Financial wellbeing
It is more important than ever that we look after ourselves both mentally and physically, to ensure that we are living a long and prosperous life.
Financial well-being is a term that applies to everyone. It is about feeling secure and in control of your finances both now and in the future. Consider your future, in terms of work, health and caring responsibilities will help prepare a future financial plan.
Money worries are not just about income and debt, it can be caused by a wide range of situations and factors. With some of the biggest financial challenges we face, occurring just once or twice in a lifetime, we do not always have the skills or experience to navigate through them on our own.
A few things we can all do to help our financial well-being.
• Financial health check with a regulated Financial Planner
• Downsize debt
• Use tax allowances
• Retirement plans
• Make a Will

The universal nature of financial worries Financial stress can affect anyone – for any number of reasons. It’s important to talk about financial wellbeing and take advantage of the support available.
Self Employed? Are you planning for your future?
I know a few of my followers are self-employed and through setting up my own business, I can fully understand the hard work and time that goes in to making it a success – and consequently, I can understand why retirement planning may fall to the bottom of your to do list.
Being self-employed means that the responsibility of sorting out your pension and future savings is left down to you. As such an important component to your future, this needs to be well researched and well invested to help provide you with the necessary reassurance.

How the self-employed can work towards a bright financial future With an uncertain income and no employer pension contributions, self-employment can make it hard to plan for retirement. But the flexibility it offers has advantages, too.
£20 BILLION.
This is the estimated figure of either lost or dormant pension pots within the UK alone. Years ago, it was common for people to leave school, start work, and remain with that employer until retirement, when they would collect their pension.
In today’s working climate, the average person will likely have six plus jobs during their working career. Which, when looking back forty years upon retirement age, you can see how easy it can be to forget where you were employed or who your pension was with.
By consolidating your pensions as you move from one job to the next, throughout your working lifetime, can have several benefits. It will allow you to keep track of and manage your savings more easily, as well as generating more investment opportunities to your current fund. This could lead to better growth in the future.
Questions to ask yourself: -
• Have I got several pension pots with different companies?
• Do I know where they are located?
• What do I know about them – how they are invested?

Understanding inflation As prices creep up after COVID-19 lockdowns, how should investors think about it?
Dealing with life insurance and pensions is the kind of worthy-but-unpleasant task we always intend to do but somehow keep postponing.
In this article, Economist, Tim Harford, explains why we tend to over-insure small risks – and under-protect ourselves against big ones.
We often don’t fully understand the true purpose protection serves for us or realise how the importance our health and well being impacts us financially throughout our lifetimes.
For me this is a really interesting read, this topic is often discarded as we all think nothing bad will ever happen to us. Think of everything you pay for, car and car insurance, pets and pet insurance, home and home insurance. The list goes on.
Now why is it that we don’t see protecting ourselves as a priority? How would we pay for any of the above if for example, our income stream was to stop?
https://www.sjp.co.uk/news/the-psychology-of-risk
The psychology of risk The Undercover Economist, Tim Harford, explains why we tend to over-insure small risks – and under-protect ourselves against big ones
UK inflation more than doubles to 1.5% in April, from 0.7% in March - a headline that many of us may have missed. But what does it mean?
By not planning effectively, inflation could cause your pot of hard-earned cash to shrink. Not factoring inflation in when deciding where to put your money, whether it’s savings account or investing, you could see your pot decrease over the years.
Inflation can go up and down, but if, for example, inflation was at 2%, this means the prices of key goods that households need to buy, such as food, fuel and clothing, would be rising at a rate of 2% a year.
So, in this scenario, if your savings weren't earning at least 2% a year, the effect of inflation would mean your money would buy less in a year’s time. For example, if you put £100 into a bank account paying 1% interest, you would have £101 after 12 months. But, 2% inflation means that the things that cost you £100 when you put your money in your account will cost you £102 a year later – so your money has lost purchasing power.
So, what can we do to protect against this?
There are a number of different investment options out there in the market. For anyone new to the investment world, it can be daunting as some risk may need to be taken. But, it is fair to say that leaving money in cash carries an element of risk. The good news is there are many ways you can mitigate this, from choosing low-risk investments to spreading your cash across a number of asset classes and geographic regions.
Just over a year ago the whole of the UK was put into a national lockdown, almost as if a pause button had been put on our lives.
Fast forward to today, we are starting to see restrictions lifted, with a provisional end date in sight.
This article looks into how COVID has impacted our personal goals and ambitions, helping us to realise what is most important to us, as well as teaching us what financial discipline can do for our futures.
