Solar can save you a lot of money on your electricity bills, but how much? 💰☀️⚡️

This question is difficult to answer without looking at how much energy you use. However, looking at an average energy use, here are some examples to give you an idea ⬇️

In London, a 3-bedroom household can save on average £581 per year with solar.

A typical London house with one or two bedrooms can expect to save on average £349 per year, while a bigger home with four or five bedrooms will save £814, on average.

✅ The further south you go in the UK, the more daylight hours and solar savings you’ll enjoy. 😎

A typical 3-bedroom home on the South Coast will typically save £627 per year.

A smaller house in the south will cut its annual electricity bills by £376 on average, while a bigger home can look forward to annual savings of £878.

And you invest in battery storage, you could eliminate electricity bills altogether and make even more savings!

👉🏼Why not share your energy bill with us and we can calculate how much you could save with solar. Contact us here for more details ⬇️

4th of July is getting closer. What are your thoughts? 🤔

We’ve been talking A LOT about the General Election because the result will have significant implications for the country, businesses and households. So as the big day approaches, we’ve been taking a proper look at what it could specifically mean for renewable energy and reaching net zero.

Conservatives

The Conservative manifesto remains committed to achieving net zero by 2050 and pledges to triple offshore wind generation, speed up major infrastructure and cut grid waiting times. The focus on community energy centres around the recent £10 million Community Energy Fund that was launched in 2023. The manifesto promises to ring-fence its commitment to International Climate Finance, however does not specify climate spending commitments.

The Conservative Party believes that energy security cannot be achieved without oil and gas so new gas power stations are planned. “Conservatives know that if we are forced to choose between clean energy and keeping citizens safe and warm, we will choose to keep the lights on.”

Labour

“At the heart” of Labour’s approach is the Green Prosperity Plan and working toward reaching net zero by 2050. Its biggest spending budget of £23.7bn is for green measures, creating 650,000 jobs by 2030, driving industrial renewal, lowering bills and creating secure supplies of clean energy.

Labour pledges to work with the private sector to double onshore wind, triple solar power and quadruple offshore wind by 2030. The party also promises to provide 100% funding to low-income households for heat pump installation.
Labour’s proposed investment mechanism, Great British Energy, is designed to partner with local authorities, the private sector, and community organisations to scale up clean energy projects. The manifesto pledges to make the UK a “clean energy superpower” by 2030. Up to £600 million in funding will be allocated for local authorities and up to £400 million annually in low-interest loans for community energy projects. The British Jobs Bonus will further incentivise companies who offer good jobs, terms and conditions and build their manufacturing supply chains in the UK.

Lib Dems

The Liberal Democrats’ manifesto promises to “put tackling climate change at the heart of a new industrial strategy.” The manifesto does not specify climate spending goals but promises to remove the barriers to new solar and wind projects and to generate 80% of Britain’s power from renewables by 2030.

The Liberal Democrats have a real focus on community energy and pledge to create a Net Zero Delivery Authority to oversee the transition to net zero and to appoint dedicated officials called ‘Warm Homes and Community Energy Tsars’ within central government to champion community energy and energy efficiency. At local level, the Lib Dems propose to give councils the authority to develop community energy-saving projects.

With the aim of reaching net zero by 2040, the LibDems have highlighted the importance of equipping the next generation with green skills and the party pledges to invest at an educational level.

Greens

The Green Party manifesto estimates that an average annual £40 billion investment will achieve a “fairer, greener” Britain. The Green Party’s pledge to nationalise the “Big 5” energy companies is the closest any party comes to a publicly-owned energy system.

Greens are aiming for wind generation to provide around 70% of the UK’s electricity by 2030, and to achieve 80 GW of offshore wind, 53GW of onshore wind, and 100 GW of solar by 2035. Green policies emphasise devolving economic power to local levels, enabling communities to meet their energy needs through local resources and initiatives such as community energy projects.

The Green manifesto also promises to prepare workers for the transition to a net zero economy and the new roles they might take on, investing in skills and training (up to £4 billion per year) to ensure that nobody is “stranded without jobs”.

Reform UK

Reform UK is the only political party that does not aim for any net zero targets. It has called net zero “the wrong bit, at the wrong price, in the wrong timeframe”. It would scrap net zero goals and “maximise Britain’s vast energy treasure trove of oil and gas”.

We hope this gives you a glimpse into the relevant part of each manifesto and an idea of the implications. For more information on energy legislation, please reach out to [email protected]

The answer is undeniably YES!!

Going solar means you can expect significant savings on your household energy bills. 💰💰💰Even with the new price cap.

Solar panels usually cost between £5,000 and £13,000, and you can expect to save between £440 and up to £1,005 on electricity bills annually.

And if you sell your excess power back to the grid via the Smart Export Guarantee, you can increase your savings further. 💹

Now, the cost of your solar system depends on how many PV panels you install but below is a rough guide:

3kW solar system with 6 x 450W panels costs £7-8000

4kW solar system with 8 x 450W panels costs £9-10,000

5kW solar system with 10 x 450W panels costs £11-12,000

6kW solar system with 13 x 450W panels costs £12-13,000

*These figures are calculated using the average UK household energy consumption.

When we conduct your survey, we can work out how long it will take to recoup your whole investment. And if you want to spread the cost of your solar panels with monthly repayments over years, ask us about our financing options.

Why is World Ocean Day so important to us? It’s not just because we are based on the South Coast and love the sea, but we appreciate that the ocean is our secret ally in climate change 🌱:

🌊 generating 50% of the oxygen we need
🌊 absorbing 25% of all CO2 emissions and
🌊 capturing 90% of the excess heat generated by these emissions.

Known as 'the lungs of the planet', the ocean is also our largest 'carbon sink' – helping tackle the impacts of climate change.

❌ But climate change is already impacting ocean health, creating a vicious cycle.

So it is vital that we protect our oceans which in turn are vital for mitigating climate change and our environment. The question is how can we protect our oceans? 🤔

The National Ocean Service recommends:

1️⃣ Use less water so excess water will not flow into the ocean 🚿🛀
2️⃣ Reduce pollutants especially cleaning products, herbicides etc 🏠🧹
3️⃣ Reduce waste especially plastics 🧴
4️⃣ Shop wisely and choose sustainable seafood 🦞
5️⃣Reduce vehicle pollution and carpool or use EVs 🚙
6️⃣ Use less energy or convert to low carbon energy such as solar ☀️
7️⃣ Fish responsibly and follow “catch and release” policies 🎣
8️⃣ Practice safe boating and adhere to “no wake” zones ⛵️

If everyone makes small changes, we can make a big difference. 👍🏼 Which number can you commit to this World Ocean Day?

BUS has shattered records but with the end in sight, what is next? 🤔

It seems that it is not just us busily installing heat pumps across the UK. New government figures released from Ofgem show that demand for heat pumps has nearly doubled in a year.📈

The new information shows that applications for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme jumped by 93% in April compared to the same month last year. Over 2,100 homeowners applied for a grant in April alone, nearly double the 1,200 applications the previous April. We believe this is mostly due to the scheme being relaunched last October and now offering a £7500 rather than £5000 grant.

There has been a lot of negative publicity saying that the uptake of BUS has been slower than expected but these figures show that the government incentive really is making a difference.

⚠️ However, the Boiler Upgrade Scheme has a monthly budget of £12.5 million to fund roughly 1,666 grants and since October 2023, there has been an average of over 2,100 applications per month.

Since the scheme’s launch two years ago, the scheme having paid out over 25,000 grants and more than £148 million issued. With the BUS scheme due to close next year and limited funds available, we need to look beyond the current offer and explore other incentives as Jason Lindfield, Founder and MD of OHM Energy confirms:

“The rising appetite for heat pumps shows no signs of slowing, following a boom in BUS applications. After the election, I hope the new government will work closely with industry to forge a path so we secure a fair deal for UK residents to decarbonise homes and reach our climate targets. Our energy transition undoubtedly depends on additional incentives to encourage further take up of low carbon technology such as heat pumps and solar.”

Carbon Offset Tree Planting in Uganda 05/06/2024

Helping the environment drives everything we do at OHM, but that doesn’t mean to say that we shouldn’t look at more ways we can help.

Renewable energy is a great way to lower emissions and try to reduce the pace of global warming. But it’s certainly not the only way.

This year’s World Environment Day theme is a good example:

"Our land. Our future. We are .”

The question is how can we restore land that has been hastily demolished in our desire to build and make money? 🤔

Reforestation captures carbon and regenerates soil which is why OHM’s Paul Vine is a Trustee for United Nations Assocation Eastbourne and encourages local businesses to support an impactful carbon offsetting scheme.

For as little as £18 you can plant 36 tropical hardwood trees in Uganda 🇺🇬 to reduce your carbon footprint and help reforestation. 🌴🎄🌳

How does this help?

36 tropical hardwood trees of the Tri-species project will capture an estimated 16 tonnes of CO2 per year ( = 4.36 tonnes carbon) after allowing for an annual mortality rate.

Small costs. Big benefits.📈

Click on the link below to see how easy it is to make a standing order for as little as £1.50 a month and make a big difference this World Environment Day. 👇

With the right combination of funding and energy tariff, a heat pump really can be the cheapest way to heat your home 👍🏼💰

By taking advantage of the £7500 government BUS grant to have a heat pump installed, and switching to the most appropriate electricity tariff, both the upfront installation cost and ongoing energy bills can be lower than a gas or oil boiler. 📉

More heat pump tariffs are being launched so let’s look more closely at a few of them:

Using the Octopus Energy Agile tariff, which charges according to demand based on the half-hourly energy price, the savings can be considerable.

Using an average unit price of 21.57p/kWh, this would result in savings of £214 per year at SCoP 3.0 or £395 per year at SCoP 4.0, compared to running a gas boiler.

Your potential savings with the OVO Heat Pump Plus tariff could be even greater.

This tariff offers a rate of 15p/kWh for the energy used by the heat pump only; a standard rate applies to all other energy use. Based on the OVO tariff, we calculate savings of £434 for a SCoP 3.0 heat pump, and £560 for SCoP 4.0, compared to running a gas boiler.

Now, EDF has launched a heat pump tariff that will never charge customers more than the price cap. The new EDF Heat Pump Tracker tariff is available to new and existing customers with any heat pump technology.

Heat pump users that switch to the tariff will save at least £164 against standard variable tariffs, with greater savings for shifting consumption to the off-peak windows.

The tariff offers fixed discounts or three years and six hours of discounted zero carbon electricity every day. With two off-peak windows from 4am – 7am and 1pm – 4pm, customers can shift their consumption without the burden of any peak rates. With off-peak discounts applying to all electricity usage in the home, customers can benefit from unit rates which are cheaper than the price cap for all appliances.

The new tariff results from recent research conducted by EDF (UK) which shows that 67% of households are seeking greater control over their energy costs, with 42% of those without an air source heat pump admitting they have concerns about their current heating systems. The top causes for concern include rising costs (71%) 💰and environmental impacts (40%) 🌱

When the time comes to replace heating systems, 55% would consider monetary savings on their bills as the most important factor in their decision to switch 💰💰💰

Are recent changes to the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) actually helpful? 🤔

There has been A LOT of publicity about recent changes to BUS that remove mandatory loft and cavity wall insulation for some households to secure heat pump funding via the scheme.

BUS grants offer £7,500 to help households switch to the low carbon technology. While the update will help reduce the cost of installing a heat pump for some households, is it helpful to consumers and reaching our net zero targets? 🤔

Let's look at consumers. For some properties, installing a heat pump without insulation may lead to more expensive heating bills and a less efficient system. Even if the heat pump installed is correct size for the property (given the lack of insulation), the owner will be left with an oversize heat pump if they later decide to improve insulation.

❌ Negative experiences risk knocking confidence in heat pumps, leading to poor publicity with consumers potentially blaming the technology when the reality is, it’s poor advice and installation.

This policy update is about driving heat pumps sales to hit government targets to install 600,000 heat pumps a year by 2028 but risks poorer outcomes for consumers who install a heat pump without making the recommended energy improvements.

While OHM Energy supports incentives to reduce upfront costs, with heat pump sales and the take up of the BUS nationwide slower than expected, we feel that the government must not drive the market at any cost to hit their targets. This change puts the focus on installers to act with integrity and advise consumers correctly even if a heat pump is not right for their home. We believe that education is key to decarbonisation, so we offer consumers a range of low carbon options such as solar and electric boilers in addition to heat pumps.
