It's Autism Awareness Week so please be aware of what NOT to say to your friends who have autistic children 😏 This is a select few from a very long list! 😉

⚠️ "But we're all a little bit autistic"
Please stop this. Sharing a few traits with an autistic person does not mean you're autistic too. It means you share a few traits, from an extremely long list of in depth and complex struggles that have a significant impact on their life every single day 🤦🏻‍♀️

⚠️"Maybe he'll grow out of it"
Shooketh to my coreth when someone hit me with this outdated and uneducated line last year. It's not a phase. Or an illness to get better from. Autistic children will grow in to, shock horror, autistic adults 💡

⚠️ "Yeah my kid is a picky eater too"
Great, but my kid is not. My kid has food aversions which means alternative or new brands, packaging, colour, texture, smell and taste can cause distress. It's not 'picky' because it's not preference. It's need for predictability. And no, he won't eat it if he's hungry enough 🙄

⚠️"Come on (autistic child's name) it'll be fun!"
Please don't tell him what is or isn't fun. What is fun for neurotypical children isn't necessarily for mine. It's more often a sensory hell full of unpredictability. I wish people, in particular schools, understood and respected this more 😟

That'll do I guess 🤭 But there is SO much more! Ultimately, you don't have to agree with or believe any of this. Autistic people don't need your blessing for their struggles to be valid or worthy of support. Sadly, this world teaches autistic people to mask their needs. So please remember that just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it's not there.
