REMEMBRANCE DAY AT HUGHENDEN SATURDAY NOVEMBER 11 2023
A short service was held in the Sports Club Bar at Hughenden on Saturday morning November 11 to commemorate Armistice Day.
Before a smallish group of members and four guests from Hillhead High School, Head Mrs Karen McAlaney, Mr Tom Carson SMT, and Head Prefects, Carl Haas and Pearl Smith-Stewart, James Lindley -Dawe ( pictured) explained the history of the opening of the War Memorial Grounds and its Clubhouse along with the WW1 and later WW2 Memorial panels.
Two poems were recited - â My Boy Jackâ by Rudyard Kipling and â To AHJâ by Violet Jacob- respectively by James Lindley-Dawe and Bernie Mitchell.
The traditions of the Last Post, the Silence and Reveille were also observed.
James Lindley- Dawe is more usually seen at Hugheden in his cricketing whites in his role as the 1st XI wicketkeeper. Here for the service he wore the uniform of an Able Seaman in the RNR. In the image he is displaying the wreath provided by HMS Dalriada

Many will know that Hughenden was purchased to create a lasting memorial to those former pupils and staff of Hillhead High School who never came home from the horrors of World War 1, and we are honoured to be the custodians currently entrusted with its care.
We are approaching this yearâs Remembrance Day and on Saturday 11th November we shall be having a small memorial service in the Sports Club remembering those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
We thus warmly invite HSC members and members of the community to attend our small service on Saturday, November 11th upstairs in the sports bar where the Hillhead High School memorial tablets are located.
The service will begin at 10.45 a.m. sharp.

RWC FINAL - SATURDAY OCTOBER 28
Cafe Source Too West End
Hillhead Cricket Club are holding their annual Craik Cup Dinner on Friday 3rd November. This event has been running for many years in honour of James Fraser Craik, a former Hillhead High School pupil who was decorated for his service in World War 2. He was tragically shot down in Saxony in 1945 in his 77th operational flight. In his memory, in 1946, the Craik family presented Hillhead Cricket Club with the Craik Cups. These Cups are awarded in his honour and memory to the Player and Young Player of the Year at the Hillhead Cricket Club Annual Dinner. The event has been an ever-present fixture in the Hillhead Cricket Club calendar since 1946.
We are looking for donations of raffle prizes to raise vital funds for the club. If you are willing to donate a prize, then we will promote your business through our social media channels. In addition, your business/company name will also be announced several times over the course of the evening. The dinner is attended by over 110 guests so a sizeable audience will see, and hear, of your generosity in supporting the local community.
If you are willing to donate, please get in touch and we can let you know the next steps. We look forward to hearing from you.
Still a few tickets available for our fantastic annual Craik Cup Dinner on Friday 3rd November at the Sports Club.
Message Richard Bond (details below) if you would like to purchase a tickets.

DISAPPOINTING SEASON END FOR HILLHEAD 1st X1 at HUGHENDEN
Hillhead 1st X1 125 for 9 ( after 50 overs ) 1 point Partick X1 126 for 4 ( after 23.3 overs ) 25 points
After all the early morningâs effort expended by ground staff and players to have the square and wicket fit for play by the appointed start time of 12.00, the outcome of the final match in 2023 was a resounding 6 wicket defeat for Hillhead. As a result, they finished 3rd in WDCU Premiership 3, their record for 2023 was Played 16 Won 11. Of these victories, 2 were recorded against Titwood who finished above Hillhead in 2nd place in the league, but hindsight reveals that, discounting the 2 losses to Partick, their inability to defeat Clubs lower in the league ultimately cost the Club dearly.
Inserted on the drying wicket, Hillhead batted gamely throughout their 50 over allocation. Although progress was slow against a very tight and well disciplined attack, the cricket was absorbing and proved a fine spectacle for the smallish group of supporters. Five of the Hillhead batters made double figures and top scorer was wicket keeper, Jim Lindley- Dawe, who displayed typical Yorkshire grit and obstinacy in compiling a hard earned 31 not out with 21 singles. Next was Cammy Horn, who, in the unusual position of opener, reigned in his natural free hitting game to grind out 23 runs. Of the others, Jack Holland and Romir More fell for 14 and 15 respectively when going well, and Rahul Sharma was undone by leg break bowler, Tony Hulatt, again for 14.
For their part, Partick wasted little time in going for what was ultimately a meagre total. After 11 overs of their reply, their openers had reached 55 for no loss; Hillhead at that stage had scored only 17 for 2 wickets down. Apart from leg spinner, Jared Bartlett, who picked up both Partick openers cheaply, but only when the Partick reply had reached 3 figures. The other 5 bowlers in the Hillhead attack each have had better days at the office. The visitors took only 23 overs to reach their target, their only blemish being 2 late run outs which spoiled their score card. The outcome of first in the table playing third resulted in a convincing victory for Partick and the Hillhead squad could have had no complaints about that. It was Hillhead 1st X1âs only league defeat at Hughenden all season
The season, which began in wintry conditions at Helensburgh on the last Saturday in April with a fine victory, petered out on the last Saturday in August with defeat in dampish but eminently playing conditions. However the Hillhead club should take heart from its being able to field 2 competitive Saturday X1âs and a Sunday development team throughout the season. Planning for season 2024 begins soon.

HILLHEAD 1st X1 TRIUMPH IN THE GARSCUBE GLOOM
Hillhead 163 all out ( 38.3 overs) 25 points Milngavie 147 all out ( 40.4 overs ) 7 points
At 20.30 in the gathering gloom at the Glasgow University estate, Hillhead took their last wicket to defeat hosts, Milngavie, by 16 runs in a very closely contested game. Milngavie looked in control of the outcome for most of their reply to Hillheadâs 163 in reaching 125 for 5 in the 29th over of the game, reduced to 41 overs/side due to rain delays. But then the visitors rallied due to 2 wickets in 2 balls from both strike bowler, Gavin Lynch, and first change, Keshav Soni. The former recovered well from a very poor first spell to exert control in his second run to put the brake on the Milngavie victory attempt. His first wicket came from a superb catch on the long leg boundary courtesy of âRomiâ More , while his second was a pouch behind from wicket keeper, James Lindley-Dawe, who had 4 scorebook victims, but had no luck with his 5th appeal. Keshavâs wickets came in tight 8 over spell where he took 3 for 25.
The fact Hillhead rallied well in a game they might have lost was down to the cricket nous of Captain, Jack Holland, who managed his bowling resources expertly and set an enviable example in his fielding skills. Earlier, he had already led from the front with his batting, compiling a well constructed 60, when the next highest contributor was âextrasâ with 30. However, both Ganesh Ardarkar and Sneehan Das also batted well for their 20 and 23 respectively, but both will have been disappointed that they failed to build on their promising starts.
Another 25 points from this victory finds Hillhead still in a with a chance of promotion from WDCU Premiership 3 but to achieve that, they will require to defeat the strong Partick X1 in the final league game of the season on Saturday August 27 at Hughenden, 12.00 start.
ALL spectators and friends will be made very welcome at this game. The 1st X1 are worthy of your support.
