businesses, near and far, please be careful, we had a mass 'dine and dash' by a group of travellers (also known as gypsies). Shocking to read the news yesterday about the 'dine and dash' family but even more shocking for it to happen on a large scale in real life. My name is Saiful Rahman (known as Sai), I am the manager at Tamarind Bay, Heavitree, Exeter, Devon, EX1 2RR. Police are aware and will be investigating within the next couple of days. Please share for awareness. No hard-working business should put up with daylight robbery and the absolute helplessness. The audacity and shocking nature of these travellers (gypsies). Please read below for more information, I am sorry, it is quite long.

Before anyone asks why we served them, unfortunately, we do not discriminate , and before anyone asks 'why didn't you ask for upfront payment?', they (the travellers) would from experience cause a fuss and say we are discriminating them by making them pay whilst other groups of people aren't asked to, you can't win. I have tried to be accurate as possibe, unfortunately as there were many of the travellers, we singled out the mains culprits.

The situation as follows- Around 7pm, 23/04/2024, 5 vehicles pull up outside Tamarind Bay, Heavitree, opposite Tesco, covering the white jagged lines and double yellow lines (from the traffic light) towards the parking bay near the launderette, a man in high-vis walks in and asks, “is there a possibility for 5 tables of 4?”. Looking around, I saw we had available tables with two tables in the process of leaving. I said “yes” believing we were about to get workmen (we often get a lot), however next thing people start coming in, all sorts, clearly families as they had a lot of children, They all sat down and started ordering, me and the waitress ran around rugged fulfilling their drinks order and food order. It became clear they were travellers (gypsies). We had our reservations but continued to serve them as we do not believe in discrimination. In the nicest possible way, I have had many customers doing a 'runner' aka 'dash and dine' (especially in London) and they have always been travellers; never had any other group run away without paying , I have been working, managing restaurants for nearly 17 year but this incident takes the biscuit.

Back to the story. Everything seemed to be going well, we had two more tables walk in (not related to the group of people) during serving them. The kitchen/front of house was stressed in serving them, and their many demands. After all the food came out, a table asked, the man specifically if we do cake, (a family of 4, one male adult, one female adult and two children, one male and one female), I responded “unfortunately not”, the male got up and said he was getting a birthday cake for the table next to them (two adult males-one young wearing all orange high-vis, jumper and pants and an older man). He left and after his children followed, with his partner. As the rest of the group were still in the restaurant, I believed they were genuine customers and would be returning to join their group. The waitress expressed her reservation, and said she believed they had left.

As we were still busy running around, clearing tables, another table got up, the table in the middle, near the door, see video (young adult male with his two boys and partner), and then that was when we clocked on. However, one table, a adult man and his partner who had a small baby girl asked for the bill and actually paid, they are in the Land Rover (Vehicle Registration: CT51 GRT). In the confusion everyone else got up and started leaving, disregarding the fact we clamoured for them to pay the bill. The other four bills, totalled up-to £270, These are challenging times for all hospitality businesses, from bars, pubs, clubs and restaurants.. We followed them, the young adult male got into a van, see picture, unfortunately it came out blurry. He did a u-turn and headed towards Exeter City. Vehicle Registration unclear. Update: Vehicle Reg NP05 NED.

Me, and the waitress followed the others outside, the couple with the baby got in the Land Rover, claiming they paid and had no part of this 'mass dash and dine'. Yes they paid, but they were with the group. The other family, we followed got in the car, the women waved some cash saying she was going to pay whilst her husband, clearly in the video, says “let him call the police, don't pay him, do not pay him get in the car, get in the car”. She complies and get in the car, their car a Ford Kuga (Vehicle Registration: AP09 CVY), front windscreen, passenger side smashed. And even when I stood in front of their car, he reversed and drove off. This was the man who originally came in and asked for the tables. We had three other tables, who seemed shocked to see the mass exodus. The waitress was shaken but she did well, couldn't believe what she saw. I couldn't believe the sheer audacity, never a mass walkout, it seemed very well constructed. I called the police on 999, who asked whether the people had left the building, I said “yes”, they advised me to call 101 as it's classed as a non-emergency, After a hour we managed to get through and explain the situation. The police took some information and advised they will be in touch. I asked can I post on Facebook to warn other restaurants he said it's allowed. However we can't put up a sign banning certain groups, understandably, we don't want to create or be part of any form of discrimination but the injustice, that the group can walk away and the police appear hand-tied, Shocking, in broad daylight (yes it was evening) and in front of their own children, who will see and most likely copy their parents behaviour, stealing, lying, total disregard to fellow humans, hard work. I do feel like criticizing the police for lack of response but this probably is another argument, given the state of the country, We can't take the law into our own hands, we cannot do anything. Thank you to all our customers who supported us and we had a colleague and his friend help clear the mess after. We look forward to seeing our loyal customers and urge everyone to be alert and careful,

Dear Customers,

Thank you for your continued support - we are officially 2 years old, we couldn't have done it without you. We'd also like to thank all our staff members; past and present, thank you and your efforts are appreciated.

In these hard times, we appreciate our customers are still able to come out and give their custom to us. We hope the rollout of LTNs doesn't deter customers: we understand traffic isn't the best around Heavitree at the moment. But please do come in and usually around 6pm traffic does tend to go down.

If possible please order via our website or call us. And additionally please do call us and book a table, we are serving alcohol and are open from 5pm everyday.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OUR DEAR CUSTOMERS AND STAFF

A big thank you to everyone who has supported this business during hard and uncertain times.

Please note we have removed a few items off the menu; unfortunately during busy times these items take time to prep and cook.

And please if possible order via our website (www.tamarindbayexeter.co.uk); this will help us massively during busy times as it can be hard to hear an order or an address. Especially New Year's Eve. Thank you.

And once again a sincere apology to customers that have received poor experiences-whilst we do our ultimate hardest sometimes we can get things wrong (we are only human). And luckily it's a small minority. Again sorry and we hope to do better in future as we streamline the business.
