What is causing my bruising?

Bruising occurs when blood vessels are punctured by the needle used to inject the filler under the skin. Indeed, some degree of bruising should always be expected when having any kind of injection. The reason that lips and tear troughs are so susceptible to bruising is that they are quite vascular, so the veins are harder to avoid.  However, bruising from filler injections is no different to any other type of bruise, such as those from blood tests or immunisations. As with any other, the kind of bruise you get from fillers will usually subside within 5-7 days.

To help minimise bruising you should.....

Avoid taking blood-thinning medications (such as aspirin) for roughly a week before your injections. Of course, if you are under the direct care and prescription of your GP to take these medications, then you should continue to do so. Blood thinning medications prevent blood from clotting as easily, which can make it easier for you to bruise.

Alcohol also acts as a blood thinner, so give it a miss for a few days before an injection.

Being low on iron means your skin is more susceptible to bruising because your body needs iron to keep your blood cells healthy. If your blood cells aren't healthy, your body won't be able to get the oxygen that it needs to function.

Heavy periods may lead to iron deficiency so try to avoid getting fillers done when your are on your period.

Some people tend to bruise more easily as they age because blood vessels become weaker and the skin thins. Easy bruising may also run in families, so people whose relatives bruise easily may notice that they do too.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR DERMAL FILLERS:

GETTING READY FOR TREATMENT
The first step to having dermal fillers is a consultation. It gives us time to get to know each other, so treatment feels more personal on the day. And, of course, we’ll put your mind at ease by talking through all the pros and cons of your dermal fillers, so you know you’re making the best choice for you. We might also recommend other procedures which could help give you the results you’re looking for, or conversely, if we don’t feel dermal fillers are right for you, we’ll be clear, open and honest. After all, we want all our clients to love their results!

A FEW DAYS BEFORE
* First off, avoid any blood thinners, which could cause, or worsen, side effects like bruising or swelling. This includes pain relief like aspirin and ibuprofen.
* It’s also a good idea to check in with us (or your GP) about any supplements you might be taking too, for similar reasons.
* We recommend avoiding putting products on your skin, or using any hair removal treatments, prior to treatment.
* In the final 24 hours, avoid drinking alcohol.

ON THE DAY
We ask our clients to arrive without makeup and will use numbing agents to ensure your dermal filler treatment is as comfortable as possible. We’ll also advise you further on any aftercare you may need to follow, but as a general rule, follow the pre-care instructions, keep out of the sun, and avoid heat treatments (such as spas or saunas).

We all bruise, but some of us are more susceptible to bruising than others.
Bruising is blood pooling under the skin from broken capillaries (tiny blood vessels). This blood deoxygenates, which produces blue, purple and yellow colors just under the skin. It takes time for our body to flush these dead blood cells away.

Our skin needs a lot of blood to be healthy, so the layers just under the surface are rich in tiny blood vessels called capillaries. Because these vessels are so small, they are also very delicate. When we suffer an impact, the force of it (even when it seems as though there was hardly any force applied at all) overcomes the elasticity of the capillary walls and the walls rupture, leaking blood into the area just under the skin.
This blood under the surface gives the bruise its initial red color, but this very quickly fades to various shades of blue, black, green and yellow. This happens as the blood cells, which are no longer receiving oxygen. Women have less collagen, men have more. More collagen means that the impact gets spread out more, and it also provides more support for the capillaries. Men typically have not only more collagen, but the collagen layer itself is thicker. So, because our skin has less and the layer is thinner, that means the impact doesn’t get spread out and the capillaries don’t have as much support, so they break more easily.

A second reason is, well, fat. You may have heard that women have an extra fat layer which men don’t have. This isn’t true, but we are genetically programmed to carry more fat than men, and also to carry more subcutaneous fat – that is, fat under the skin.

Many men who don’t carry this fat layer, and some women as well, benefit from having the collagen-laced dermis resting almost directly on a layer of muscle. Muscle obviously is much firmer than fat, so this provides a sounder substrate for the skin, preventing much of the distortion that leads to tearing and rupturing of the capillaries. This is why most men need to be hit much harder to form a bruise than us women do.

Botulinum toxin (Botox) consists of 7 types of neurotoxins; however, only toxins A and B are used clinically. Botox A is used for several disorders in the field of medicine, particularly in dermatology, for cosmetic purposes. It is produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum and can be used as a treatment to reduce the appearance of wrinkles in the upper areas of the face, elevate the eyebrows and treat problems such as hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating).

Normally, your brain sends electrical messages to your muscles so that they can contract and move. The electrical message is transmitted to the muscle by a substance called acetylcholine. Toxin works to block the release of acetylcholine and, as a result, the muscle does not receive the message to contract. This means that the muscle spasms or movements that cause wrinkling, stop or are greatly reduced after using toxin. Patients sometimes refer to the effects of the injection to their area of treatment as being “paralyzed” temporarily.

Patients with hyperhydrosis (intense sweating) also can temporarily remedy their disorder. The toxin is injected into the areas which sweat profusely like the under arms and backs of knees or palms of the hands, the toxin blocks the release of acetylcholine near the sweat glands which cause the excessive sweating

Toxin is injected with a micro-needle into the muscle(s) or areas that your individual needs require. The most requested areas of treatment and complaint are the forehead and outer eye area, clients report that discomfort is minimal.

Tear trough filler

In order to reduce the amount of bruising and swelling at the injection site, We make the following recommendations about how to prepare for dermal fillers:

One Week Prior to Dermal filler Injections

Avoid blood thinning over-the-counter medications such as aspirin, Motrin, ibuprofen, and Naproxen.

3 Days Prior to Dermal filler Injections

Avoid drinking products containing caffeine

Avoid topical products such (Retin-A), Retinol, Retinoids and glycolic Acid

Avoid waxing, bleaching, tweezing, or using hair removal cream on the area to be treated.

Do start taking Arnica two days prior to the procedure. (This is not required, but it will help to lessen bruising.)

24 Hours Prior to Dermal filler Injections

Do not drink alcoholic beverages 24 hours prior.
General Recommendations

If you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, please let your practitioner aware.

WHAT TO DO AFTER FILLERS: THE FIRST HOUR

Apply an ice pack and Arnica topically—Arnica + Bromelain tablets are both natural supplements to reduce bruising. These are available for purchase at your local pharmacy.

HOW TO REDUCE SWELLING AFTER LIP INJECTIONS

6 to 10 Hours After Treatment

Until the swelling and redness have resolved, avoid intense heat in the treated area(s). This includes sunbathing, tanning, saunas, hot tubs, or hot wax.

To help alleviate swelling, we recommend an antihistamine during the day.

If there is a visible bump, you can massage the area. Depending on the areas treated and the product used, you may feel “firmness.” These areas will soften and settle with time (usually 1-2 weeks).

Sunscreen and makeup can be applied, and you may use a gentle cleanser on the area.

HOW TO REDUCE BRUISING AFTER FILLERS

Avoid drinking alcohol or partaking in strenuous exercise, as it may result in additional bruising.

To help alleviate bruising, we recommend taking Arnica, eating fresh pineapple: (pineapple can help reduce the duration and severity of bruising. It contains an enzyme called Bromelain, which is found in the juice and stem of the fruit. The anti-inflam
properties of Bromelain help reduce bruising and swelling).
