FIREWORKS.

Here's some good advice from the RSPCA about what you can do to help your pet if the sound of fireworks makes them scared.

There are some affective over-the-counter products that can really help such as plug-in pheromones like Feliway and Adaptil and calming neutraceuticals such as Nutracalm.

If your pet really suffers with the noise of fireworks then there are some stronger prescription products such as Sileo for dogs. If you have any questions or just need some advice, please get in touch and a member of our team will be more than happy to help!

It's that time of the year again! At 2am we all need to join in with Cher and 'Turn Back Time' by an hour! Yes, it's going to be darker earlier - Boo! But at least there'll be an extra hour in bed - Whoo Hoo!

UK PET VACCINE SHORTAGE
Over recent days, you may have seen news coverage about supply issues with pet vaccines in the UK, with reports of pets being turned away from vaccination appointments.

If you are registered with Abbeywell Vets and if your pets are due their vaccines or if you have a puppy or a kitten needing their initial vaccination course - please do not worry.

We have managed to secure a good supply of all essential pet vaccines, including Rabies vaccines for pet travel. This supply of vaccines will allow us to provide a normal service, whilst the vaccine supply issues are hopefully resolved over the coming months.

URGENT & IMMEDIATE RECALL OF *CAT FOOD*
If you are feeding your cat any of the following dry diets please stop feeding it immediately. For the sake of any doubt, this is cat food only, not dog food.

The food has been recalled as a precaution due to the evidence of a possible link with a fatal illness. The cause is being urgently investigated and as we wait for the result the food has been recalled.

Vets across the UK spotted an emerging illness that was fatal to cats, when concerns were shared through various veterinary professional networks a commonality was found and the manufacture of the dry food was notified.

Please contact the store that you purchased your food to enquire if the specific food you have is being recalled and to find out about their returns policy. If anyone was using AVA foods etc. when it was last urgently recalled the process is probably the same.

Here is a list of some of the recalled dry foods, but it's important that you check with the store where you purchased the food for an up to date list as this may change.

In the meantime, if you are wondering what to feed your pets, many brands such as Hills and Virbac undergo extensive feeding trials under close supervision before they are put on the shelves. All the pets belonging to the Abbeywell Team are fed on Hills.

COVID VACCINES - 23 OR OLDER
Anyone who is 23 years old before 1st July can get a Pfizer COVID vaccine at the Folca Centre in Folkestone tomorrow without an appointment - That's Wednesday 16th June.

The centre will open at 8.30am until 6pm - To speed things up take some proof of your age and if you have it, your NHS number.

Vaccines will be distributed on a first come, first served basis - so what are you waiting for!

BABY BIRDS - IT'S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR.
We've had a large number of Fledglings brought to our surgery that are fit and healthy and were probably under the care of their parents - so we thought we would post the advice provided by the RSPCA about what to do if you find a 'Nestling' or a 'Fledgling'.

It is natural for a Fledgling to be on the ground as they have left the nest and are preparing to fly - However birds without feathers are Nestlings and may need assistance. It's very common in the spring and summer to find baby birds on the ground. Birds take far better care of their babies than humans can, so if you find a baby bird, keep pets away and follow the advice below.

Today we say a sad farewell to Ryan, one of our star Nurses! We wish him all the very best as he takes up his new roll as Head Nurse at a Veterinary Hospital in Canterbury! Ryan does like a badge or two, so one of his leaving gifts was very easy! 😂 Good Luck Ryan!

CAT MICROCHIPPING.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has announced that microchipping will be compulsory for cats in the United Kingdom. It has already been compulsory for dogs for some time. This is part of a new wider Action Plan for Animal Welfare - more news to follow as it's released.

If you have visited our surgery over the last year, you'll know we've been using lots of PPE including masks, googles, gloves, aprons etc. and all our staff have had weekly In-House COVID tests - so we can keep everyone as safe as possible.

As the COVID rates continue to decrease and as the vaccine numbers increase, you will notice a reduction in the amount of PPE our team is wearing. However, as we reduce the level of PPE we are working in partnership with the NHS and increasing the COVID In-House Testing to multiple times each week.

The way we have been providing our services has been designed to keep everyone as safe as possible. We have a number of options for you when you visit our practice and you are welcome to come inside our surgery or to take a seat outside - whatever makes you feel safe and comfortable.
