The Inheritance Rights of IVF Children Explained:
Whilst the process of IVF is a widely-known fertility practice in the UK, the laws surrounding the procedure often go both unacknowledged and unconsidered, when making a Will.
Many people aren’t aware that the conception of a child through IVF actually has the potential to cause serious complications, especially when it comes to issues of inheritance, and establishing legal parenthood.

What is domicile?
Domicile is a legal concept. A person will generally be domiciled in the country they consider their ‘roots’ are, or the country where they have their permanent home.

As some of you may already know, we now offer a mediation service at IDR Law with Richard Thomas CTAPS.
IDR Law aims to be a centre of excellence in helping people resolve inheritance disputes. Mediation is uniquely suited to this area of law, as it allows families to resolve their disputes in private, with far greater flexibility and at a more proportionate cost.

Asset Protection Trusts are a ticking time bomb.
Companies such as Universal Wealth, the Phillips Trust Corporation and McClures have left thousands of people in a mess.

Amazing to be nominated for The Stray Ferret business awards. 🙌
The topic of sibling rivalry is one of those that never fails to pull interest. In the case of biological siblings, it’s quite unfathomable that individuals born from the same family, same mother, father can suddenly become so distant, estranged and in complete turmoil with each other. But it happens. And, it’s common.
Here we cover some of the most epic and high profile fall outs that have hit the press.
A little bit of friendly rivalry? The topic of sibling rivalry is one of those that never fails to pull interest. In the case of celebrity it is always interesting.
Did you attend a Universal Wealth seminar?
Universal Wealth Preservation sold trust schemes promoting that they would help to protect people against future care home fees and inheritance tax.
Lot's of people signed up to the scheme and are now unaware their property is technically owned by a trust, which can incur huge fees when selling your home or even worse causing complications later when leaving your estate to your children.
At IDR Law we specialise in contentious trusts, and have successfully helped several clients remove their properties from these trusts and take back what is rightfully theirs.
We work either directly with you or often in conjunction with your family solicitor, to help resolve these complex trust issues.

Martin Lewis MoneySavingExpert.com warns about the importance of making a Will in an article featured in YorkshireLive
https://lnkd.in/eUTNjDRU
Martin Holdsworth founder of IDR Law comments;
“The reluctance of the majority of people to actually put a will in place is not a new phenomenon. We receive well over a 100 calls a month from family members seeking advice on claims after death and many of these could have been avoided if succession planning had been organised by their parents or parents whilst still alive. Making a will is the single most important step to try and avoid emotional and financial upset once you’ve gone.
With 1 in 3 now relying on an inheritance to discharge debt or fund retirement, many families have no Plan B if they don’t inherit what they expect. Dying without a will (called intestacy) rarely ensures that the right people receive the right amounts and court applications become an inevitable result. We agree entirely with Martin’s sentiment about getting a will sorted. If it’s too late for that now, we are here to resolve the fallouts that will often follow.”
Free wills could save your loved ones stress, says Martin Lewis Research suggests that more than 50% of adults don't have a will
Are you or your parents victims of the Universal Wealth trust schemes?
Universal Wealth targeted people of retirement age in seminars across the country convincing them to put their properties and savings into trusts to protect their estates from future care homes fees and inheritance tax.
These trusts leave people with unforeseen problems - losing legal ownership of their homes & receiving a huge capital gains tax bill on sale of the property, which many are unaware of.

We have helped lots of former clients of the Universal Wealth and Philips Trust Corporation crisis take back what is rightfully theirs.
Do you really own your home?
We can now tell Roger's story. Roger was a previous client of ceased company Universal Wealth Preservation.
One day back in 2015 they attended one of their ‘keep it in the family’ seminars in Sheffield.
On that day, they signed their home into a trust scheme, which almost lost them a substantial amount of their estate – 30 years of work, intended for their sons.
Did you or your parents attend one of these Universal Wealth seminars? Perhaps you have signed up to a scheme to protect your assets? If this sounds familiar, you may find that your family home is legally owned by someone else.
Watch Roger's story.

Thank you, Your Majesty.
Inheritance disputes are rising, with 1 in 4 now looking to bring a claim to fund retirement, pay of debts or simply help with living costs.
It is no surprise that claims flow in when inheritance does not land as you expected.

Hear from one of our clients...
"A family member wasn’t happy with the will. When it became apparent that they were putting a caveat on probate to stop it going through, the Kings Court Trust mentioned IDR Law as a firm that might be able to help us. We like to do our research and, out of all the firms we looked at to help us, we liked that IDR Law’s whole expertise is around contentious probate; that they don’t work in any other area of law."

Talking about death is important
At IDR Law we believe in communication, in talking about death before it happens, in planning for death to reduce the emotional (and financial) cost that can come from losing someone you love.
We’ve recently had the pleasure of speaking to Sarah Jones, Director of Full Circle Funerals, who kindly shared her story with us in the Q and A below. It was clear from the offset that Sarah is a person who cares deeply for others and does everything she can to support individuals and families as well as working to improve the way funeral care is delivered for society as a whole.

IDR Law sets up campaign to support victims of Universal Wealth Preservation Trust Scandal
Universal Wealth was an unregulated company which targeted a pool of individuals within the age bracket of 60-80, convincing them to put their properties and savings into Universal Wealth Trusts to protect their estates from future care homes fees and inheritance tax.
Universal Wealth ceased operations in 2018 leaving many clients unable to access their money and with difficulties in selling their homes.
The company director, Steve Long, was sent to prison at the end of 2018.
IDR Law have been working with former clients of Universal Wealth to remove their properties from the trusts.
IDR Law client comments: "The impact on us was devastating, such charges would rapidly eat into our life savings and leave us nothing to pass on to our son who would be forced to sell the family home to cover these debts… Fortunately, our solicitor put us in touch with IDR Law, who specialise in such problems, and, with their help, we finally managed to extricate ourselves from this invidious position.”

Do you know what would happen to your children if you died today?
Food for thought...
Many of us don’t realise that our children, if a legal guardian is not identified in a will, would be taken into the care of social services upon our death – they wouldn’t automatically be cared for by a loving friend or relative.
Martin Holdsworth, founder and director of IDR Law, came up with the idea of FRisk (Family Risk): a quick, simple and FREE way of all of us being able to assess the risks to our family should we have died yesterday, with links to carefully chosen, vetted, regulated companies who can provide you with the solutions to put the right planning in place.
