Although the disease was wiped out after about a year, farming and tourism took a longer hit. Penny and John Adie decided to create a festival to bring cheer to the local people and the economy. We're excited to welcome violinist & composer Henning Kraggerud to Exeter for the final event of this year's Festival on Sunday 13 October.
Since the 17th century, theorists, philosophers and composers have discussed the intrinsic properties of musical keys, and their links to time and space. These discussions and ideas inspired Henning Kraggerud and the world-famous author of Sophie's World Jostein Gaarder to collaborate on Equinox.
Equinox comprises four concertos - Afternoon, Evening, Night and Morning - each of which consists of six postludes, making 24 in all. These postludes are written in 24 keys and depict 24 hours and 24 time zones, taking the listener on a kaleidoscopic tour across the world and time, and journeying musically through the circle of fifths, beginning in C major. The postludes are by turn joyful, mournful, effervescent and heart-wrenching.
Jostein Gaarder has written an original accompanying 24-part narrative, 24 keys to a world before it slips away. The story charts a man's journey through time from the Meridian Line in Greenwich, London. As he awaits a potentially serious medical diagnosis, the protagonist decides to make the most of his 24 hours of freedom by visiting every time zone.
Equinox was premiered in 2014 at the opening concert of the Northern Lights Festival in Tromsø, and later performed with Jostein Gaarder narrating at both the Nordland Music Festival in Bodø and the Risør Festival of Chamber Music.

Early music vocal ensemble Stile Antico bring their atmospheric 'Toward the Dawn' programme to All Saints' Church, Okehampton on Thursday 10 October at 7.30pm.
Their programme charts a course from twilight to sunrise, seductive and unsettling in equal measure. Taverner’s mighty Ave Dei patris filia stands at the end of a delicious sequence of sacred music, chansons and madrigals by English and Continental composers including Byrd, Lassus and Tallis. Thrill to the spine-tingling sounds of Allegri’s beloved Miserere and enter into the glorious sound world of Nico Muhly’s Gentle Sleep, a haunting setting of words by Shakespeare, written especially for the twelve voices of Stile Antico.
There are very few tickets left for this performance so book soon to avoid disappointment!

Comprising of four concertos - Afternoon, Evening, Night and Morning - 'Equinox', composed by Kraggerud, takes the listener on a kaleidoscopic tour across the world and time, with an accompanying narrative written by Jostein Gaarder (Sophie's World).
