Hey π It's been a while..
First cafe trip πΆβοΈπ
We have a new space for Broga classes in Godalming. Come take your shavasana (relaxation bit at the end) under a fluffy cloud! βοΈβ¨οΈ To book contact Matt .coach
Its the last Sunday evening class in All Saints. Saying thank you with a candle lit class, little gift bag and mince pies β¨οΈβ¨οΈ
Reminder for Sunday yoga crew that Yasmine Weeks will be covering class this week at the usual time place and time, All Saints Church, 7-8pm. Yasmine is an incredible teacher, a GP and an amazing force of positive, joyful energy, so you are in for a treat!
Yasmine's style is very similar to mine in that she focuses on holding the poses and bringing awareness to the breath. And there will ofcourse be a lovely long shavasana at the end.
Have fun - but not too much ;) and i'll see you all next week!
Super proud of Ed for tackling Crib Goch at the weekend and taking some amazing shots too πβοΈ
Pay attention to what you are telling yourself and your children
How do you talk to yourself? What do you say about your body? Picture yourself saying those words to a loved one about their body. How would those words make them feel?
The things you say to yourself are just as important if not more so than the feedback you receive from the outside world. Why make life harder than it already is? Be kind - most importantly to yourself.
Monday musings...
Do you connect your worth to your weight or your body shape? Do you feel pressure from society and others do to so? What if you decided you were lovable and worthy just as you are. How would you treat yourself?
β€οΈ
Just this...
Happy wkend π
There is something about writing with pencil that feels so creative and calming and far away from modern tech.
Really enjoying creating my class plans this way lately. It all just flows more easily...maybe I'll try a fountain pen next and learn a new craft π
So often we associate exercise with punishment. How often have you heard someone say "I've got to go and do a workout now" or "no pain no gain". What if you thought of moving your body in a different way?
Another great session with the guys. Look at that alignment! π I think me harping on about a magical string pulling from the crown of the head must be sinking in π€΄π§Ά
Sometimes it's not until you look back you see more clearly. I'm not a big fan of before and after photos because they tend to be all about weight loss, but I'm posting this mainly because I think there's a huge difference in my demeanor.
On the left I wasn't miserable but I wasnt very happy either. Likewise I wasn't hugely overweight. I was just a bit lost. I think a lot of us feel like that from time to time.
In March '22 I made a decision to stop moaning about the parts of my life i wanted to change and actually do something about it. Losing a close friend in Oct '21 was awful but also put life into sharp perspective. This is it. Its not a rehearsal.
I could waffle on about what's worked for me but at the end of the day the obstacles were definitely more mental than physical. I prioritised my health and made a plan. I'm not at war with my body and I don't have a goal weight. I just move in ways i enjoy (yoga is a huge part of that) and try to eat well. And I'm so much happier and stronger for it.
Epic walk along the Seven Sisters today. Its a bit tough but so rewarding and there's a beautiful estuary leading to Seven Sisters National Park where you can kayak and SUP. Had a little dip in the sea too π
Brekkie of dreams β¨οΈ
We're having a go at the Seven Sisters today. Got to fuel the legs!
Lovely lake swim with my mum this morning to celebrate her birthday. Her first time. She loved it and did 550m! So pleased she's found something she really enjoys that makes her smile.
Beautiful sunset this evening π
Really enjoyed a few days at Amazing food, great company, very patient surf instructors and beautiful yoga classes π§ββοΈ Thoroughly recommend π
Brilliant trikonasana or the much easier to pronounce 'triangle pose' from the guys tonight π.
Using the block and lengthening the spine first before rolling back the top shoulder and lifting the arm works well and prevents the dreaded shrimp back π€
Well done guys! See you next week!

If there was one thing I hear most often when I say I teach yoga it's "oh I could never do yoga, I can't even touch my toes".
Then come to yoga and you will start to feel more flexible! As well as strong and calm and rested. I promise π
This week: flexibility
I've gone with a wide squat pose because it's one of those poses people either love or hate. And as my yoga teacher once said "if you don't like it, you probably need to do more of it"
We're all aware of the negative side-effects of sitting for too long - one of the main ones being our hip flexors can seize up. You know that moment when you stand up from sitting and make a noise? π
This is a great way to get some deep flexion into those hips. You'll feel the difference afterwards, I promise. Throw in a cheeky twist to really rinse out any tension in the spine - just remember to do both sides π
NB: those with keen eyes will see my right knee is dropping in a little. Fine in a twist but in a squat we can work on getting the pelvis in a neutral position. Try prayer hands and using the elbows to push thighs away π
Get squatting!
Let's try this introduction thing again shall we?
One of the motivating factors for me in becoming a yoga teacher was to be a little different and to turn up whole, not just another insta yoga account full of filters and perfect poses. Unfortunately, I think I tripped at the first hurdle. I've been trying to fit the mould.
I've always found yoga helpful because it brings me back to whats important and we are so much more than how we look.
But I was ignoring other aspects of my health. I thought that if I did yoga and the occassional run I was healthy. I was also coping with difficult emotions or hard days with a nice large glass of red wine and/or a lovely big bowl of pasta. I think I knew deep down I was self-sabotaging but bad habits are hard to break π€·ββοΈ
It wasn't until I lost my friend last year that something shifted. Amongst the shock and the huge amount of pain it also dawned on me that this is it. This one life we have been given. This one shot.
So i've started practicing what I preach and my evaluation is - its really hard but its so much better. I've started working out regularly with weights for the first time ever. I'm focusing on building strength and honouring my body with plenty of nourishing food. This then feeds into my yoga practice where my body feels stronger and more capable.
The whole commitment thing is new too. I mean not entirely - I have committed to things before, but to myself? Not so much. And discipline. I used to hate that word. Discipline? Urgh - that's no fun. Go with the flow. Explore everything! And i'm glad i've always been open minded.
But ive learnt that discipline isnt about restricting yourself from the fun stuff. Its having the determination to push through the hard stuff too - so the fun stuff is even more enjoyable. It also opens a whole new world of fun stuff due to increased self-esteem, confidence and skill set- who knew?! Everyone except me?! π
Pushing ourselves is hard but how exciting is it to see what we are actually capable of??

Here's this week's grounding pose: downward facing dog πΆ
I've chosen downdog as my favourite grounding pose because:
πΏ it allows you to look at the ground from a different perspective - it shifts your gaze
πΏ it roots you through both your hands and your feet at the same time
Try to really lengthen the spine and push those hips up and back. I always suggest keeping knees slightly bent and padding the feet for the first DD of the practice to open up the back of the legs gently.
Options include taking the hands and feet a bit wider or try using the in-breath to roll forward - shifting the weight into your arms and hands even more creating a cat-like back then using the outbreath to roll back like a wave π into a more cow-like back before finding your neutral spine in DD again. You don't have to stay still in yoga poses!
Give it a go and share your thoughts/tips/tricks below.
Come and try on Sunday evenings (Guildford) or Thursday evenings (Bro-ga in Godalming) π
April classes begin this week with a focus on the changing of the season π· It can be quite common for us to think of ourselves as separate to nature, but we are very much a part of it.
How do you feel with the changing of the season?
Throughout April we will be focusing on three themes that encourage a connection to ourselves and to the world around us:
π· Grounding - a pose that enables to feel deeply connected to the earth and the ground beneath you
π· Flexibility - a pose that encourages flexibility and adaptability to your environment
π· Strength - a pose that builds strength and leaves you feeling powerful and capable
Each Wednesday I will post a suggested pose on each of these themes with tips and options for exploring each pose a little more. In Sunday's classes we will explore the theme a little more with time for personal reflection.
Dates this month are Sunday 3rd April, 10th April and 24th April. DM or email to book your slot. See you on the mat!π€ΈββοΈ

Yoga isn't just physical poses. It's not about forcing your body to contort into impressive shapes π₯¨ It's about listening in. Connecting your mind with your body. It's about meeting yourself where you are and accepting the truth of how you feel and whats going on so that you can interact with the world around you from that foundation. It's the opposite of self-abandonment, distraction and numbing. It's about choosing what sparks joy and happiness in the long-run and its hard. And it takes practice. And no one on this earth has completed the practice. We are all students.
Pleased to announce I will be teaching at a beautiful new venue nr Godalming (Clock Barn Hall) as part of a set of classes aimed at guys who would like to try yoga, rounded off with an optional cold beer afterwards ππ»
Bro-ga will run every Thursday from 7:30 - 8:30pm. Msg me or Matt The Energy Coach for any questions and to book your place!
