I'm a professional artist and run my own gallery in Folkestone. I use this page to keep people updated with latest work, news and events.
Clive came to say hi at the gallery 😀
Latest. The Leas at Dusk. Oil on Canvas 20" x 30" I really focused on the colours in this painting. I hope you are having a wonderful summer x
This was my climate action event on Sunday with Folkestone Climate Carnival during which I paint a 6' x 4' painting of the Leas and then... paint over it. So watch until after the halfway mark to see the twist. The whole event took two hours and is inspired by the way the Leas was unusually scorched by dry weather a few years ago. A big thank you to my 11-year-old son Floyd for filming!
This is Clive. Portrait number four in my series of the local homeless. Once I have completed six I will hold an exhibition at the Rainbow Centre, providers of support to the homeless in Folkestone. Oil on Canvas 22" x 32"
This Sunday I will be painting for the planet live on the Leas! I will be supporting Folkestone Climate Carnival and the painting may well get auctioned at the end to raise funds for the climate action group. Please please please come along! I am aiming to paint a 6' x 4' painting in two hours, starting at 12pm. I will be somewhere between the Leas Bandstand and the Metropole. See you there!! X
Sunday's Sandcastle event was the best so far!!! Thank you to everyone, especially those who took part! xx
Latest video. More than anything I wanted to express love for nature, and that, I suppose, I feel it deserves our protection. Much love x
Latest. This is at the entrance of Reinden Woods in Hawkinge (just outside of Folkestone). It is earlier in spring, not all the leaves are out yet. The speed restriction hints at ecology and is purposely symbolic: we don't need to travel far at high speeds to enjoy nature. It is around us.
Oil on Canvas 24" x 32"
It's time to put the date in your diary for the annual Folkestone Sandcastle Competition! Actor Steve Meo (currently starring in the West End production of Fawlty Towers) will be judging, and as always lots of great prizes. All proceeds go to the Church Street Project - a local creative therapy and counselling service for families in the area that has helped hundreds of families over the last 20 years (I'm a trustee and fundraiser). Sunday 14th July, 10am start, judging at 1pm. No need to register beforehand - turn up on the day with your team. See you there!!
PS A HUGE thanks to my 9-year-old son Miles for doing this wonderful poster! I have already booked him for next year. Well done Miles!!
PPS Please share!!
Conservative MP for Folkestone just came canvassing into my studio. I showed him this painting and suggested he use it as his profile pic
This morning's demonstration at Holywell Primary School which is located near the Thames estuary. Each of the school's classrooms is named after the historic Thames barges which I made the subject of today's work. I've made this new style of video for the demonstration instead of the timelapse which I hope you prefer??
New style of video rather than a timelapse - what do you think? Much love x
My most recent demonstration at Lighthouse on The Marsh in New Romney. The Lighthouse on the Marsh is a fantastic charity providing care, assistance and services to young people in the area. The 2.5m painting was completed in only around 90 minutes and is of Romney Marsh. I was really pleased with this!
In March last year I was helping my dear sister Julie move house in Folkestone and she gave me these two jars. It was the last time I ever saw her. Four days later she died suddenly and unexpectedly due to an undiagnosed heart condition. I decided to fill the jars with daffodils every spring to remind me of her. And this year I decided to paint them. This one is dedicated to you Julie. Oil on canvas 22” x 30”
This evening I am on Andi Oliver's show! It's the Folkestone episode this eve on BBC2 at 8pm. I'm asked to paint a painting for her multicultural festival held at the bandstand and had very little time to complete it!!
This morning's painting demonstration at Priory Fields Primary School in Dover. Two hours of answering questions about my life as an artist (including some random questions of course!! 😂) while painting this 2.5m painting of Dover Cliffs in emulsion using only the colours pictures. Loved it!! 😊
Latest painting. The Parade Steps, Folkestone. I hope this painting speaks for itself... and speaks to you. For me, it's optimism in adversity. Oil on Canvas 22" x 30" As always, thanks for your interest and much love SR
Latest. Thought I'd have a little break from portraiture. I was attracted to the peace and solitude of this subject. Folkestone Harbour Arm following some rain. Oil on Canvas 22" x 30" (56cm x 76cm). Original painting available as are prints in all sizes and formats 😀
This is Karen. She often sits in The Old High Street just down the street from my studio. Painting III in my series of the local homeless. Oil on Canvas 30" x 40". My sincere thanks goes to Karen (and my other subjects Rob and Raheem) for agreeing to my painting them.
Raheem's painting is in this week's Big Issue, out today! If you are near Costa Coffee in Folkestone do consider purchasing a copy from him, just £4 X
Thanks to all your likes and shares, The Big Issue has been in touch and this article went live on its website earlier today. As you can see the article quotes many of your comments from my previous post below! The article is to be published in a forthcoming issue of the actual magazine in early February which you can purchase from Raheem or indeed any Big Issue vendor! Big love to you all X
Stunning portrait of our vendor 'shows the power of art' to tackle homelessness Shane Record’s remarkable art of Folkestone Big Issue vendor Raheem Ahmed is aiming to put homelessness in the spotlight.
This is Raheem (although often known by his surname Ahmed). He often sits outside/near Costa in Folkestone town centre selling The Big Issue and is one of the sweetest gentlemen I know. Painting II of my series of the people on our streets. Like many homeless people health issues are common and Raheem had a heart attack towards the end of last year. Oil on Canvas 24" x 36" As always, thanks for your interest and much love x
This is Rob. He’s a local homeless chap who I stop and chat to quite often. He is a big reader, and you will often see him reading a book on Sandgate Road. His mobility is compromised as he had a stroke in early 2023. This is the first painting in a series I plan to do over the coming months and I shall be working alongside the Rainbow Centre, local providers of support and hope to those experiencing deprivation and hardship. I'm hoping to hold an exhibition in 2024 to raise awareness of the growing issue of homelessness and of course to raise funds. Oil on Canvas 26” x 40” (66cm x 102cm).
If you would like to donate funds or supplies, volunteer or are a landlord and would like to discuss potential use of a property please contact Rainbow Centre manager [email protected] 01303 850733.
My 2024 Calendars have arrived! They are available at my gallery as well as via my website. Featuring all the paintings I have done over the past year. A4 £12 A3 £18. Fab print quality as always. To purchase click the link below 😀 :

Latest. Following those beautiful autumnal sunsets we've had recently. I wanted to focus on warmth - that warmth we feel when bathed in light sometimes. Oil on Canvas 20" x 28" Much love x
This morning’s demonstration in front of sixth formers of all subjects at school. The school is located right next to the Leas in Folkestone so I thought this subject apt. It took a couple of hours and I was answering questions throughout. Was so much fun!! I used normal household emulsion and only white, black, red, yellow and blue. If you would like me to do something similar get in touch 😀
The Lower Leas, Folkestone. Oil on canvas 22" x 30" The early evening sunlight has been making this place particularly dramatic recently.
Yesterday's demonstration and charity auction for The Sports Trust, a fantastic local charity promoting and facilitating the uptake of sport in our communities. I painted this 3' x 4' painting in 90 minutes and it was so hot the paint was drying as I was applying it! It is of the Horse's Head, a popular local landmark in Folkestone's Warren. The painting raised £540 at the live auction
I recently went into Abbey Lodge Residential Home in Seabrook. I decided to paint the residents a painting free-of-charge which would remind them of where they live and could be displayed in their care home. An art student on work experience (Charlotte Proctor) organised my visit and made this video and I think she has done a brilliant job. Please have a look - It's one of the videos I'm the most proud of. What I found particularly moving was the way in which - after a while - the residents began to engage as their memories were stirred. (Please excuse my loud voice - many of the residents were hard of hearing.)
Just completed this. Any suggestions for a title??
Oil on Canvas 22" x 30" (56cm x 76cm). Painted with a palette knife, this work was a real test of patience. I LOVE our seagulls so wanted them to be the main subject. Happy weekend to you all. SR
