Solid surface begins life as a 12mm x 3660mm x 760mm sheet, from there it can be transformed beyond your standard countertops, however solid surface countertops are often anything but ‘standard’
•
The shelves were made to be screwed to the sides of three mirrored partitions, and wrap around the front, for customers tea, coffee etc.
•
Most shapes can be created with solid surface, providing you can figure out how to cut the pieces and glue them together, always perform a dry run to check you have enough clamps

Here is the latest kitchen build beginning to take shape
•
Generally I make my own drawer boxes, but I’m using the Blum Legrabox system on this project. I ordered in the runners and side walls and have machined the base boards and rear walls from black melamine. A simple rebate is required to fit into the runner, which is easily done on the spindle moulder
•
The Legrabox side walls are only 12/13mm thick and look so much better than the Tandembox -a common sight in your basic kitchen. I went with the standard Orion Grey, but also available in Black, White, Stainless etc.
•
Each cabinet has three drawers, the top drawer is internal, the internal fronts are aluminium, which I cut to length on the panel saw -turns out my solid surface blade is also for cutting aluminium, handy
•
I always suggest to customers to go with as many drawers as the budget allows, with the exception of a corner carousel and the sink cabinet, all the base cabinets have drawers, a total of 24 drawer boxes, certainly not the most I’ve done, but enough!
•

Here is a recently completed Birch ply cabinet for customer in Lyme Regis. Sprayed back boards and lacquered ply
•
The boxing across ceiling was removed so a length of Unistrut could be bolted to the joists to a carry a metal roller to mount a punch bag. The whole lot was then double plastered boarded and boxed in with 24mm birch ply. The punch bag can be moved to either side of the room, stoppers inside the Unistrut can be adjusted and hand tighten, to prevent the bag from moving
•
24mm Birch ply was used, to support some climbing stones. A number of random holes were drilled, with M10 pronged tee nuts on the rear side, the stones simply bolt through, and can be adjusted by the customer
•
The cabinet was made in the workshop and delivered to site for install
•
•
Blue pegs, to go with yesterdays birch ply peg board

•
•
Installation of the solid surface top today, made from Durasein Nocturne
•
Early start loading the top and delivering it to site, always good to see a job leave the workshop and head off to it’s new home
•
We finished the final sanding and polishing on site, if you’re in Exeter, you’ll be able to find this counter
•
•
Base units for the reception counter on site and installed today. Cabinets have been made from black Valcromat, spray finish clear lacquer. Birch ply drawer boxes on Movento runners
•
The solid surface countertop I made, is being delivered on Sunday morning. The top is made from Durasein Nocturn
•
The final sanding and polishing of the top will be completed on site
•
•
Here is the second glue up on the counter
•
A waterfall side connected to the top surface, I’m using Durasein solid surface Nocturne
•
Rather than a straight forward 90 degree, this section has been connected at a 10/80 degree angle, tapering inward to the base
•
Once I had finished trimming up the drop edges from Saturdays glue up, most of the day was spent getting the pieces cut and making sure they fit
•
Tomorrow I’ll be working on the front elevation
•
•
Here are the build ups being glued on the solid surface top for the Salon counter
•
First thing on Monday I’ll set the router up with a top bearing flush bit and trim up the edges
•
The rear and right hand side buildups are straight forward fabrication, the front and left hand side are more complicated
•
I also managed to fit the front and side panels, made from black valcromat, lacquered. The side section has been widened with a 40mm strip, mitred. The two panels have then been mitred, held together with Clamex P14, so it can be broken down for transportation
•
Start of a counter for a local hair salon in Exeter, four cabinets made from black Valcromat, sprayed with clear lacquer
•
The counter will have a solid surface top which will wrap around the side and front, fabricated from Durasein Nocturne (black)
•
This is the rear side, cupboards with removable shelves each end, drawers middle left, space for till middle right. Handless doors with Tip-on. Tip-on Movento runners

This 40mm oak rail continues from the base units into the tall cabinets
•
The rail is cut into side walls, however because of dividers between each cabinet, it doesn’t carry through, but it could
•
As with the Rousdon kitchen, birch ply cabinets are the way to go if you want a kitchen to last. Screws and fixings hold together so much better than MDF/chipboard, when it’s time to replace your kitchen, I’d give it some thought

•
The island in this kitchen is approximately 1200 x 2400mm with at least 200qty 20mm oak beads, here are the parts that make up the end panels and drawer fronts
•
The 20mm beads are rebated over 6mm oak strips. The oak has already been stained and lacquered pre glue up. Once the panels have been made, they’ll be trimmed to size, before being lacquered again
•
The oak has been glued with PU adhesive, which sets in about 30 minutes, the downside is you need to be super organised, all clamps at hand. I’ll do a dry run to make sure everything fits before applying the glue
•
With the larger panels I glue up three beads at a time, I also have a story stick with makers to make sure the beads don’t drift out of place
•
With the drawer fronts, I glue the whole lot up in one hit, three fronts glued up, another five to go

•
We have a load of 100mm strips to make up for the Pinhoe kitchen
•
Each piece is a strip of oak veneer board and a solid piece of oak
•
Rather than using the edge ba**er, we’ve gone with solid wood so they can withstand more wear and tear
•
The pieces make up a framework which will surround the cabinets
•
The oak is glued on oversize and trimmed with a lipping planer, it’ll then be stained and lacquered

Birch ply drawer boxes stacking up for latest kitchen build
•
Total of 30 drawers boxes, which will be fitted to Blum Movento runners, made from 15mm birch ply with 9mm baseboards. Runners are typically 550mm with a couple monster 750mm runners in the island unit
•
Similar construction to the recent Rousdon kitchen, but not a face frame kitchen
•
The birch is sprayed with clear AC lacquer to the components, everything is then cut length, jointed and glued together, baseboards slide into the place
