Meet our Member of the Month, Adam Garratt!
We asked Adam a few questions ahead of his exhibtion 'Embodied Labour: REWORKED' and the Maltings Taphouse & Bottleshop in Newton Abbot.
Give him a follow at https://www.instagram.com/adamsgarratt/ and visit the exhibition throughout November.

How did you get into printmaking?
I learned to screen print in my 2nd year of University when I was on an exchange programme in Rotterdam. I immediately loved the quality that screen printing could create along with the sounds, smells & the atmosphere of a print studio.
Tell us a little bit about your practice.
My practice very much leans into repetition, process & being economical. Screen printing is perfect as it allows for all of those things to come together. I gravitate to screen printing because its versatile, allowing me to print onto cardboard, plastics & mixed material sheeting. I have recently introduced figurative forms & images where an emerging theme of q***r identity & working classness is developing.
What do you like about Double Elephant?
Double Elephant offers a fantastic space to work in an environment that encourages exploration. It is founded by artists & the team are experts in all print processes, so the culture is focused on making good work, however that looks for each member.
What advice would you give to someone looking to get into printmaking?
Be nosey & ask to take a look around the studios. Look at what everyone is making & book onto a taster class.
Do you have any exhibitions or things you'd like to shout about that are coming up?
Yes. I have an exhibition called 'Embodied Labour REWORKED'. I will be exhibiting some new prints that I have been developing at Double Elephant alongside some sculptural forms & installations.
6) Anything else you'd like to mention?
Some of my new work is printed on the strips that hang in refrigerated trucks & walk in freezers. So come along to the exhibition to see prints on unusual materials.
Founder and Director .ripley said a sad farewell to his Columbian Press last week. Press engineers Giles Hovendon and colleague Mark from AMR dismantled it for the move up to new ownership in Shapinsey, Orkney for Cat Moore Printmaker.
This press came from Perth to Leicester to Exeter in 1996 where Lynn and Simon started Double Elephant with this press as their main press. It oved to Crediton in 2005 when Double Elephant moved into Exeter Phoenix and the ceiling was too low to house it!
Honiton Primary School's Year 5 and 6 students brought creativity to the library! We had great fun making drypoint prints. Thanks to Libraries Unlimited's Evolve Programme and Simon Ripley for making this day possible. ๐
