N E W Y E A R S R E S O L U T I O N S

So many of us start out with good intentions in the year, only to find that, in time, motivation has slipped and old behaviours have crept back in... so, I wanted to share some information on how to make your goals sustainable and enjoyable because, now more than ever, it is important to stay focused and look after yourself ๐Ÿ‘€

To begin with, donโ€™t fix on the goal itself - the journey in which you take to reach your goal far exceeds the goal itself ๐Ÿ‘ฃ Change is where it all happens - so count all the small steps you take along the way!

When setting goals for yourself, look at things that mean something to you, and donโ€™t make goals for anyone else or that need validation from others โ€“ these are unlikely to be sustainable long term. Motivation that is intrinsic comes from within and provides a sense of mastery, purpose, and autonomy ๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ compared to extrinsic motivation which is influenced by external factors such as money, rewards, promotions or the number on the weighing scales ๐Ÿ’ท

Creating small positive changes in your daily life can really make a big difference - they all add up and make it manageable. A good way to start is to look at things in your life that energise you.โšก๏ธFeeling positive and energised will significantly help with your motivation ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿผ

Practice looking at your personal strengths and qualities โ€“ fill yourself with confidence so you have a sense of hope and excitement that you will succeed in the healthy habits and behaviours you have set out.ย

Break your goal down to set a routine that is achievable and realistic so you can stick to it and remain engaged, but if you are not achieving it, take it out of the routine and change it for something else.

โš ๏ธ And importantly, acknowledge and accept that because of one setback you may experience, it doesnโ€™t mean you have failed - it is a journey, and that doesn't mean plain sailing โ›ต๏ธ- if you are wanting change then you are already on the road to changing! ๐Ÿšด

So, enjoy the journey and praise yourself along the way! You have got this! ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿผ

Working on core stability and strength and always listening to what feels right for my body. Whilst I may not be lifting any heavy weights anymore, Iโ€™m finding new ways to give me that energy boost and enjoyment from moving my body. Iโ€™ve always loved practicing yoga, but it feels even better these days, especially in such glorious September sun! โ˜€๏ธ

Is there anything better than that smell of fresh air after itโ€™s just rained?๐Ÿ‘ƒ๐Ÿป๐ŸŒง๐Ÿ’—๐ŸŒˆ Everything feels so clean and fresh, it gives me the biggest boost in energy and clears my mind like nothing else. Getting outside for a walk everyday (most of the time, numerous times a day) during the the early days of motherhood was so important for my mental health, and I can now see all the benefits it brings to my toddler just from being in some green space. ๐ŸŒณ Whether itโ€™s to go bug hunting, bird watching or aeroplane spotting, I enjoy slowing down to be mindful around nature just as much as she does. ๐Ÿฅฐโ˜˜๏ธ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ

Nothing beats a feel good PT session in the sun โ˜€๏ธ๐Ÿ˜… (and later with an appearance of a bunny who hasnโ€™t quite got the hang of the treadmill! ๐Ÿ˜œ)

Iโ€™m looking forward to throwing open our gym doors and seeing all of my clients again next week. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐ŸผItโ€™s been a long time since Iโ€™ve seen some of my clients, we adapted well during lockdown but so Iโ€™m excited to get stuck back in and play around with our latest addition. I hope theyโ€™re ready to sweat! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ˜…

Come rain or shine, we still train outside and LOVE it! โ˜”๏ธ โ˜€๏ธ Well done to all my clients who have worked hard and kept their motivation up over the last few cold and wet months. Training can still be loads of fun (and if not, more fun) even when there is a complete downpour! Both of us are absolutely soaked but I loved laughing and working hard with my client this afternoon, who completely smashed it! ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿผ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ’ฆ
Iโ€™m looking forward to Sole2Soulโ€™s gym reopening on the 12th April, but thereโ€™s definitely something to be said for training outside in the rain ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒง๐ŸŒˆ

The more people I speak to, the more I hear people saying โ€œyesterday I just felt really low and unmotivatedโ€ and โ€œtoday I was having a better dayโ€ and โ€œIโ€™m just so up and down and I donโ€™t know whyโ€. I too feel like this, it is after all, a pretty rational and reasonable response to the challenges we all face every day.
However, after learning to accept that there will be โ€˜wobble daysโ€™ (and this is OK), we can all actively do things to make our lives feel more in control, purposeful and positive. Devon Partnership NHS Trust has adapted the governments 5 ways to well-being to look at the things we can do to keep well during lockdown and living in isolation. It is well worth reflecting on, even if you are already familiar with it - it is good practice to remind yourself of the things you are already doing, and perhaps identifying things that you could add to your life. If you feel you have a good handle on things at the moment, consider if anyone you know would benefit from looking at these key 5 areas in their life ๐Ÿ’ž
๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿผ connect ๐Ÿ“ž
๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿผ keep learning ๐Ÿ“š
๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿผ be active ๐Ÿšถ๐Ÿพโ€โ™€๏ธ
๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿผ take notice ๐Ÿง˜๐Ÿปโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ‘€
๐Ÿ‘‰๐Ÿผ give ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ
