Myth.

(and we get asked this all the time)

If your mot runs out, you've got two weeks 'grace' to keep driving whilst you get booked in.

Just to clarify (and we're not sure where the rumour came from) but unfortunately, the 2-week grace period is a myth. Once your MOT has expired, in the eyes of the law, you are not legally allowed to drive the car - if you do, you could receive a fine of up to £1,000 and your vehicle could be impounded as outlined in Section 47 of the Road Traffic Act 1988.

But, what you can do is have your MOT done up to 30 days prior and retain the original expiry date.

We plan a bit further ahead than that and send out our reminders six weeks prior, just to be sure you've got plenty of opportunity before your due date.

I hope this info clears up what seems to be a common misconception and should it be beneficial to be added to our mot reminder list just send us a message with your cars registration number and your contact number and ill get you added.

Thank you as always.

Alex

i spy with my little eye, something, the colour green 🔍

looking at a 63 plate VW Polo today we have a fault on not one but both lambda sensors with both reporting voltage low conditions on a heater inside the sensor.

looking at the manufacturers wiring diagram both sensors share a common live direct from the fuse box and then feed back to the ecu via their own earth wire (this is how they are switched on and off).

Some tests revealed a stable voltage at the sensors when all was static, but start the engine and it fluctuated as low as six volts.

tracing the wiring back it was soon established that a securing clip for the wiring loom had decided to call it a day and thus over time the wires had rubbed through to ground, sapping some of the much needed volts ergo flagging both sensors as faulty.

One repair made in line with the manufacturers guidelines followed by a road test (plus a new loom securing clip) and alls now back to how it should be !

Good morning all,

Just a heads up for those with an MOT over the next few months to plan ahead and get booked in in plenty of time, the reason being is three years ago when lockdown was a thing, everyone who's MOT was due between April and September got a six month extension on their test due date, meaning that whilst there's loads of spaces free over summer, autumn onwards gets super busy with on average a two week wait to get get an appointment.

It takes just a few minutes to make a booking and this can booked as far in advance as you like, either through the office on 868691 or on the link below.

Thank you as always, Alex.

Good morning all,

A quick “ask and you shall get” post.

Recently someone asked me if I’d ever considered re lining the car park with the spaces at 45 degrees to make parking bit easier, I hadn’t, but it made awesome sense.

So, here we are, with a new layout, look at all the extra room !

Have a good weekend all.

Alex

I know it’s Saturday night and I appreciate cars are the last thing on your mind but just a little post of why the cheapest bidder isn’t always the best value. Someone at some point has had the lower suspension arms off this car, I suspect the change the clutch as there’s lots of carnage over in the gearbox area, and in the process not only split this suspension component boot, designed to keep grease in to keep it lubricated, but also damaged the arm it’s part of too. Part of the price is the due care and attention we pay to your car to prevent further costs incurred that really , you shouldn’t have. Have a good weekend, Alex

The end of last week saw Alex take his exams in order to gain his IMI diagnostic Technician qualification, which were delighted to say he passed!

Alex loves getting stuck into a problem and this course helps his diagnostic skills by cementing the underpinnings of the intricate systems found in many cars we see.

A lot a hard work, long hours and many many miles were travelled to be able to train with the excellent trainers down at Tech Topics, which is way down in somerset, and we know that hard as it may have been, its sets him out amongst his peers as someone willing to develop and progress no matter the hardship involved.

Congratulations Alex.

Next step, Master Technician!

Two sensors,

Two massively different prices.

The one on the left is non genuine and £40

The one on the right is genuine and £730

The one on the left though is reading far too high and as such the car "thinks" there's a problem with the exhaust when in fact there's not. The car cannot be driven more than a day without the engine light illuminating.

But imagine being without your car for a week, fitting the cheaper sensor and finding after a few days its no different, then finding somewhere else to look at the same fault, again paying a diagnostic charge, only be told its the same thing you've just had replaced and that its going to be near a thousand pounds with vat when the "last guy" only charged you sort of £100. It can be very frustrating.

So, why is it so much more expensive ?

One word, Quality.

The dearer sensor will be manufactured to a much higher standard and it will 100% read correctly. Imagine if the manufacturer fitter 10's of thousand of cheap sensors to every car they made, it'd be a disaster for them, all coming back faulty.

So, back to the sensor, This is something that I see a lot more that you imagine and 9/10 times I will physically demonstrate, if I can, why that the sensor is faulty.

Of course price is one of the leading factors in why I would only recommend the genuine sensor, but more so because I believe that every penny you spend with me should be the absolute best investment of your financial resources.

One new genuine sensor fitted and this car is back up and running as it should, no light, no reduced power, and one happy customer.

On to the next job !

Alex

What do, we, as a business, stand for ? What does, Fairway motors and its employees stand for, what are, the core values and standards that we apply, as a business, abide by, to make the decisions that we do ?

A conversation that we have just had that has been both an enlightening and thoughtful experience with a good customer of ours this morning.

Some may know that not so long back I served 5 years with HM Armed forces, where my morals and standards were under constant scrutiny and I absolutely thrived of the structure and discipline that brought with it, and we try, as a business to abide to the same high morals and standards I did then, now, to the absolute best of our ability.

We had today, a vehicle in that earlier in the year was advised had some significant corrosion to the front brakes so was booked in to have them replaced. However, on a more thorough inspection with the wheels off it transpired that with a small amount of work the
brakes could be brought right back to a fully serviceable standard, ergo, saving the customer the better part of around £180 for which they were very grateful and surprised to have a call to say so, they expected we would have just fitted them and generated a bill, with no knowledge otherwise.

As a business its is of course, essential that we sell our time and goods to remain here for you when you need, but it is more important to us that if we are charging you for repairs, they are absolutely needed and it is a sound investment of your financial resources and that is why, morally, i could not replace the brakes on this car, it would have been criminal to do so.

This gave us the opportunity to recap as a team why we are here and what we stand by.

Its key to me that we are felt to be honest, that we attain moral integrity and conduct the highest level of professionalism we possibly can, I can ask no more of my staff as they show up every day and with their best intent give their all.

As a closer, I thank you for letting me share this insight to our morning today, customers give us great satisfaction when without evening thinking twice about what we have done they highlight their recognition that we are doing autonomously what we strive to do and genuinely I value anyone's feedback to this post, in either direction.

My kindest regards to you all as always,

Alex.

For the rest of this week myself and staff will be out of office doing what families and friends do best, so my apologies if you can't reach me, I'll be somewhere mending a scraped knee or fixing a flake into an ice cream no doubt. Rest assured we'll be back at our posts come Monday ready to go and trust you've all had an exceptional Easter. Kindest regards as always, Alex.

This afternoon I’m looking at a Citroen for an ABS fault, the drivers rear wheel is registering 655.35 Kmh, clearly this isn’t right. Using a proven test plan we were able to find a small break in the wiring loom to the rear right wheel speed sensor. With the wire repaired we’re back at normal speeds again.
