Clyde Ground Investigation Ltd
Ground investigation and land drilling contractor based in Central Scotland. Experts in Ground Investigation based in Central Scotland
Recently we carried out a mineshaft investigation for The Coal Authority in North Lanarkshire. Our works conisisted of a two phased approach. First we carried out a series vertical and angled dynamic sampling and rotary cored boreholes from outwith the influence zone to firm up the historic data we had on ground conditions. This allowed us to design and implement this impressive temporary works which was designed by Scaftec Ltd and built by Clyde Scaffolding Ltd. Access restrictions prohibited the use of a traditional Bailey bridge.
The second phase involved an 80m rotary probe hole to the base of the shaft and afterwards we installed a series of dywidag bars which allowed Restek UK Limited to treat the shaft with chemical grout to stabilise it. It’s been great working alongside the guys at Restek and seeing the great work they do. We look forward to the next project coming up in the near future.

Some work carried out by our rotary crews in recent weeks. We’ve had a mix of mineral boreholes, rock proving by coring for pile design and dynamic sampling in fuel stations. Another example of the wide variety of work our crews can undertake to meet the requirements of our Clients.

A small project we carried out for a new Client in Perthshire recently. Works involved 3 hand dug inspections pits to find the location of an electric cable prior to completing 3 soakaway tests in the adjacent field.
Prior to works commencing, traffic management in the form of temporary lights, reduced speed limit and a single lane closure was set up to provide safe access for our staff. It is essential for us when working on carriageways that a proper traffic management system is in place to provide protection to our staff. Thanks to Contraflow Ltd. for providing this and helping the job run smoothly.

A long overdue post from several jobs we have carried out for various Clients on the Scottish Islands this year. We have covered Coll and Tiree then Arran and Islay twice. Here we carried out a mix of dynamic sampling, soakaways and trial pits for future developments.
It's safe to say the team enjoyed the trips to the distilleries and beaches more than the work.

We’ve been back on the railway the last couple of weekends carrying out dynamic sampling boreholes. Here we have pictures of Clyde GI working on the Clyde at Bowling Harbour. We undertook a single borehole to assist with the design of a new retaining wall.

We’ve recently added a Comacchio GEO 305 to our rig fleet. This will allow us to increase our rotary capacity to keep up with Client demand. With the added power it gives us a bit of reassurance on deeper boreholes.
Here we have it in action on its first job, working alongside our Dando 3000 we completed CP to 35m followed on by rotary open hole to 50m to check for mine workings.

Well, that’s another year at Clyde GI coming to an end.
Thanks to everyone who has supported us over the last year. We’ve had another great year and this wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our staff, clients, suppliers and subcontractors.
We have a busy start to 2024 and it looks like it’s going to be another busy year.
From all at Clyde Ground Investigation, we wish you and your families the best for 2024.

Great few days in Italy last week visiting Comacchio SpA to see the latest edition to our fleet, the GEO 205 rotary rig. This impressive machine will allow us to increase our rotary capacity and improve reliability and results to our Clients.
Thank you to Nathan Jones of JKS Boyles UK Ltd for the trip and to Davide Pegoraro of Comacchio SpA for his hospitality over the few days. It was great to see the work that goes into building these machines, in a very impressive factory by a passionate workforce.

This week I had the pleasure of welcoming my old pal Ronnie Britton to the team at Clyde GI. With over 40 years in the game, he will be an invaluable asset to the team. Ronnie will be leading our rotary crew as we continue to expand our services.

Here is the latest addition to our fleet, the Beretta T25, carrying out a series of shallow rotary open hole boreholes in Millerhill last week to allow continuous gas monitoring wells to be installed. The glacial till in this area is notoriously difficult to drill using traditional cable percussive methods, so we opted for rotary open hole drilling which proved successful and achieved the depths required by our valued Client GGS Scotland.
If you have any requirements for rotary drilling on your upcoming projects, please get in touch. [email protected]

Our CP crew finishing off the week with a 10m hole drilled in 8” to allow installation of a 6” diameter water monitoring well. Thanks to Ryan at Drilling Supplies UK for the quick turnaround on the 6” plastic well casing and ensuring we kept our current work schedule on track.

We recently completed a ground investigation beneath the iconic Kingston Bridge in Glasgow. Our works consisted of a mixture of CP and WS boreholes to between depths of 5 and 10 metres, to assess the ground gas risk on the site for a development of blocks of flats.

The past weekend was a busy one for our team. From Ayr to Aberdeen we had it covered with CP, tracked WS and modular WS drilling. This was the first outing for our modular WS rig and was utilised where the access was restricted and not suitable for the conventional tracked rig. We managed to provide our Client with the information they required after failed attempts with previous methods.

An example of some recent diamond coring work we carried out as part of a retaining wall investigation in Glasgow. Windowless sampling boreholes, diamond cores and foundation pits were carried out to provide our Client with as much information as possible on the existing structure.
We can carry out diamond coring in a range of diameters from 50mm to 350mm. Please get in touch if this service can be of use on your next site.

Well, that’s the last borehole of 2022 done and dusted last night. Time for the team to put their feet up and take a well deserved break over the holidays.
Thanks to everyone who has supported us over the last year. We’ve seen significant growth since 2021 and this wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our staff, clients, suppliers and subcontractors.
We have a busy start to 2023 and it looks like it’s going to be another busy year.
From all at Clyde Ground Investigation, we wish you all a merry Christmas and all the best for 2023 🎅🏻 🎄

Our young model Angus looking happy with his work on a recent job on the Isle of Eriskay, near South Uist. We carried out a series of probe holes for rockhead profiling to inform the pile design of the new pier that’s being upgraded after serving the island for 50 years.

This weekend we completed a series of dynamic sampling on probing boreholes to 8 metres during a blockade at Carstairs Junction. The 2 shifts were long but the free breakfast put on by Network Rail was very welcome on Sunday morning. A nice touch looking after their workers.

A nice little restricted access job we completed yesterday for a potential new build in East Dunbartonshire. Our Client was told they would require trial pits across the site, but realistically, how would you get an excavator capable of achieving suitable depths to some of these positions? We offered an alternative solution which was cheaper, created less mess and gave better quality of data to our Client.

Today marks a year since we started trading. From starting as a Freelance Engineer to now operating 2 rigs and a team of 5.
It’s been a quick and busy year and definitely no regrets! We would like to thank all our customers for the continued support they have given us and we look forward to continuing to work with you over the year ahead.
Big thanks to a good friend, Ross Cameron, for his help when we started up and putting work our way to get us up and running.

Merry Christmas to us 🎁 We recently collected our new Premier 110 Compact dynamic sampling rig which was 6 months in the making. We look forward to next year, where it will be deployed on a recently secured rail project in the first half of the year. It’s a great piece of kit and we are looking forward to putting it to work in what is shaping up to be a busy start to the year.
