KAJAKI DAM, INCIDENT
On this day, 6 September 2006, in what has been dubbed, "the Day of Days", a group of British Paratroopers on patrol in Helmand Province, near the Kajaki dam, found themselves trapped in a 30-year old Russian minefield.

Seven were seriously injured, 3 of whom lost legs, and one, Corporal Mark Wright, was to die of injury, after displaying such bravery that he would be posthumously awarded the George Cross.

A intense war film was made of this entitled "Kajaki" – one of the few British films to be made about this conflict.

BATTLE OF WORCESTER – "THE COURAGEOUS SCOTS"
On this day, 371 years ago, 3 September 1651, the Battle of Worcester, the last major conflict of the British Civil War was fought.

Oliver Cromwell's Parliamentarian New Model Army defeated Charles II's Royalists, of whom the majority were Scottish.

Charles had led his Royalist army out of Scotland into England, pursued south by Cromwell. Estimates of the size of the Royalist and Parliamentarian forces differ.

Although the Royalists lost, they went down in Worcestershire history with admiration and respect. So much so, that they are known as "The Courageous Scots". There is a museum at Bewdley, where it says that many of them were taken prisoner while trying to cross the River Severn at Bewdley Bridge.

The Royalist cavalry was under the command of David Leslie (who fought at Dunbar). He was captured and sent to the Tower of London. He was released on the Restoration of Charles II, and died in 1682.

ESCAPE and THE ROYAL OAK
After the Battle, Charles and a small group of supporters fled north. They journeyed to Stourbridge where the decision was made for Charles to hide out on the Boscobel Estate, further north in Shropshire, owned by Charles Gifford.

It was during his time here, disguised as a farm labourer, that he famously hid in an Oak tree along with Colonel William Carlos, to evade the Parliamentarian troops who had arrived to search the Estate.

This has since given rise to the term "The Royal Oak", the name of many pubs throughout the UK!

There is an equestrian statue to Charles II in Parliament Square, just off the Royal Mile.

THOMAS TELFORD, "MAN WHO BUILT BRITAIN" 🧱
On this day, 190 years ago, 2 Sept 1834, the creative genius, "the untiring benevolent", and "the Man who Built Britain", Thomas Telford died. Born in Eskdale, Dumfriesshire, on 9 Aug 1757, his father was a shepherd who died soon after he was born. He was raised in hard circumstances by his widowed mother.

He was apprenticed to a stone mason at age 14, and would become a civil engineer and architect; and one of Britain's Greatest road, bridge and canal builders.

He unified Britain LITERALLY, and gave to the Nation many works of "inestimable benefit".

Many of his ground-breaking constructions are still in use.

His Menai Suspension Bridge between Wales and Anglesey built in the 1820s was the longest suspension bridge of its time; the Caledonian Canal through Scotland was the greatest canal in the world until Suez was created half a century later; and St Katherine Dock in London are amongst the many roads, bridges and canals he built across the UK.

His 'Neptune's Staircase' on the Caledonian Canal is the longest staircase lock in Britain.

He designed the Dean Bridge in Edinburgh, completed in 1831. It's one of the main arterial routes into Edinburgh used by cars, buses and lorries today which speaks volumes for its design; and the Cartland bridge into Lanark was the highest road bridge at its time.

In 2007 the BBC produced a 1 hr documentary called "Thomas Telford: The Man who Built Britain". He is buried in Westminster Abbey.

There is a memorial stone seated area to him outside Westerkirk Parish Church in the village of Bentpath, Dumfries and Galloway, which states:

THE MEMORY OF THOMAS TELFORD
SON OF THE 'UNBLAMEABLE SHEPHERD' AND
TO RECORD HIS FAME AS AN ENGINEER AND HIS

IN LANGHOLM. HIS CREATIVE GENIUS GAVE TO THE NATION
MANY WORKS OF INESTIMABLE BENEFIT. HE WAS THE
FIRST PRESIDENT OF THE INSTITUTION OF CIVIL ENGINEERS.

The 1960s new town of Telford in Shropshire is named after him, where he has a statue looking out at the works which do follow him.

THE GREAT FIRE OF LONDON 🔥🔥🔥
On this day in British History, 2 September 1666, the "Great Fire of London" began in a bakery in Pudding Lane, and ended 4 days later at Pye Corner, causing massive property devastation, destroying the majority of buildings within the City wall, including the destruction of St Paul's Cathedral. Miraculously, it is said that only 6 people died.

It is believed that the cause of the fire was an accident, although rumours persisted at the time, and for some time thereafter, that it had been arson by various enemies of the State.

The Monument to the Great Fire of London is a fluted Doric column. It was built between 1671 and 1677, and stands at the junction of Monument Street and Fish Street Hill. It is located 202 feet from the origin of the fire in Pudding Lane. You can climb to the top of its…202 feet.

It used to have words inscribed which blamed a Popish Plot for the fire, but those words were "cancelled" (chiselled out) in 1830 after Catholic emancipation.

THE BATTLE OF KANDAHAR, BRITISH VICTORY
On this Day in British History, 1 September 1880, the Battle of Kandahar.
This was part of the second British-Afghan War, 1878-1880.

The British suspected Russia of trying to control Afghanistan. This posed a threat to India, and so the British Indian Army moved in to ensure Afghanistan remained a "buffer state".

On 27 July 1880, a 1,000 strong British Indian force was heavily defeated at the Battle of Maiwand (which is commemorated by the Maiwand Lion statue in Forbury Gardens, Reading).

Survivors were pursued to Kandahar, where they set up defences against the Afghan forces of Ayub Khan.

Frederick Roberts led a force from Kabul to relieve Kandahar. (Lord Roberts is commemorated by a large monument overlooking Kelvingrove Park in Glasgow.)

They covered over 300 miles in 20 days, arriving outside Kandahar and successfully ending the siege on this day, with around 100 men dead, to an estimated 1,000 Afghans.

The write-up on the National Army Museum website states:

"After taking part in Major-General Frederick Roberts' famous march from Kabul to Kandahar in August 1880, the 92nd Highlanders were immediately sent into action in order to relieve the besieged garrison. During the subsequent fight, Lieutenant Menzies, on hearing voices on the other side of a locked door, shot the lock open. Immediately a shot came from inside the room, wounding the lieutenant. Drummer Roddick, the closest soldier to Menzies, drew his claymore and stood over the officer while a group of Afghans rushed through the door. Roddick fought them off until a second soldier arrived, thus allowing Menzies to be carried to safety."

EDWIN BUDDING, LAWNMOWER MAN, REVOLUTIONISES SPORT
On this day, 31 August 1830, Edwin Budding from Eastington, Stroud, patented the first mechanical lawnmower. This revolutionised outdoor sports such as football and golf, and also, of course, gardening!

The head gardener at the Zoological Gardens in Regent's Park, Mr Curtis, commented that he found that "with two men, one to draw and another to push, it does as much work as six or eight men with scythes and brooms; not only in mowing, but sweeping up the grass, and lifting it into a box; performing the whole so perfectly as not to leave a mark of any kind behind."

Budding is also credited with the invention of the screw-adjustable spanner in 1842.

He was born on 25 August 1796 and died on 25 September 1846. He is buried in St Marks Churchyard, Dursley, Stroud.

VULCAN BOMBER, FIRST FLIGHT
On this Day in British History, 30 August 1952, the first flight of what was to become known as the Vulcan Bomber, at Woodford Aerodrome, Greater Manchester. A total of 134 production Vulcans were assembled at Woodford Aerodrome between August 1952 and January 1965.

The all-British creation was a high-altitude bomber capable of taking both nuclear and conventional payloads. It had no defensive weaponry, relying upon high-speed, high-altitude flight to evade interception.

It famously took part in the longest bombing raid in history – "Operation Black Buck" – in the Falklands Campaign of 1982.

The distinctive delta-winged aircraft was in service until March 1984.

One Vulcan was left, "The Spirit of Great Britain" (XH588) which would tour Air Shows, but it was retired in October 2015.
