Meet our intern Natalia!
Natalia is from Mexico and has travelled to Scotland to undertake a six month global studies internship here at St. James Research Centre.
Natalia loves pizza and any kind of sports, even extreme sports! Her favourite colour is purple. Her favourite place to visit is San Diego. She comes from a big family, with one younger brother and three older sisters.

We asked her some questions:
1) If money was not an issue, and you could do anything you wanted on a weekend, what would it be?
"Go surfing on Bali or diving in Australia or skiing in Switzerland."

2) What is one thing special or unique about yourself?
"I am really passionate and driven. I love adrenaline and help people feel it too."

3) What did you enjoy about your time at St. James Research Centre?
"What I really liked about my time here as an intern at the St James Research Centre was all the people I got to know and that I had a lot of time to see and get to know Scotland. The hours were very flexible, which allowed for a lot of time to explore around Scotland on the weekends and really made it feel like a home away from home!"

Meet our intern Lindsey!

Lindsey is from Phoenix, Arizona and has travelled to Scotland to undertake a six month global studies internship here at St. James Research Centre.

Lindsey loves Barbacoa Street Tacos, kayaking, fishing, and baking! So far in Scotland her favourite place has been the beautiful sea side village Oban and she is loving to take advantage of our amazing public transport system for travel.

We have asked Lindsey a couple of questions regarding her experince during the internship!

1. Do you feel passionate about our mission at St. James Research Centre?

The vision and work Global Family was doing in communities around the world was the driving force in my application to this internship. I wanted to make a difference with my work and I felt like this program would give me then chance to do so.

2. What have you enjoyed most about the internship so far?

While having time to research and learn more about the effects of Human Trafficking has been extremely enlightening, my favourite part of the internship has been the relationships I have been able to foster with co-workers. In the last two months they have become my home away from home.

3. What has been the most rewarding aspect so far?

During my internship we had a global summit where I was able to meet representatives from each country in which Global Family is active. By the end of this summit, I was able to better understand the full extent of the way Global Family is active. By the end of this summit I was able to better understand the full extent of the way Global Family is positively impacting communities and I couldn’t be provider go be part os such an amazing organisation.

4. What has been the most challenging aspect of the internship?

Time management. With multiple different projects constantly going on, my time management skills have been put to test. However, its been an amazing learning experience.

5. Would you recommend this internship to other students?

1000% Not only is it an amazing career opportunity but the opportunity allows you to connect with people from around the world making amazing memories.

Has the recent conflict between Ukraine and Russia caused an increase of human trafficking within Ukrainian residents fleeing war? This post aims to provide a discussion on how local organisations and volunteers are protecting vulnerable citizens.

According to the United Nations, more than 12 million people are believed to have fled their homes in Ukraine since the war commenced. Within that staggering statistic, over 5.6 million have fled to neighbouring countries, mostly women and children (BBC News, 2022).

Undoubtedly, those women and children fleeing from the current war in Ukraine are at tremendous risk of human trafficking due to the sudden increase of vulnerability these citizens are facing. IOM Ukraine’s Chief of Missions stated, “We know how quickly the criminal world adjusts to changing realities and finds new victims. We call on Ukrainians and other nationals leaving Ukraine to stay alert and be cautious when on the move, at a new place or at home” (The Cube, 2022).

Human Trafficking in Arizona.

When topics like s*x trafficking, human trafficking, and modern slavery are brought up, a majority of Americans will associate these with low- and middle-income countries. Even though the Thirteenth Amendment was passed in 1865, which abolished slavery in the United States, the practice is still alive and well today.

Arizona is a hot, vast, desert-ridden state and the sixth-largest in the nation. Additionally, Arizona is one of the four states bordering Mexico, making it a hub for human trafficking. In fact, in 2017, Arizona was reported to have the third-highest rate of human trafficking in the nation. However, after valiant efforts from the local law enforcement, these numbers have subsided significantly.

Modern Slavery may be closer to home than you think.

It’s vital that non-profits, governments, and organisations continue to educate the wider population on the signs of modern slavery. The more individuals who can recognise and report modern slavery, the more effectively we can safeguard victims and bring traffickers to justice!

If you suspect modern slavery, please don’t hesitate to report it to the Modern Slavery Helpline on 08000 121 700 or the police on 101. In a suspected emergency, always call 999.

You could save a life.
