Things that seem small or simple to us, can seem complicated or feel like the end of the world to children. It might seem like an overreaction to you, but it's very real to them. This is why it's important to try and better understand their thought processes to better communicate with them and understand their behaviours.

Like many other mental health conditions, there's a lot to anxiety that we don't see. What might look like misbehaviour to you, underneath could be anxiety or low self-esteem.

Summer is almost here! Sometimes it can be hard to find things to pass the time over the summer and keep your children occupied. Giving them the opportunity to plan activities themselves or make choices in what they do can build confidence and independence, while also reducing fears surrounding unfamiliarity and lack of control. Would you let your child plan summer activities? Let us know in the comments below!

Happy pride month!

While being LGBTQ does not inherently make someone more susceptible to mental health issues, the discrimination they still face can contribute to worse mental health for those in the community.

Around 13% of LGBTQ Youth (18-24) will attempt to take their own life in the next year.
That’s why here at Anxend, we create a safe space for all those within the LGBTQ+ community. We believe everyone deserves support, regardless of how they identify.

Our condolences to the family of Grayson Murray, two-time PGA tour winner, after he took his own life. Losing a child bears a heavy weight on a family, no matter the age. Even as our children grow up, managing their mental health is still incredibly important. Su***de is still one of the top killers of today's generation. Talking about it is the first step to preventing it.

Our well wishes go to the family of Grayson Murray through this difficult time.

People-pleasing is a common side-effect of anxiety. While it may seem like a good thing, it has its downsides.
People-pleasing is when someone puts others' needs above their own. This can include agreeing to things they don’t want to do, avoiding conflict, and hiding their true feelings.
Of course, it's good to be nice to people, however, for some, people-pleasing behaviours can be self-destructive. It can cause repressed feelings of frustration, low self-esteem, and can damage relationships.
So how do we stop it?
1. Start small by just saying ‘no’ to smaller requests, and build up as you build confidence.
2. Setting boundaries gives people an idea of what you’re willing to do, and will help them to think before doing things you don’t enjoy.
3. Avoid making excuses. You don’t need to give 101 reasons why you can’t. It’s ok to say no.
4. If you want to help someone, by all means, go for it, but make sure it's because you want to. Take back that power.

No, it's not "all in your head", because anxiety has real physical symptoms! These are just some of the ways in which anxiety can prevent physically. Do you or your child experience any of these? Let us know in the comments below.

Anxiety and other mental health conditions can greatly affect sleep, and it also works the other way - poor sleep can worsen anxiety and mental health conditions. Sleep is incredibly important, so here are some tips to help encourage your children to get adequate sleep.
1. Turn off all screens at least an hour before bedtime - Screens can be stimulating for our brains and prevent production of melatonin, the sleep hormone.
2. Do some calming, fine motor activities - Activities like crafts, jigsaws, and colouring can be relaxing to help set a calm mood before bedtime.
3. Play some quiet music or rain sounds - Music can be soothing and provide a distraction from bedtime anxiety.
4. Set a regular sleep schedule - Especially for younger children, setting a consistent sleep routine is important. Consistency helps to set sleep habits.
5. Reduce the focus on sleep - Alleviate the pressure of needing sleep to be the end goal, and instead focus on relaxation and winding down.

We love to hear success stories from the people we work with. Here we have Aiden, who came to us with severe anxiety, along with ADHD and ASD. When starting our program, he had not left his house for 2 years, and was reluctant to join us, but soon started to engage and become enthusiastic about his sessions. By the end of the program, Aiden was back at school full time, and had gained the confidence to talk to others - something he struggled with before starting with us. And now, here he is on a day trip with his mum to Ireland!🍀✈️This is a huge achievement, and we are all very proud of how far he has come. 🙌🎉🌟

Does your child often get nervous for exams? Exam stress can happen for many reasons, including:
- Feeling unprepared
- Pressure from themselves or friends/family
- Comparing themselves to others
- Worrying about the future
You can help your child to manage their stress around exam season by encouraging them to :
- Take regular breaks from studying
- Talk to others about how they feel
- Take care of physical wellbeing (eat well and exercise)
- Take time to focus on themselves.
To manage nerves during the exam, some useful tips are:
- Use breathing exercises, like the 4-7-8 method
- Use grounding exercises, like the 5 senses method
- Take their time, try not to rush through
- Remind themselves that it will be over soon

📚✨ Understanding School Absences: A Deeper Dive into Mental Health Barriers.

The recent report from the CYPMHC reveals the intricate link between mental health and school attendance. With rising concerns over children's persistent absence post-pandemic, it's clear that mere punitive measures like fines are not the solution. We need a supportive approach that addresses the mental health needs and other underlying causes of absenteeism. Let's unite to foster an environment where every child can thrive in school. 🌟
