We had a fantastic day with Kathryn Jones of Trailing K9s yesterday on our workshop, so much so that we've changed venue and are back at the university again today as she loved this venue π
Today we've been in some blustery winds in Hessleπ
A mini spaniel day π not the best conditions for spanners in the wind especially as we did some open ground into woods, lots of decision points and distractions tooπ
Oh they were good, no crittering, lots of nose to trail and considerably steadier than usual π
Awesome morning ladies π
We've already had 4 pass their novice retrieve π it's great fun βΊοΈ
Letβs Talk Retrieve!
At UK Scent Sport, weβre all about finding fun, engaging ways to bond with our dogsβand the game of retrieve is a perfect example! πΎ
Hereβs why adding retrieve to your dogβs routine can be so beneficial:
β¨ Encourages Natural Instincts
Retrieve taps into your dogβs innate hunting and gathering instincts. By providing an outlet for these natural behaviors, weβre keeping our dogs fulfilled and happy.
β¨ Low-Pressure Mental Engagement
This isnβt about high-stakes competition. Itβs a low-pressure way for your dog to use their brain, keeping them engaged without the intensity of structured training.
β¨ Supports Calm and Focused Energy Release
Retrieve allows dogs to release pent-up energy in a calm and controlled way. Itβs a fantastic method to help them stay focused and content.
β¨ Non-Competitive Enjoyment
Forget the medals; this is about pure enjoyment. Retrieve games foster joy and connection without any pressure to perform.
β¨ Builds Bonds Through Play
Play is one of the most effective ways to build trust and deepen your relationship with your dog. Retrieve games make bonding natural and fun.
β¨ Great for Puppies at Home
Starting retrieve games early is a wonderful way to encourage your puppyβs learning and curiosity in a familiar environment.
Whether youβre just starting with a young pup or looking to introduce something new to your routine with an older dog, retrieve offers benefits for dogs and owners alike. Letβs celebrate the joy of playβwhere training meets pure, tail-wagging happiness!
Sunday we had a morning and afternoon session at our lovely private venue in Hessle π
A whole host of different dogs doing different things all at different stages of their journeys π
It was a busy one in lovely autumn sunshine again βΊοΈ
Awesome day guys both sessions smashed it π
On Saturday we shared our friend Jane's of Black Diamond Dog Training lovely venue π
A long way for us but sold to the guys with the promise of great trailing, cafe and toilets π
We had an awesome morning trailing around derelict buildings, crossing roads and played with some hillocks tooπ
Jane ran me some lovely little trails for newbie Saffy, who has learnt the C&G way of trailing tooπ
My guys were awesome π― but sadly we also said goodbye to Billy whose gone off to his new life as a guide dog in training π we wish him the very best of luck π€ but also know he has a home waiting if he should failπ
Those of you booked on to the Kathryn Jones workshop next weekend I'll be in touch Monday please keep your eyes open for a WhatsApp group invite π
Weekends as you know are for trailing π
We've had a few level 1 assessments recently π
So a massive congratulations to...

πππ Well done guys,π― πππ
What a gorgeous day it was on Thursday β€οΈ
We spent it over in Withernsea which was much busier than usual, really challenging environment for the dogs as the wind picked up too.
The dogs blew us away, following their trails up busy streets, crossing busy roads, work past and through distractions π
Amazing day guys well done π―ππ
Sunday we were out in Howden getting wet again π
A mixture of urban and rural trails challenged the dogs and lots of distractions around from loose dogs to groups of teenagers hiding from the weather on our trailsπ
The dogs worked really hard to hunt down their person in the π¬οΈ
Well done guys π―

The wind and rain really challenged our mantrailing dogs over the weekend π
Saturday morning we were at the university, we lost one due to the weather and some idiots letting fireworks off during the night before, causing him to have a meltdown π
So just 4 teams working on tidying up the handler, junctions in the wind and split trails with people the dogs already had reward history with, really proofing their understanding π no means feat in gusty wet weather!
Great morning guys π
Sunday we had the most awesome urban trailing session π
What great place it is for trailing all the junctions, the station road crossings galore and people but still pretty quiet π
The teams absolutely smashed it π
So we've done a thing and taken Jo's little Saffy along for the ride π
Sorry these are late guys π
Saturday saw us braving the very sudden drop in temperature, wind and rain at one of our most popular venuesπ
It was a tad chilly and a lot of blown scent from the Humber made conditions challenging for the dogs, they worked their socks off meeting the challenges head onπ
Well done guys π―
Away again guys π slowly editing those many pictures I take π€£π€£ bear with me.
Just a quick one I'll leave you with.....
What a session in Goole yesterday ππ
Phew exams are over and I passed π
Sunday saw us at our new private venue for the last time for a few months π’
We had the best time, there are just so many natural distractions here to really challenge the dogs and the wind creating so much blown scent again π
We'll be back there in 2025 for those of you who have missed outπ
I can't wait it really is the most amazing place to trail but you might get wet feet π€£π€£
Some more pics from Saturday morning, my signal is terrible here guys π
Saturday we were at our most popular venue π the wind played havoc with our trails and made all the dogs work extra hard to hunt down their person π
A little fun with the camo net too π
Everyone working on their specific goals, including 2 mock assessments π
Well done guys, awesome morning π
Just a reminder guys that I am now away and in training mode at the College of Scent Dogs π
I will be posting our weekend events shortly but in the meantime......
It really is a dog and not a demon π π€£π€£
I love it when people create great things for me to share π
DEBUNKING THE MANTRAILING MYTHS
1. Myth: Only Confident Dogs Can Succeed at Mantrailing!
Fact: Mantrailing is an excellent confidence building activity for shy or nervous dogs. As they successfully find their βmissing personβ and receive praise or treats, their sense of accomplishment grows. Over time, this builds self-assurance, making them more comfortable in a variety of situations.
2. Myth: Mantrailing Dogs Are Constantly in βHunt Modeβ
Fact: Mantrailing dogs are trained to control their drive and turn it on or off as needed. With structured training and clear communication with their handler, dogs learn to distinguish between trailing and enjoying a regular walk or downtime. Not giving dogs an outlet for their genetic drive can actually make it worse, leading to frustration or undesired behaviours. Mantrailing provides a healthy, controlled outlet that we manage, helping dogs become more balanced and adaptable.
3. Myth: Mantrailing Increases a Dogβs Desire to Chase
Fact: Mantrailing and chasing are two distinct behaviours. During mantrailing, dogs work at a controlled pace and focus on following a scent rather than visual cues. Without a proper outlet for their prey drive, dogs may become more reactive or display undesirable behaviours. Mantrailing provides a constructive and acceptable outlet that we control, allowing dogs to channel their instincts into scent work, making them more focused and less inclined to chase impulsively..
4. Myth: Mantrailing Leads to Dogs Ignoring Their Handlers
Fact: Mantrailing actually strengthens the bond between dog and handler. Success on the trail depends on trust and communication, enhancing the dogβs responsiveness and attentiveness to their handler. Handlers also learn to read their dogs better, fostering a deeper connection.
5. Myth: Mantrailing Will Make My Dog More Independent and Disobedient
Fact: Mantrailing promotes cooperation between dog and handler. Although the dog leads the trail, it still requires them to respond to cues and work as part of a team. This partnership often results in dogs being more attentive to their handlers, not less.
Thursday morning saw us welcome these 2 beauties to the world of Mantrailing π
Our first Czechoslavakian wolf dog and another gorgeous spaniel π
Both got the game really quickly, both are going to be awesome π
The other dogs having fun in the woods in the gorgeous autumn sunshine π
