What a wonderful evening we had with the women of Dorset Ukrainian Community at Poole Lighthouse last week! Their performance as the 'Sisterhood of Stories', and how they shared with us their experiences of leaving Ukraine, was both powerful and deeply moving. DEED thanks everyone who joined us for the evening, with special thanks to Anastasia Pikalova as Artistic Director, and Poole Lighthouse as our host for the evening.

Today is International Migrant's Day and in this video DEED's Louise Boston-Mammah talks about the 'Where We Can Call Home' project. 'Where We Can Call Home' is a community heritage project telling the stories of people from Bournemouth, Christchurch & Poole’s ethnically diverse communities and how their journeys from different places have led them to make BCP their home. We have a team of community researchers who have recorded over 50 interviews with members of the local BCP community. Their stories will be shared as part of an exhibition and website; brought alive as part of a local storytelling festival; discussed as part of a podcast; included in learning materials for schools; and form part of an important historical archive held by Dorset History Centre for future generations to study and research. We feel that it is really important to build more knowledge, empathy and understanding of local diversity, and its impact and importance in the community. Their incredible journeys, told beautifully, immerse you in their world, just for a moment. They provoke questions of us, as listeners, about how we can change our communities for the better. You can choose to refuse single-use plastics in July (and beyond!). Best of all, being part of Plastic Free July will help you to find great alternatives that can become new habits forever. We are excited to see so many young people now engaged in issues related to climate change, plastic pollution, the oceans, and biodiversity loss. And while these are all big, complex and interconnected issues, there are local actions we can all take to make a difference. Through our 'WhatSUP? Rethinking Single Use Plastic Children’s Workshops' we can help your pupils, staff and wider school community to explore and ‘rethink’ the use of Single Use Plastic (SUP). We investigate the impact of our disposable culture through images, activities, and resources and seek to find alternatives that are more sustainable. Our aim is to inspire everyone to take positive action to reduce, refill and reuse, and to play a part in improving our local and global environment. We can tailor our workshops to suit the ages of your young people and are happy working with a small community group as well as a whole school. Please contact us to discuss details: [email protected] #plasticfreejuly #plasticfreejuly2023 #plasticfree #plasticpollution #stopplasticpollution #reuse #reuserecycle #workshops #whatsup?workshops #deed #deedgloballearningandeducation #sustainability #sustainabilitymatters

Tomorrow is International Day of Families, they come in all shapes and sizes but should always be somewhere you feel safe.

World Book Day 2023
We love seeing all the children going to school dressed as their favourite fictional characters on World Book Day. Books are wonderful tools that allow students to better understand the thoughts and experiences of others. Developing a global, compassionate outlook requires encouraging empathy and an intimate understanding of the diverse experiences around the world. World Book Day offers an opportunity to develop empathy for those living in different national, economic and cultural contexts. Students can be shown the incredible diversity of literature, and be encouraged to read something written by someone very different from themselves. #worldbookday #worldbookday2023 #celebratingworldbookday #books #celebratingbooks #connection #reading #diversity #school #learning #globallearning #deed #deedgloballearningandeducation #deedglobaleducationandlearning

Fairtrade Fortnight 2023
Today is the first day of Fairtrade Fortnight which gives us the opportunity to really focus on Fairtrade – what it means, why it’s important, and how we can use it in schools to enrich the curriculum and global learning. Our training course and workshops for children offer support to help you investigate the impact and benefits of Fair Trade. This popular topic links well to children’s sense of fairness and unfairness and can enrich all areas of the curriculum as well as work on children’s rights. We can also share with you resources and simulation games to enable children to role-play the production of cocoa, find out about the journey of a banana, hold a fair-trade fashion show, wear fair-trade cotton and explore the life of a fair-mined gold miner. Our training is designed to support staff with classroom activities, resources, displays and websites to investigate the impact and benefits of Fair Trade and how this links to the curriculum, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the Fairtrade School Award. Do get in touch to find out more [email protected]

In Jolly Good Company are 4!
Every year on January 4th, World Braille Day reminds us of the importance of accessibility and independence for those who are blind or visually impaired. About 36 million people around the world are blind. By 2050, the number of people diagnosed with blindness is predicted to rise to 115 million. Those who are blind or who have severe vision impairments face many challenges in life. Some of these challenges include navigating new environments, using a computer, handling cash, and arranging clothes. Blind people have ways to successfully deal with many of these situations. In today’s world, advanced technology and voice activation make a blind person’s life much more manageable. But one invention, in particular, has helped countless numbers of blind people. This invention is called braille and it was developed nearly 200 years ago. Braille gives blind people the ability to read and even write letters. The system consists of raised dots that form letters and words which are read by touch. Louis Braille invented the reading system of raised dots in 1824. Born on January 4, 1809, in France, Louis would lose his sight after an accident in his father’s harness shop at the age of three. He would later attend the National Institute for Blind Children in Paris. There, his interest in music would benefit him when at the age of 10 he would meet Charles Barbier, a captain in Napolean’s army. The captain taught the students about a communication code using dots called Night Writing. Combining his knowledge of music and the inspiration of code communication, Louis Braille invented a 6 dot fingertip reading system when he was only 15 years old. Louis died in 1852, two years before France’s Royal Institute for the Blind Youth adopted a braille curriculum. By 1916, schools in the United States were teaching braille to their blind students. #braille #louisbraille #worldbrailleday #worldbrailleday2023 #blind #blindness #blindawareness #deed #diversity #diversitymatters

Happy Diwali everyone

This is an extract from Louise Boston-Mammah's talk on Black History and the Holocaust given at Bournemouth and Poole’s Holocaust Memorial Day event which was recently held online. She was asked to research the stories of Black Germans, some of whom survived, and some of whom died, during the Holocaust. Her research raises many questions about the nature of multicultural Europe at the beginning of the 20th Century. DEED supports education and innovation by encouraging and inspiring teachers, pupils and community members to develop their understanding of cultural diversity. We offer training for adults and teachers on a range of themes including Multicultural Britain and Black History. For more information visit our website or email Louise at [email protected] Museum of East Dorset Dorset Race Equality Council CoDEC
