📲Hackers are impersonating well-known cybersecurity companies, such as CrowdStrike, in callback phishing emails to gain initial access to corporate networks.

📲Most phishing scams are done through links to steal user login details.

📲However, more recently, hackers have turned to "callback" phishing campaigns that impersonate well-known companies requesting you call a number to resolve a problem, cancel a subscription renewal, or discuss another issue.

📲Make sure to remind those close to you who may not be as aware of these scams to be more vigilant with those contacting them.

Screen-sharing scams on the rise, watchdog warns 14/06/2022

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) is warning people to beware of people posing as investment advisers and offering to help them set up new schemes via online meeting platforms.

Scammers ask their victim to share the screen and enable remote access - which hands over control of their device and, potentially their bank account.

About 2,100 cases have been reported to the FCA since July 2020 and more than ÂŁ25m was stolen in the 15 months from January 2021.

Online passwords: Get rid of them 'altogether' in a bid to foil hackers, says cyber security expert 17/05/2022

People and businesses should drop passwords altogether and move to other technology to protect personal information from hackers, according to cybersecurity expert Grahame Williams.

He called on the industry to move to other forms of login such as multi-factor authentication (MFA) or biometrics like face and fingerprint scans to improve the general safety of personal data.

Mr Williams said a key issue was the widespread use of simple and easy-to-guess passwords. Recent research suggests that the number of CEOs still using '12356' as their password is almost comical. Not only are their passwords easy to guess, but they're also used across multiple platforms, giving potential hackers even greater access to valuable data.

UK cybersecurity unit tackles record number of online scams in 2021 13/05/2022

Britain’s cybersecurity unit has reported a record crackdown on internet scams after tackling more than 2.7m attempted frauds last year, a near-fourfold increase on the figure for 2020.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), an arm of the GCHQ spy agency, said the interrupted scams included fake celebrity endorsements and bogus extortion emails. It stressed, however, that the increase in detection reflected aggressive targeting by the unit rather than an increase in scams.

Lindy Cameron, the NCSC’s chief executive, said one foiled scam involved a fraudster attempting to impersonate her. “We know that scammers will go to great lengths, and indeed my name has been used to try to trick people, but as we continue to expand our defences we can see the tangible impact this is having,” she said.

Elon Musk’s Twitter Buy Exposes a Privacy Minefield 28/04/2022

On Monday Elon Musk secured an agreement to buy Twitter for $44 billion and take the company private. In his initial comments about the move, Musk discussed a range of goals from “making the algorithms open source to increase trust” to addressing spambots and “authenticating all humans.”

There isn't more information available yet on how Musk will steer Twitter, but privacy and security proponents say that these initial comments paint a mixed picture of where the social media giant could be headed under its new leadership—and reveal the risks of trusting platforms to protect our private information.

Microsoft confirms they were hacked by Lapsus$ extortion group 23/03/2022

Microsoft has confirmed that one of their employees was compromised by the Lapsus$ hacking group, allowing the threat actors to access and steal portions of their source code.

Last night, the Lapsus$ gang released 37GB of source code stolen from Microsoft's Azure DevOps server. The source code is for various internal Microsoft projects, including for Bing, Cortana, and Bing Maps.

"No customer code or data was involved in the observed activities. Our investigation has found a single account had been compromised, granting limited access. Our cybersecurity response teams quickly engaged to remediate the compromised account and prevent further activity," explained Microsoft in an advisory about the Lapsus$ threat actors.

Germany warns against Russian anti-virus use 16/03/2022

Germany's cyber-security authority has warned against using anti-virus software from Russian headquartered company Kaspersky. The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) issued the statement in light of the conflict in Ukraine.

Russian information-technology businesses could be spied on or forced to launch cyber-attacks, it said. Kaspersky told BBC News the warning had been "made on political grounds" and it had no ties to the Russian government.

How the tech community has rallied to Ukraine’s cyber-defence | Joyce Hakmeh and Esther Naylor 08/03/2022

Over the past decade, Ukraine has experienced many major cyber-attacks at the hands of Russia, from election interference in 2014 to a fully remote cyber-attack on a power grid in 2015, resulting in countrywide power outages. As the conflict in Ukraine escalates, expert cyber-watchers have been speculating about the kind of cyber-attacks that Russia might conduct.

Responding to cyber-attacks and building national cyber resilience has never been the sole responsibility of governments. It requires a society-wide approach grounded in international cooperation efforts. For the first time since its inception, the EU rapid cyber response team, with capabilities to detect and respond to a variety of threats, was deployed to help defend against cyber-attacks targeting Ukraine.

Ukraine warns of cyberattacks on banks and state agencies 22/02/2022

Ukrainian authorities said they had seen online warnings that hackers were preparing to launch major attacks on government agencies, banks and the defence sector. The country has suffered a string of cyberattacks in recent weeks which Kyiv has blamed on Russia.

The online attacks, and warnings that there will be more, come as Western countries accuse Russia of planning an invasion of neighbouring Ukraine. Moscow denies any involvement in the hacking but has demanded security guarantees including a promise that Ukraine would never join NATO.

Out-of-Control Cybercrime Will Cause More Real-World Harm 10/02/2022

Cyber incidents will cause real and sustained disruption to our everyday comforts in 2022, and maybe even result in deaths, due to well-organised, mostly Russian criminals who are increasingly out of control.

Cyber harms inflicted by bad actors have turned out to be very serious but it's mostly in boring and largely invisible ways. The closest most ordinary people come to encountering a cyber “attack” is either by losing a small amount of money or having their data stolen. There’s the odd exception—the Russian state battering Ukraine, for example—but for most people in most countries, cyber crime has not been much to get worked up about.

This will change, as cyber criminals increasingly attack in ways that cause far more hurtful and visible consequences. In the first half of 2021, the disruption to the Colonial Pipeline in the United States left two-thirds of petrol stations in South Carolina empty, which spurred panic buying and all the risk that entails. Fresh food was given away in large quantities in Sweden because supermarket tills weren’t working. Schools were hit in New Zealand and the UK. Most dangerously, health care was targeted. In May the entire Irish health service was crippled for weeks, and over the spring and summer dozens of hospitals in Europe and the US found themselves locked out of life-critical systems by ransomware attacks.

In June, cyberattacks were on the agenda at the annual meeting of G7 countries in Cornwall, and many in the cybersecurity industry hoped that this, combined with Joe Biden confronting Vladimir Putin for harbouring the criminals on Russian soil, would turn the tide. This is unlikely to happen, however, since we still have almost no way of punishing cyber criminals.

Out-of-Control Cybercrime Will Cause More Real-World Harm Ransomware and online attacks can cause deadly real-world harm. Governments need to raise their game in response.
