So before you reach for that watering can, take a look at these tips from Garden Lady:
1️⃣ Check the health of your soil and cover it with mulch to retain moisture.
2️⃣ Water only when necessary, such as when plants are wilting.
3️⃣ Avoid shallow rooting by watering deeply and evenly.
4️⃣ The best time to water is early in the morning or in the evening.

With these tips, you'll have a lush and thriving garden without wasting precious water 💧🌿

How to give wildlife a helping hand for Garden Wildlife Week running Monday 3rd to Sunday 9th June.

Bees
Bumblebees are the most famous pollinators, and without these buzzing little creatures, far fewer flowers, fruits and vegetables would be growing around us. Bee hotels are a great way to help by providing much-needed shelter. Your local Garden Centre's should stocks bee hotels and insect houses tor simply make one out of bamboo, twigs and string.

Insects
Ladybirds are one of the most popular varieties with UK gardeners, not only for their attractiveness but also as a biological pest control method. Hoverflies are often confused with wasps or bees due to their similar appearance, but they help control aphids, thrips, and caterpillars. Just like the bee hotels, insect houses work exactly the same.

Hedgehogs
One of the biggest challenges hedgehogs face is the lack of connected habitats. Unfortunately, the number of these spiky mammals in the UK has fallen by around 50% since the turn of the century as intensive farming has destroyed their homes and nesting sites, such as hedgerows and field edges. Hedgehog houses help provide a safe habitat while also helping them hibernate during the long, cold winters. Gardens are very important to hedgehogs. You can also help ensure that some of your lawns are overgrown, as hedgehogs like to hide in tall grass and make holes in your fence or hedge so they can wander between gardens at night.

Collect brown materials like dried leaves and straw, and mix them with green materials such as grass clippings and weeds. Remember to chop them up for faster decomposition. 🌿

You can either create a "hot pile" by alternating layers of greens and browns, or a "cold pile" where you regularly add materials without turning it. Whichever method you choose, you'll have nutrient-rich compost in just a few months!
