Brand system for Voiceover as part of our Brand for Growth 2024 programme.

Brand for Growth is a yearly programme that provides fully funded rebrands to social enterprises that would significantly benefit from a new visual identity but lack the resources to finance it themselves. It has been successfully running since 2019.

Tailored for high-growth enterprises, the programme is funded by Bold Studio’s profits, the Scottish Government and a variety of private sponsors committed to the sector.

Voiceover is a not for profit social enterprise founded by the Govan Community Project in 2011. They promote equality of access to services by providing high-quality, affordable interpreting and translation services.

As part of our Brand for Growth 2024 programme we developed a comprehensive brand system for Voiceover, designed to support their future objectives and empower greater community engagement. This new brand system, that takes inspiration from the stories of translators and clients alike, represents the organisation in a welcoming, modern, and positive way. By incorporating hand-drawn and overlayed shapes, image borders and textures, and a vibrant colour palette, we have crafted an identity that conveys an independent and diverse spirit for the Voiceover, who were a pleasure to work with.

Design outputs for The Plan 24-30.

Challenges

The project’s ambition was evident, with a brand style, website, and comprehensive report—complete with icons and illustrations—created within just six weeks. The primary challenge lay in crafting a compelling brand identity that effectively communicates key information to officials, journalists, and public sector bodies. This involved integrating complex data and informational charts to clearly explain the project’s roadmap and methodology. Additionally, the task required developing a brand that not only captured but also exceeded the professionalism of the original project, “The Promise.”

Solution

To address these challenges, a compelling brand style was developed using clean and accessible graphical elements and icons to maximize information communication. Illustrations and a bright, modern color palette were incorporated to add warmth and heart. The solution involved designing an extensive suite of over 80 icons representing various sectors and actions, crafting illustrations for each foundational element, and establishing a cohesive visual identity. This new brand aesthetic was meticulously applied across a new website, informational documents, and other collateral to ensure a polished and consistent presentation.

Illustration set for The Plan 24-30 from the talented .peat

One of the main challenges of this project was to convey dense information in a clear, understandable and professional way without loosing sight of the children who are at the centre of project.

The illustrations aimed to inject warmth and be a constant reminder that children are at the heart of every decision set out in the promise.

At Scottish parliament tonight to celebrate 30 years of Planning Aid Scotland. We went through a rebrand with this organisation last year. They were a joy to work with and the brief came through loud and clear. We need (and deserve) to be seen as relevant, knowledge/technical and approachable. The compliments were flying and everyone on attendance seemed to appreciate the turning of a brand corner. We were mentioned by name by Sarah Boyak MSP, Ivan McKee MSP, John Bury (chair of Pas) and more. The fact the we are up for a Scottish design award with it was also a strong talking point.

Planning Aid Scotland - Brand Identity

We equipped Planning Aid Scotland with a brand system that will support them to achieve their aspirations for the future, empowering more people to engage with the topics and decisions that affect their lives by representing the organisation as welcoming, modern and positive. We also created a special mark and numerical typeface to mark the organisation’s 30th year.

Branding for The Boardwalk in Glasgow. The brand was rolled out across signage, design for print and social media. We developed a new contemporary and easy to use website with an accessible booking system to help the client thrive and become a recoginsible venure hire space in the heart of Glasgow

Brand system for The Boardwalk continued…

Crafting designs that echo the distinctive paneling found within the architecture of our studio, we infuse vibrant, contemporary colors into the brand system. This infusion embodies the accessibility, diversity, and dynamism inherent in the artistic expressions hosted within The Boardwalk’s walls.

Featuring a spectrum of adaptable spaces, including a 180-capacity theater and seven studios, the venue provides an ideal backdrop for an array of engagements. From corporate gatherings and conferences to dance rehearsals, creative workshops, and riveting performances, our multifaceted environments accommodate gatherings ranging from intimate groups of ten to large assemblies of 180, ensuring adaptability and comfort for every occasion.

The Boardwalk is a new venue hire space in Glasgow established by Impact Arts, a charity transforming lives through art and creativity and tackling inequality with creative engagement.

We began by facilitating a naming workshop, revealing the building’s local reputation as a safe oasis in the city. Combined with inspiration found in the wooden walkway outside the building, we established the name The Boardwalk and developed a dynamic brand system to reflect the initial concept.

The project is aimed at corporate organisations as well as art, theatre and dance groups, using a pay it forward model to allow the latter to afford professional studio spaces whilst providing a unique, mission-led venue for companies outside of the arts.

Impact Arts required a name and brand identity for the site that would set it apart from the main charity and attract corporate companies, charities and arts professionals. The brand was to be rolled out to a corresponding website and accessible booking system.
This process ensured the brand we established was relevant to the local creative community as well as the most recognisable elements of the building. By doing so, we could speak to corporate businesses who regularly pass through the Merchant City and recognise the building, as well as remaining loyal to the bustling arts community that are familiar with Impact Arts.

Branding for One World Shop in Edinburgh.

Eco, Vegan and Fair Trade products.

Photos from Bold Studio's post 18/04/2024

A throw back to one of our favourite Brand for Growths - One World Shop, Edinburgh.

One World Shop is a well established fair trade shop based in Edinburgh. The items range from gifts, body products (zero waste), household items, food, coffee, toys, books, clothing and jewelry. The shop has something for everyone and is a great place to buy gifts, mementos and ethical everyday items.

They support producers from social enterprises, NGO’s, small-scale farms and workshops in the global south by providing a market for their goods. Over the years their sales have enabled 1000’s of producers to get out of poverty and given support to their families and communities. With the addition of the Fairtrade social premium from the sale of each Fairtrade marked product, many community benefits such as schools, wells and roads have been built in disadvantaged areas of the global south.

We helped One World Shop identify who their target customers are and who their compeition is on the high street.

There was a desire to move away from the old and somewhat cliched aesthetics of fair trade products and modernise the look and feel. We provided a vibrant and contemporary brand system along with messaging that would appeal to socially conscious shoppers who want ethical products that are also of high quality and on trend style.

Check out their online shop or visit them on Lothian road

The latest in our animal welfare series. Here's look at the branding for Seas of Change, a conference in Greece this week. It's the inaugural conference by our clients in Long Island - future conferences will be in other industrial fish farming hotspots, bringing policy makers and campaigners together to understand the issues around industrial scale fish farming and to press for action.

More work for the Seas of Change summit.

The summit is co-sponsored by the Rauch Foundation (US), Katheti (Greece), and Global Salmon Farming Resistance (Argentina) under the auspices of the Municipality of Poros and the Panhellenic Alliance for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Aquaculture. Saronic Magazine is a media sponsor of the event.

Bold Studio built a mockup pig farrowing crate and installed in the Scottish Parliament.

We’ve been working on a campaign with OneKind to end the practice of keeping new-mum pigs in farrowing crates where they can’t move or turn around for five weeks and crucially can’t engage in their natural behaviour of nesting. A bill is coming up in parliament and we need to raise awareness of the issue among MSPs to get the issue tabled in that bill.

We needed to grab attention long enough to explain the slightly complex issue. A replica pig crate would certainly do that. But with the lines taped out on the floor the crate felt quite well... big (to a human). Farmed pigs are a lot bigger than many people imagine so we added Mabel the Large White to scale.

MSP and associates have the opportunity to step inside the crate (and stay for 5 weeks if they want!) to experience it from the sow’s point of view - and hopefully be inspired to share photos to highlight the issue. Pictures is Scottish Green Party MSP, Mike Ruskell.

We love working on campaign that change attitudes and discovering creative approaches to win hearts and minds. Our work with OneKind is very close to our hearts.

Unbound the Greyhound - Campaign Success! 🎉

The campaign animation has been nominated for this year's Smiley Charity film Awards.

Please take the time to vote for the film - Link in bio
..

Following its launch on the 7th of June, the campaign has exceeded its target and reached 20,300 signatories. OneKind have been invited to host in-store events in Lush Glasgow and Edinburgh and Doc Martens in Glasgow have been handing out our scratchcards, gaining traction on the ground in city centres Scotland wide.

The call to end dog racing in Scotland was projected on to the side of Shawfield Stadium, the Greyhound Board of Great Britain’s previous track during ‘Greyhound Week’ - an event celebrating the supposed excitement and joy to be found in dog-racing. The animations were also projected on to major buildings in Glasgow and Edinburgh. This alongside traditional press and out of home advertising has helped reach a larger audience.

Unbound the Greyhound had significant impact worldwide, shared by accounts in Canada, Germany, several U.S states, Japan, France and Australia. The international reach acquired by the digital elements allowed the campaign to expand exponentially and OneKind were invited to speak at the Greyhounds Around the Globe conference.

The campaign’s success has been supported by celebrity endorsements from Chris Packham and Megan McCubbin, whose animation post was viewed 19k times. Ricky Gervais reposted the campaign and it became OneKind’s top tweet of all time!
