Eid-ul-Adha is the second Eid festival of the calendar year This festival commemorates the willingness of Abraham to obey God by sacrificing his beloved son Ishmael - in the end God gave Abraham a sheep to sacrifice instead. As they celebrate Eid-ul-Adha, Muslims remind themselves of their own obedience to God and willingness to sacrifice anything to His wishes.

Yarrells School’s World Ocean Day Litter Pick was a HUGE success as loads of pupils went out litter picking in so many different places.

Approximately 45 pupils took part but the information is still coming in and the parents are all talking about it. So much better than meeting in one place!

One group even did it as part of their birthday party! Lots more people were able to take part and it was important for the children to see that together, all our collective actions do make a difference.

We have been inspired by Oly Rush from Project Planet Earth, who started off as 'just one person' as he put it. He has galvanised lots of people to work together and really make a positive impact on the world to protect our seas."

On World Environment Day we are proud to share outcomes from our latest project: Drain Art ‘Save Our Seas’ & ‘Only Rain Down the Drain’

Pupils at Heatherlands Primary School in Poole and Mudeford Junior school in Christchurch have been exploring the impact of litter on the local and global environment. Working with Sarah from DEED, and Mirek from Miroslav Lucan ( LucanArt ), groups of Year 5 pupils have designed artwork for drains in their school grounds to encourage everyone to look down and consider where their litter goes when it is thrown ‘away’.

While everyone did such a good job, it was Amelia and Christina in Heatherlands and Noah in Mudeford who came up with the winning designs of ‘Save Our Seas’ and ‘Only Rain Down the Drain’ as these were the most eye catching and powerful in their messaging.

Throughout this project the focus has been on raising awareness about our interconnection with the ocean - what happens when we drop litter on the streets, which can get washed down the drain, into the rivers and out to sea. Ocean plastic pollution is one of many environmental problems we are facing, and small actions like Drain Art really help our young people to be part of a more positive future.

This project has made been possible thanks to the talented Miroslav Lucan who brought the pupils’ designs to life, and funding from the Wessex Water Foundation Environment Fund via Dorset Community Foundation. Contact Sarah at DEED for more information.

Today is World Environment Day a day which aims to deepen public awareness of the need to look after and care for the environment.

This year, the theme is "Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience."

It's tied in with bringing back healthy land, keeping deserts from developing and managing water shortages. Trees, healthy soil, and clean water are imperative for a thriving planet.

A good conversation starter, suggested by Reboot The Future is "To look after ourselves we must also look after the environment. Why do you think this is? What happens when we harm the environment?"

June is Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month.

Gypsies, Roma and Travellers are the largest ethnic minority community in the European Union with over 12 million people across the EU and some 300,000 in the UK. They are very marginalised groups of people that have suffered, and continue to suffer, extreme levels of prejudice. This is an important time to learn about common misconceptions, the richness of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller cultures and how our society can support them better.

DEED works with Kushti-Bok, a charity that provides a voice for Dorset’s Gypsy and Traveller community and Life Changing Choices, a local gym supporting mental health and fitness to support local Gypsies and Travellers tell their own stories.

Together, we want local Gypsy and Traveller communities to let others know that their lifestyles may be different but their hopes, dreams and concerns for the future are the same as those of the wider community. We hope these stories will help challenge the negative image that many people have of Gypsies and Travellers, who often experience prejudice and discrimination.

The world is seeing hard-won progress in protecting the rights of le***an, gay, bisexual, transgender, q***r, intersex and asexual people – but there is still a long road ahead.

To spotlight the advances and challenges, the theme of the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia this year is: “No one left behind: Equality, freedom and justice for all.”

You will need to ensure your classroom is a safe space to talk about gender issues. There is a lot of language around gender, transgender and the use of male and female that can be discussed. Respect is key and listening to each other. Model respectful language. Avoid using stereotypes, assumptions and generalisations, ‘all’ and ‘every’ can be over used. Students need to be specific and personal ‘in my opinion’ and ‘in this example.’ Asking questions about where opinions come from can help students be more specific and relate it more to their personal experience and help avoid stereotypes and generalisations.

Throughout the topic you can start and finish with big questions to reflect on, for example:

• Why does equality matter?
• How can we change how people think?
• What sort of world do we want in 2030?
• Collect your own big questions to explore, discuss or debate.

Mental Health Awareness Week was set up by the Mental Health Foundation in 2001. It is an annual event designed to raise awareness of mental health issues and highlight the support required for achieving good mental health. Every year there is a specific theme which highlight things like kindness, loneliness and body image.

We all feel sad or overwhelmed from time to time, but if we are open and honest about it others can help us. How can you tell if someone is having trouble with their mental health? What are some good ways to help?

Check out 's website for some excellent resources and links for dealing with this event. https://globaldimension.org.uk/calendar/mental-health-awareness-week/2024-05-13/

Saturday 11th is World Fair Trade Day.

When you buy your coffee do you ever think about where it came from or who made it? How many people were part of the process to get that delicious cuppa to you? If something is really cheap, how was that possible?

Our training course and workshops for children offer support to help you investigate the impact and benefits of Fair Trade. This popular topic links well to children’s sense of fairness and unfairness and can enrich all areas of the curriculum as well as work on children’s rights. We can also share with you resources and simulation games to enable children to role-play the production of cocoa, find out about the journey of a banana, hold a fair-trade fashion show, wear fair-trade cotton and explore the life of a fair-mined gold miner.

Our training is designed to support staff with classroom activities, resources, displays and websites to investigate the impact and benefits of Fair Trade and how this links to the curriculum, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, and the Fairtrade School Award.

WhatSUP? Rethinking Single Use Plastic Training

Plastic has made life possible, bringing greater conveniences to people around the world. It has enabled great innovations and it lasts longer than a lifetime BUT more than 40% is used just once (Single Use Plastic SUP) and then thrown ‘away’… but where is ‘away’?

This is just one of the questions we ask as part of our training and workshop programme under the project WhatSUP? – Rethinking Single Use Plastic – which we can deliver to schools and community groups across the county. Our training, advice and support will help give you ways of exploring the difference between single use plastic and more sustainable alternatives. It will inspire everyone to take positive action to reduce, refill and reuse, and so play a part in improving our local and global environment.

We can help you develop and expand your work on recycling as well as plan for arts projects, explore the links to Eco Schools, inspire local community action and link to school values and art enrichment to protect our world. We are happy to tailor this training to meet your needs.

Great news for schools in Dorset 💚🌏

🌿 Sustainable Dorset is supporting Dorset Council raise county-wide awareness of one of the biggest educational programmes in the world, the Eco-Schools framework. 🎓

Eco-Schools is the world's largest educational programme, guiding schools worldwide to embrace sustainability and reduce their environmental footprint. Sustainable Dorset is proud to be the local platform for Eco-Schools across our county to connect, collaborate, and share innovative ideas. 📚💡

But what exactly are Eco-Schools? 🤔 It's a transformative seven-step framework that empowers young minds to drive change in their schools, communities, and beyond. Since 1994, millions of students globally have embarked on this journey, earning the prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag for their dedication.

By connecting their activities to ten Eco-Schools Topics, students tackle large environmental issues like climate change in manageable, focused themes. This approach prompts them to explore practical changes they can make in their school and daily lives. 🌱

We’ve already started showcasing some of the incredible Dorset schools taking part. Head over to our website - https://www.sustainabledorset.org/eco-schools - to find out more. And, if you know of any amazing school-led activity, please leave a comment or get in touch via email.

Happy Earth Day - today reminds us of the importance of environmental protection and sustainability.

Climate change, the ecological crisis and the related losses of biodiversity are huge issues for the future that we need to tackle and find solutions for today. Our work at DEED is to support teachers and community leaders by encouraging in-depth study of these issues, looking at their local and global causes and the links between them, and examining potential solutions. Our workshops and training aim to inspire people to rethink their attitude to single-use items and move towards more sustainable alternatives.

We highlight the importance of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as a useful framework of 17 Global Goals which act as a powerful 'hook' around which lesson plans, resources and ideas can be developed.

Contact Sarah Wise ([email protected]) to find out how we can help and support you. Our training can be delivered in your school or community venue, at times to suit, as a short presentation, staff meeting or part of a whole day event. We will happily discuss tailoring the content to your specific needs.

Today is World Heritage Day - a day to celebrate the great old buildings and monuments of the past. But what if a monument was built to celebrate someone who was a bad person? In the UK there have been calls to remove statues of former slave traders and racists. What do you think we should do? Is it important to keep old statues standing so that we can learn from them or should we take them down and place them in museums?
