Hi! This is my accountability page as Exeter Uni's NUS delegate for the NUS national conference 2020.
This is a late post. I met up with the DVP international and international student officer at the drop-in session they organised. This was a great opportunity to talk about my third manifesto, the rights of EU students. With the international student officer, we discussed the draft of an EU student survey consisting the following:
- EU student fees
- research grants
-healthcare still covered by national insurance system?
-post-study employment
-how EU student societies will be affected post-Brexit.
If you are keen to speak to the international student officer, email her at [email protected]
Post #5:
I released that getting a minimum of 20 students per sub-region to fill up the international survey is the most realistic strategy. This would also add new, representative and holistic data on improvement efforts for future international students. Today you can find me in these areas:
- Into building
- Arab and Islamic building

Today I released the international student survey (click here: https://forms.gle/BKZ2nsYkeCH4VqZB8) to the student guild, international student societies and on my social media to reach as many students as possible. This survey aims to understand the experiences and suggestion of international students in Exeter. These will help shape motions to be presented at the National NUS conference 2020 in Liverpool. There are also 3x £10 amazon vouchers to be won sponsored by Exeter's DVP International.
Exeter University International students survey Hello! Thank you for spending time to complete this survey. Tired of your concerns as international students being sidelined? Help me (your National NUS conference delegate), help you! Let me know what matters to you most so we can create effective change for future students. Your ideas and opinions...

Following the meeting with the student's guild president, I met up with Yudy Wu and we discussed my manifestos:
#1- Anti-discrimination campaigns - Exeter Speaks Out was developed mainly for university staff, therefore it could be improved in areas such as user interface (the website is hard to navigate), visibility (advertising the website to marginalised communities- they don't even have a social media page I can tag (?)) and framework (student-run organisations like Exeter Student Nightline has better student engagement). We will each search for an exemplary anti-discrimination channel used in other universities that could run in all uk universities.
#2- Supporting international students - Include St. Lukes in festivals. St. Lukes houses many international students but our campus is never included in the festivities celebrated by the university.
Thank you Yudy for your time and efforts!

Following the meeting with Billy, I emailed the Career Zone asking about the careers fair for international students, however they stopped replying.
I decided to team up with students striving for the same goals, Yudy Wu and Patrick Hoyle, Students' Guild President for a meeting.
On 31/10, I met up with Patrick to discuss my manifestos:
#1 - Anti-discrimination campaigns-Contacting Students' Guild Vice President Welfare and Diversity on Exeter speaks out.
#2 - Supporting international students
a) An international student survey to understand what matters most to the community.
b) Approaching the student employability academic success department about the careers fair for international students- the career zone in the mean time, at job fairs, they will identify employers who accept tier 4 visa applicants with a badge.
c) Festival of cultures during refreshers week so international students can showcase their cultures
d) Think of ideas on a possible bi-weekly or monthly event to bring together international societies/ students
#3- EU students' rights -Contact Yudy, Svenja Gümbel and Students' Guild Vice President Education for more details
#4- Better well-being services and culturally sensitive advertising - Contact Students' Guild Vice President Welfare and Diversity
#5-Affordable education - most of the university budgeting is allocated towards infrastructure and pay roll.
Thank you Patrick for your time and great signposting!

On 25/10, I first approached Billy Chivers who already had some data via his survey on international students' lives in Exeter University for his assignment. We analysed his survey results and discussed:
1. Career Fair for international students - Most employers invited to the job fairs in our uni do not hire international students. Since the parliament's discouraging response to the 30k signature petition to expedite post study-work visa to include 2020 international student graduates(read here: https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/273801) , we realised increasing work opportunities would be the next best thing.
2. Making the advertising of well-being services more culturally sensitive and inclusive to international students
3. Accomodation guarantee to short term students (e.g. erasmus stduents) and second year transfer students who are in the UK for the first time.
Thank you Billy for your time and ideas!
Petition: Bring the date for the post-study work visa closer to help current students I would like to request the government to bring the date for the 2-year post-study work visa closer to help current international students (i.e. students graduating before 2021) benefit from this too. It would be unfair to current international students otherwise.
