How can you use skiing to become a more capable and confident person?
Last weekend I took a group of individuals of all ages to Austria with the aim of using skiing as a way to develop a whole range of personal qualities:
1. Happiness
2. Encouragement
3. Thoughtfulness
4. Composure
5. Purposeful
6. Contribution
I asked everyone who joined to provide some feedback on what they had gained from the trip and what they learned and this is what they said:
Dana:
“I found a sense of community and became more mindful of expressing my feelings to others. I learned how to be kinder to people and myself. I also realised the importance of understanding an 'I'm okay - you're okay' perspective.
While skiing I learned about making decisions not only about what line to take but also being rational rather than emotional to combine looking after my safety with achieving my potential.”
Alex:
"When I started skiing I felt very fearful of being out of control of the skis. When I realised that the worst case scenario was that I would flop down into soft snow (the slope wasn’t very steep) and there were probably dozens of people around who would be pleased to help me. I understood that my feelings were ungrounded which helped me see that I can learn to be more proactive when handling unfamiliar situations. If I can do that it would make a huge difference to me and what I can achieve."
"When I am self-critical it is often because I have unrealistic expectations of how long it takes to achieve something and I would be better to do practicing without expectation and let the skill come on its own."
Ava:
“I learnt to be determined and persevere even when my feet hurt, and by persevering I learnt the solution to aching feet was a change in my skiing position. By changing my skiing posture, I was able to ski better. I am really looking forward to the next ski trip.”
Lisa:
“I learnt to always try and appreciate someone else’s perspective and look for the truth in what they are saying. By improving my understanding of others, I can reduce conflict and build better relationships.
The trip gave me and my daughter time away from work and school and I found we were able to build a closer and stronger bond.”
Doni:
“The trip helped me to understand that I matter. Growing up as a middle child I didn’t think that my needs and wants were significant and I had lower self-belief. Contributing to the trip as a ski coach helped me to see that I matter and I am better able to orient myself in the world in a purposeful and determined way, as well as increasing my own personal joy and contributing to others.”

The Muellers. Our story: Human Momentum offered us the opportunity to use the game of tennis as a psychological method to further improve our family harmony with myself, my wife and my two daughters aged 8 and 10.
Throughout the process it was explained that we could do nothing wrong on the court, and that ALL the shots we played were part of the learning process. For me as the Dad of Willow and Kaya it was great to see them both working together and helping each other learn instead of seeing each other as rivals or competitors. We all had a great time learning new mental and physical skills while strengthening our family connections.
Thank you again for everything you have done so far!
Nils.
Human Momentum Provides activity-based development which enables parents and young people to build self-confidence.
My story: Nine years ago my son was was diagnosed with autism, which meant it didn't always understand his thoughts and feelings and started suffering with anxiety on a daily basis, so I approached Ashley and asked for help.
Over the last three years Ashley at Human Momentum has offered consistent support with my son’s mental health, he has received many hours of coaching. During the conversations he learned to understand his thoughts and feelings which enable him to be more content. The coaching has assisted him to successfully navigate his relationships and his self-esteem has increased immeasurably.
The help he’s received from Human Momentum has meant that he is confident enough to now attend a mainstream college.

Scarlet. My Story:
"When I was 18 I was diagnosed with ADHD. There was value in this diagnosis, it confirmed thoughts and feelings that I had for a long time. However, after the first couple of weeks I started to think about all the limitations I had in life and all the things I wanted to achieve felt imposible. I was very worried about my A levels and this prevented me from studying. A couple of months before my exams I met Ashley from Human Momentum and started receiving coaching. My perspective on life drastically changed - I knew that whether I got the grades or not I would be OK. I learnt so much about myself and I know now that I am more than my condition and more than my intelligence. I was shocked about how much progress I have made and I have met some amazing people who have greatly impacted my life.
In December I went on a developmental ski trip, I learnt how to support my friends without rescuing them, by encouraging and listening rather than trying to solve their problems. I learnt about handling fears; whilst skiing it was useful to be relaxed and that being less rigid meant I had more control of the ski's, being relaxed in my mind means I am able to regulate my emotions better. After I had learnt the basics I set myself the goal of looking at snow for icier patches and where it was steeper. Since the trip, I have also been trying to be more aware of others and how their experience means they have different perceptions and interpretations than me. I gained lot's of independence going on the trip and it has led me to go skiing completely by myself to further my confidence in myself."

I have been fortunate to spend time with Ashley at Human Momentum, what I have learnt has undoubtedly made an immeasurable difference to myself as a father and to my son.
I have learnt to:
* Make conscious decisions about what we say and do to empower our son
* Amicably and collaboratively resolving differences of opinion in how we ‘parent’ (not always straightforward in the twilight hours with very little sleep!)
* Handle and make the best use of the clumsy comments or critical feedback from carers, grandparents and friends
* Bring into sharp focus the life limiting beliefs which my partner and I have understood more deeply
To date we have a happy and fun-loving little boy who is a joy to be around. Like many parents we are motivated to contribute to our son’s future and want to give him the best start in life. Our ambition is that he will grow up to be self-confident, assertive, respectful of others and with a mental toolkit and capability which will enable him to realise his life’s ambitions, whatever they may be. I am very grateful to Human Momentum.

My teenage son and I went on a weekend kayaking trip to support my son’s development. My son is dyslexic and can struggle with confidence, so we didn’t hesitate in accepting.
We had a great weekend and it gave us time to connect deeper level. By the end of the weekend I noticed that my son had gained a new found confidence and independence. I realised that he was more capable than I had imagined and it freed me to treat him as a more capable person.
It stretched my comfort zone as a Mum. I am so grateful for the impactful investment in his development! 👏
Thank you
Carol

Dana. My story:
Ever since I left Ukraine at 16, I have felt very unsettled in my life. Starting university only increased my self-doubt, particularly in my academic abilities. However, since meeting Ashley from Human Momentum and receiving coaching, my life has changed significantly and I have started to learn how to silence negative thoughts in my mind and prevent academic achievement from defining who I am. I realised that it is perfectly okay to be myself and I have begun to feel much happier. I have come to understand that the future holds countless opportunities for growth and excitement and I had the privilege of meeting incredible people who have added much meaning to my life.
During a recent ski trip with Human Momentum, I gained more self-belief and learned that while developing a new skill or pursuing a goal that being hard on yourself or being too self-critical is not beneficial to my well-being. I made a conscious effort to be kinder to myself while skiing and chose to stay positive, even when I fell or made mistakes, instead of feeling upset and disappointed. This experience helped me to confront my fears but still maintain emotional balance. The trip taught me how to empathise with others better, leading to a greater understanding of and respect for my friends' boundaries.

Human Momentum has enabled me to build a stronger relationship with my daughter Lilly.
At school Lilly’s caring nature opened the door to the possibility of negative influences from other classmates, she was inclined ‘help’ others who did not always have her best interests at heart. The Human Beings Club helped Lilly understand the negative impact of playground drama, she learned how to handle situations without becoming part of the drama. She has been empowered to do simple things like disengaging from critical conversations and choosing to go and play with a different friendship group, these changes have improved an already positive experience of school by adding social skills which will help her travel through life more smoothly.
She is also handling people’s misjudgement far better. She is able to identify if an accusation is valid, and if it’s not valid she can reconnect with herself and let the criticism go.
We would both highly recommend Human Momentum and the Human Beings Cub, which develops skills which can be used throughout a young person’s life whilst simultaneously developing sporting and outdoor skills.

Today marks the start of Children’s Mental Health Week (5th-11th Feb). The theme this year is ‘My Voice Matters’ which is about empowering children and young people to express themselves. For that reason, every day this week we will be sharing stories of families that we have worked with to significantly improve their mental health, confidence and happiness through self-expression and paradigm change. If we help our children build stronger paradigms now – we make a difference to their mental health for the rest of their lives.
Hundreds of parents have approached me to help improve their children’s happiness mental health so that they can handle the demands of daily life. Parents reported that many of the mainstream ‘solutions’ were not delivering so I decided to set up Human Momentum in order to provide families with a more fundamental approach - a new way of thinking.
At Human Momentum we offer:
* Optimising Your Own Performance - a mental fitness programme for adults (16+)
* Family Harmony Consultancy – making family adjustments to build greater family harmony
