Love your spud
Spring time planting in the ground
Seed potato bedded down, darkness all around.
With earth deep furrows, set firm
Sometimes a wiggly slug, or a worm.
Then slowly in rows, two leaves appear on top,
While underground the tubers are the main crop.
Some sunshine to grow stalks and flowers,
Rain is most welcome, lots of light showers.
I could dig a few, for new potatoes with salad,
A summer season treat, always with butter added.
But they are only small, yet oh so tasty ,
Patiently waiting, try not to be hasty.
Autumn time and the harvester enters the field,
The farmer gets to see the yield.
Pickers ride on board, throwing out stones and mud,
As the elevator passes by, what’s left is the spud .
Sun and dry weather is what we need now to lift the beds,
But alas, we’ve thrown out clods of mud the size of some cows' heads.
Plenty of shouts of Whoa, it’s been more stops than go ,
Even big tractor needed a tow.
Trailers full are tipped in the shedies ,
Boxes are stacked up high with teddies.
Back in the yard to be stored and graded,
Most days finish when the light has faded.
So when you buy a bag of spuds from your Exe Valley farm shop,
Hand picked they are, only the best of the crop.
Please don’t moan saying
“ oh they’re muddy “
I like to see you on the harvester… buddy!
Potato you are our most versatile veg,
Roasties and mashing, boiling or wedge,
Jackets and sauté, crisps or fries whatever way,
We cook them at mealtimes almost every day.
So when you see that potato,
As it sits on your plate,
Think of the lengths we’ve had to go too,
It’s time to appreciate,
To the farmers we say thank you for all you do,
The humble potato we love you.
