The Tall Ship Glenlee
Built in 1896 the former merchant sailing vessel will be 128 years old this year.
The mission of the Clyde Maritime Trust is to care for the Glenlee and share the history of ships built on the Clyde for the benefit of all to enjoy and learn through its unique maritime heritage.
Glenlee is getting smellier by the day!
Ship museum unveils 'unique' upgrade that lets visitors control its smells Glasgow’s Tall Ship Glenlee, a museum within a 127-year-old vessel, has unveiled an upgrade that lets visitors control its smells.
A few days ago we lost Alex Anderson one of our most respected volunteers. Alex worked on Glenlee for over a decade and shared his wide-ranging expertise in electronic engineering on board the ship and in the offices and workshop of the Trust.
Alex did the vital job of carrying out half-cell checks on cathodic protection (monitoring the effective protection of the steel hull from the quayside), and restored the Spanish power distribution board, installed in 1922, at the aft of the ship, near the engine room. He helped with the ship’s IT network; researched, located and explained the position and operation of the Spanish radio system on board as well as accounting for the generator and alternators, also bought in the Spanish era.
Alex’s contribution did not stop there: he repaired electrical devices including tools, and was good at fault finding in larger equipment like diesel compressors/weld generators etc. while his other forte was speaking to various groups and societies on the story of the Glenlee, spreading the history and people of this historic vessel.
All these tasks he always accomplished with skill and great good nature, as well as a dedication to completing a task in the best possible manner for the best possible result. Alex shared and extended his own skills by explaining to others and passing on what he had learned as a professional and guide.
We remember Alex as a fine, respected volunteer and greatly missed shipmate on Glenlee and it is for him that the flag flies at half-mast.
Celebrating our heritage, embracing inclusion, and fostering diversity as we work together on Glenlee. Here’s to honoring the past and building a more inclusive future for all 💫♥️

Meet Matthew, a dedicated member of our Maintenance Crew at the Tall Ship! 🌟 Matthew loves climbing the ship’s rigging on a sunny day, making each moment enjoyable. ☀️ Outside of work, he enjoys overhearing parents making up interesting answers to their children’s questions about the ship. 🤗 One of his most memorable moments was when Ross spooked him, causing him to dump an entire cup of coffee down his front—he jumped so high he nearly hit the deck above! 😂 His favorite spot on the ship is the P**p Deck because the view of the river is fantastic. It’s a great place to take a break. 🌊 Matthew’s favorite visitor interaction was with a dad and his two enthusiastic young boys, who wanted to hang around watching him work, hoping to see him accidentally chop off a finger with his chisel. 😅 And his most embarrassing song? “Everytime We Touch” by Cascada! 🎶 Matthew’s lively spirit and enthusiasm make him a valued member of our team, bringing joy to both visitors and colleagues alike. 🌟
Day Seven: Early wetting from pulling in braces, escaping a sea spray, and laughing at drenched crewmates. 🌊 Heavy morning squall and rainwater collection with a wet ending. Setting sails late and finding another flying fish. 🐟🌧️⛵
Step aboard the Tall Ship Glenlee and uncover the vital role of the sailmaker! 🚢 A skilled sailmaker could mean the difference between a swift ship and a slow one, responsible for mending and replacing sails made from flax, cotton, or h**p. Glenlee carried 25,200 square feet of canvas! 🆘 In emergencies , sailmakers even assisted with surgery and prepared the deceased for burial at sea 🌊 The final stitch went through the nose to ensure he was dead! Explore this and more on your visit to Glenlee 💫
Meet Evan, a dedicated member of our Visitor Experience team at the Tall Ship! 🌟 Evan loves the camaraderie and joy of working with fantastic colleagues, making each day enjoyable. 🤗 Outside of work, Evan is passionate about playing football and attending as many gigs as he can. ⚽🎶 One of his most memorable moments was when he dressed as an elf for Santa's grotto, only to be told he was a rubbish elf after taking off his hat during a break! 🎅🏼😂 His favorite Halloween costume was when he and the events coordinator, Libby, became Grindah and Miche from "People Just Do Nothing." 📺👻 And his most embarrassing song? "Love Machine" by Girls Aloud, featuring Cheryl, the Geordie icon! 🎶😅 Evan's lively spirit and enthusiasm make him a valued member of our team, bringing joy to both visitors and colleagues alike. 🌟
Day Six: Early clothes washing and a surprise flying fish breakfast. 🐟 Midday birthday with greetings and a cigarette gift. Sorting sea chest and taking in sails as weather turns unsettled. 🌧️⛵
Meet Rose, our skilled member of the maintenance crew at the Tall Ship! 🌟 Rose thrives on the variety her job offers; one day she might be blacking down the rigging at the top of the main mast, and the next, pumping water out of the bilges or anything in between. Outside of work, she loves making and mending things. Her current project? Crocheting a temperature blanket that documents the highest and lowest temperatures each day of the year! 🧶✨ If Rose had a superpower, it would be to speak any language because she believes the world would be a better place if everyone understood each other better. 🌍♥️ Her most embarrassing song? “Year 3000” by Busted, though she finds everything on her playlist a bit cringy. Her favorite spot on the ship? The starboard side of the steering housing on the p**p deck, perfect for watching the river and enjoying sunsets. 🌅 She loves when people take an interest in their traditional work, like caulking or working in the rigging.
