Leatherette is a synthetic material designed to mimic real leather. Itβs also known as fake leather, faux leather, pleather, and synthetic leather. There are many examples of artificial leather that do not contain plastics with examples including materials such as pineapple and eucalyptus leaves or cork and rice.
Leatherette has another benefit besides a positive impact on the environment- it is often cheaper.
When purchasing garments from fake leather, make sure to pay attention to the labels. If the clothes are labelled as PU-coated leather, that means a plastic product has been used.
