This week our blog explored the important issue of keeping our children safe online.

I just love getting creative in sessions. This week it was my turn to learn something new! One of my clients taught me how to draw a number mouse using a 7,2,8 and a cross. π
Drawing is such a great thing to do to switch off from a busy life.

β¨ On the Blog β¨ Weβre going back to basics for this weekβs blog in recognition of National Simplicity Day.
This day is marked each year to encourage us to reflect on our busy lives and consider ways we can make life simpler in order to help reduce stress and live more peacefully β something all of us parents want more of in our lives, weβre sure!
There is no denying, that with modern-day demands, family life can feel overwhelming and simply frantic at times. Whether weβre:
π€― Rushing to get the kids out of the door for school
π€― Running children to after-school clubs and activities
π€― Dealing with jobs around the home or at work
π€― Or cramming in a bit of guilt-laden self-care at the end of the day
There are times when we would love nothing more than for life to simply slow down!
And as much as technology has brought us so much convenience, it is also of course partly to blame for our fast-paced lives and those modern-day stresses. We live in a world where everything is at our fingertips, where instant gratification is an expectation, and where our lives are broadcast and compared on social media. Not only can this feel overwhelming for us as parents, but it is a message our children receive daily too β and this can make life feel far from simple.
Studies show that living more simply not only reduces feelings of stress but also produces positive effects on the brain in a number of ways, including:
π Boosting creativity
π Improved concentration
π Enjoying a better nightβs sleep
π Improved relationships
Living more simply, of course, means something different for everyone and every family. Itβs about ditching those things that no longer serve us and which we continue to do (or donβt do) largely out of habit. And, when we consider the fact that the majority of our behaviours every day are performed using the sub-conscious, habit-forming part of the brain, it comes as no surprise that consciously reassessing family life from time to time can work wonders for our feelings of overall well-being. We all know how productive and energised we feel after a good spring clean - and this is really no different!
So, perhaps living more simply for you and your family might involve:
β¨Ditching unhealthy habits
β¨Spending more time in nature
β¨ Taking more time out for YOU
β¨ Relying less on technology
β¨ Becoming more organised
β¨ Enjoying more quality time together
β¨ Practising gratitude for the things you have
β¨ Decluttering your home
β¨ Setting realistic goals
β¨ Or, all of the above!
So, in reading our blog today, we invite you to consider the last time you stopped and reflected on your life as a family. How closely does it align with your values and goals and what small changes might you like to make?
And, as always, if you need a little fairy-inspiration to get you started, grab a cuppa βοΈand head on over to The Parent Pad to read our blog in full!

Itβs July so we will BBQ, even in the rain. βοΈ
A lovely weekend with friends and family and even a win for England to top it off!
πͺ Life is tough my darling...
But then so are you.
β¨ On the Blog β¨ This week we look at the benefits of getting creative and how this can have a positive and beneficial impact on our childrenβs overall feelings of happiness and general well-being.
Some of us, or our children, might identify as creative people, perhaps being:
π¨ artsy and crafty
βοΈ great at writing
π΅ music or dancing
π€ or just thinking outside the box.
The truth is though we donβt need any particular talents in this area to reap the benefits. Just a willingness to explore is all it takes!
And, with lots of families having time together over the coming holidays, what better time to try!
Getting creative enables us to see the world with a different set of eyes β it gives us a new and fresh perspective on the world around us. Not only that, but it can allow us to explore and project a different part of ourselves that we might not otherwise show, allowing deeper emotions to be explored and released.
In fact, many people find that it is during their darkest, most difficult times, that their creative energies really flow. Take well-renowned singers and songwriters, for example, who create some of their best work as a result of pain, hardship or sorrow. This is because being creative allows us to βvoiceβ feelings and emotions in ways we might otherwise feel unable to express β and this is even more true when it comes to children!
Three quarters of the brain develops after a child is born, until children reach early adulthood around their early twenties. It is during this time that creativity or creative play stimulates receptors in the brain that help it to develop connections between nerve cells. This impacts on a childβs ability to process information in a range of ways and areas of development, including:
π Social development and interaction with others
π Emotional development
π Cognitive development and thinking skills
π Physical development
π Intellectual development
So, not only can getting creative be really helpful during difficult times or times of stress, but we are helping our children to lay the foundations for good all-round health.
And by encouraging our children to establish creative habits as a fun form of self-expression, we can also support them in better managing their emotional well-being and mental health in the long term, which is so important.
Creativity can help children (and parents) to:
π Reduce feelings of anxiety and depression
π Relieve stress
π Process emotions, including trauma
π Increase positive emotions
π Solve problems by enabling us to think in new and different ways
π Improve the function of the immune system
π Improve relationships and develop social skills
π Unblock old, unhealthy patterns of thinking
π Relieve feelings of boredom and increase motivation
π Increase self-awareness and self-esteem

π On the Blog π
Toilet anxiety in children is a common yet often overlooked issue that can cause significant stress and discomfort for your child, but also can lead to a great deal of stress and worry for you as a parent too.
From fear of using public toilets, to holding on to urine or stool, or feeling overwhelmed by the sensory experiences of toilets, such as a flushing toilet or noisy hand dryers, toilet phobia can be debilitating for a child, fuelling anxiety for not only the child but the whole family too.
π And, like any form of anxiety, the more we worry for our children, the more it can fuel this negative cycle.
If your child shows signs of anxiety around using the toilet, itβs important to help them to break this negative association.
In this weekβs blog, we look at:
πWhat toilet anxiety is
πHow to recognise it
πThe problems it can cause
πAnd provide some practical tips for you to try at home

π As parents, we have likely all experienced the challenges bed time can bring. Whether our children are not tired, too tired, too hot, scared of monsters under the bed, scared of sleeping alone or wake frequently in the night, bed time can be a challenge - and this is compounded even more so when our child experiences nightmares or even night terrors.
π Nightmares and night terrors are terrifying for children and equally distressing for us. But what exactly are they, and how can we help our kids (and ourselves) get through them?
This weekβs blog covers:
