BREAKING NEWS: Bandana Dog John's Daring Airfield Adventure!

Our beloved charity mascot, Bandana Dog John (BDJ), has been up to his usual mischief at the "Spitfires at Compton" event this weekend!

Last seen wagging his tail at Compton Abbas Airfield, BDJ mysteriously vanished faster than you can say "Spitfire"! After a frantic search (and a few panicked humans), we found our furry friend living his best life in "Drag 'Em Oot" - the legendary Dakota aircraft that led the American para drop on D-Day!

Seems like BDJ fancied himself as a paratrooper for a day! But wait, there's more...
Just as we thought we'd caught up with our four-legged Houdini, he's taken off on another adventure! Our friends at Aero Legends have whisked him away to Headcorn in Kent. Talk about a dog with wanderlust!

But fear not, we have it on good authority (a little birdie told us... or was it a Spitfire?) that BDJ will be back in time for Sunday's show. Let's hope he doesn't get any ideas about piloting a plane!

Keep your eyes peeled for a bandana-wearing, adventure-seeking pooch this Sunday. Who knows where he'll pop up next?

Remember, folks, all of BDJ's escapades are in good fun and in support of Veterans With Dogs. We're still here at Compton Abbas Airfield, ready to chat and share our mission with you all!

Jet, like all our assistance dogs in training, is preparing for a very purposeful role in a veteran's life.
We're incredibly proud of Jet and grateful to Liberty Orchard for providing him with this valuable experience. It's through these early interactions and exposures that our puppies develop into the confident, capable assistance dogs that will one day transform veterans' lives.
A big thank you to Liberty Orchard for their support and for giving Jet such a warm welcome. Together, we're taking steps (or should we say paw prints?) towards a brighter future for veterans across the UK.
Stay tuned for more updates on Jet and our other amazing puppies-in-training!

As the summer heat intensifies, it's crucial to be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke in our furry friends.

Heat exhaustion can quickly escalate into heatstroke, which requires immediate attention. Here are some signs to watch out for:

Excessive panting
Anxiety or restlessness
Lack of response to commands
Rapid heartbeat
High fever
Vomiting or diarrhoea
Collapse or loss of consciousness

If you suspect your dog is experiencing heatstroke, it's essential to act quickly and calmly:
Seek veterinary advice immediately
Move your dog to a cool, shaded area
Gradually reduce their body temperature by applying towels soaked in cool water to their hairless areas, such as the groin and feet

Remember, prevention is key! Always provide plenty of fresh water, shade, and avoid exercising your dog during the hottest parts of the day.

Let's work together to keep our beloved canine companions safe and healthy this summer. If you have any concerns or questions, don't hesitate to consult with your veterinarian.

24/06/2024

Attention all dog lovers and pet owners! As the temperature rises, it's crucial to keep our furry friends safe and cool.

Did you know that dogs are not always aware of the dangers heat can bring?

That's why they rely on us to monitor them closely, especially if they are older, overweight, or have breathing difficulties.

Here are some tips to help keep your canine companion cool this summer:

Always have cool, fresh water available for your dog to drink and prevent dehydration.
Offer frozen dog treats for an extra refreshing experience!
Be vigilant and watch for signs of heatstroke, such as excessive panting, drooling, or weakness.

If you notice any signs of distress, take appropriate measures to cool them down, like moving them to a shaded area or using a damp towel.

Remember, your attentiveness can make all the difference in keeping your dog safe and comfortable during the hot summer months.

Let's work together to ensure our beloved canines stay cool and happy all season long!

23/06/2024

At Veterans With Dogs, we want to share some essential tips to ensure your dog stays safe during the hot weather.

Always provide plenty of fresh, clean water for your dog to stay hydrated. You can even add ice cubes to their water bowl for an extra cooling effect!

Make sure your dog has access to shaded areas when outdoors. You can create a cool space inside your home with air conditioning or provide a cooling mat for them to lie on.

Feed your dog during the cooler times of the day, as hot weather can affect their appetite. Regularly groom them to remove excess hair and allow their skin to breathe.

Avoid walking your dog during the hottest parts of the day, and always check the pavement temperature before taking them out. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws!

By following these simple tips, you can help your beloved dog stay cool, comfortable, and safe throughout the summer months. Remember, if you have any concerns about your dog's health during hot weather, always consult your veterinarian for advice.

Let's enjoy the summer together while keeping our dogs' well-being a top priority! Stay cool, everyone!

Every year, thousands of former servicemen and women struggling with their mental health due to military trauma turn to charities like Veterans With Dogs.

On average, it takes 13 years from leaving the military for a veteran to seek help. For many, the battle continues at home as they struggle to leave their experiences behind.

As the UK's leading veterans' assistance dog charity, last year we helped over 200 former servicemen and women. However, this is just a fraction of the number that could benefit from the companionship and support of a specially trained assistance dog to aid in their recovery and help them live happy, productive lives.

A decade after Britain's involvement in the Afghanistan conflict formally ended, and 13 years post the Iraq War, it's a sombre prediction that there are many more veterans struggling today and contemplating reaching out to an assistance dog charity like ours for the first time.

If you or someone you know is a veteran facing mental health challenges, know that you are not alone. Assistance dogs provide invaluable support and can be a lifeline on the path to recovery.

Today We Remember

Today, Falkland Islanders mark the 42nd anniversary of their liberation and the end of the Falklands War. This significant milestone serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by our brave veterans who fought to protect the islands and their people.

At Veterans With Dogs, we understand the profound impact that conflict can have on those who serve. Our assistance dogs are trained to provide emotional support and comfort to veterans struggling with mental health issues, including PTSD. These incredible canines are a testament to the power of companionship and the importance of supporting our heroes.

As we reflect on the events of 1982, let us also acknowledge the ongoing struggles faced by many veterans. We must continue to raise awareness and provide vital support to those who have given so much for our country.

Let's come together to make a difference:

Share this post to show your support for our veterans.

Skydiving for a Cause

Casey Chalkley is taking the ultimate leap of faith to raise funds for Veterans With Dogs. This daring skydive, scheduled for the end of July 2024, is a heartfelt tribute to her late fiancé, Jack Kirmond, who tragically lost his life in August 2022.

Jack's Story: Courage and Resilience
Jack courageously served in the army for seven years, but his service came at a great cost. He suffered from severe PTSD, a condition that affects many veterans. Despite the challenges, Jack found solace in their beloved dog, Ralph. Although Ralph was not a trained assistance dog, he provided Jack with a sense of purpose and comfort during his darkest days.

A Legacy of Hope
Casey's fundraiser aims to make a difference in the lives of other veterans who have served their country and struggle with PTSD. By supporting Veterans With Dogs, Casey hopes to honour Jack's memory and bring hope to those who need it most.

As the first UK organisation to specialise in providing trained assistance dogs for veterans with mental health difficulties, Veterans With Dogs is dedicated to making a real difference.

Support Casey's Sky Dive Fundraiser
With 60 supporters already backing her cause, Casey has raised an impressive 91% of her £1,000 target. Every donation counts, and your contribution can help bring assistance dogs to those who need them most.

Give Now and share this inspiring story to help Casey reach her goal and make a lasting impact on the lives of veterans with mental health conditions.
