On the final day of our trip before the road trip to Calais Ferry Port we have visited the picturesque small town of Bayeux where students saw the world-famous Bayeux tapestry, an embroidered cloth nearly 70 metres long. It depicts the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England. (Group photo taken outside the tapestry museum).

Students also had the opportunity to see the impressive Bayeux Cathedral and enjoyed a walk around this beautiful town.

Our year 11's laid a wreath and Grace read the poem 'Normandy' by Cyril Crain at the British & Commonwealth War Memorial which was built in 2019 to commemorate 75 years since the British & Commonwealth contributions to the liberation of Normandy.

We've had another action packed and varied day yesterday, full of Languages and History activities!

This morning Kings students very much enjoyed a visit to Noémie's goat farm in Firfol. They stroked and fed the goats and then the farmer invited them to taste some of the goats cheese. Many then used their French language skills to buy some of the cheese.

We then travelled to Arromanches-les-Bains, a coastal town. We walked around the town, with students using their French language skills in shops and cafes, where they enjoyed a drink and snack.

In the afternoon we visited Arromanches beach and students created a human Mulberry Harbour wall, to recreate the actual wall constructed by British forces in the sea as part of their liberation strategy.

This was followed by a visit to the circular 360 cinema to watch archival footage filmed by war correspondents n 1944, and then we travelled on to Gold Beach, the landing beach of the British 50th Northumbrian Division. Our final visits of the day were Juno beach and a French supermarket.

Students have had another great, action packed, educational and exciting day in Normandy!

In the morning we visited Pegasus Bridge, the site of the first building and family in France to be liberated from the N**i occupation.

We then visited Ranville British and Commonwealth War Cemetery, where we learnt and reflected on the stories of three British airbourne casualties and a military para dog buried with Pte Corteil -which helped to give students a much more personal and human historical perspective, amongst the 2562 burials.

Next we visited the Catholic Church which has a special corner, dedicated to the British and Canadian liberation of Ranville, the first village to be liberated.

In the afternoon we visited a traditional Cider Farm, a German and American War Cemetery to experience the contrast with the British War Cemetery and Omaha Beach, where 32,000 troops landed.

We've had a great first day on our Languages and History trip to Normandy, visiting the Melville Battery, a key site attacked by the 9th Battalion of The Parachute Regiment as part of D-Day. Thanks to our guides from Anglia Tours.

Did you know that the Ancient Romans used to wash themselves with oils which they then scraped and flicked off their bodies and threw into a corner of the room- the remains would then be picked up and used as medicines by doctors?

Kings Y7 Latin Club have been learning about this and more in their lessons around the city of Pompeii . As well as the culture, our Latinists have been learning that the Nominative Case is used for the subject of a sentence, and the Accusative for the object. They have been translating passages and making the link between Latin and English words we use today: 'canine' comes from 'Canis' (dog). They have been expertly guided in this by Mr. Bush and Mr. Callaghan from RGS.
