So true and very apt right now....

Learning to drive takes different people a different length of time to acheive, so it's not only irrelevant, it's also a pointless exercise, saying "cousin Joe passed in 10 or 15 hours".
Whether they did or didn't pass in 10 or 15 hours is totally irrelevant, Joe isn't you.

When we talk about how long it's going to take to learn to drive, what we are really talking about is how much is it going to cost?
Fair question....

Our answer...

Probably less than the first years insurance, definitely less than the cost of a funeral. The lessons won't take as long as it will take people to mourn your loss, or the loss of others if you get killed or kill others in a car, because you haven't had sufficient proffesional coaching and practice to get you up to a safe standard.

So how long will it take you? We don't know, we will do our best to teach you the syllabus as quickly as we can, we will match the speed of teaching to the speed you learn, that's the best we can do!

With regards to "I just want to have a go!", you can, it goes against our advice if we feel you are not ready, but not in one of our cars. Our cars are our livelihoods, we have a responsibility to make sure our other pupils have a car to learn in and do their tests in!
Lastly, we have a duty of care and responsibility to you, other road users and also the examiners!

Gaining an ADI badge is not cheap, it doesn't come without study, cost or commitment or indeed responsibility, so there is our answer, who you want to learn with is your choice, but please don't expect an instructor to cut corners, we trained hard for our badge and we are rather proud of it, what we don't want is a phone call telling us that any of you have been injured or killed!

Well, that's 2022 almost over. This year started with us all still wearing masks for lessons and tests, but finished with no PPE, but driving examiners on strike and the ever present long wait for driving tests.
We have had the pleasure of teaching many more students this year and also been able to share in the success of our fabulous students who passed their tests. So, shout outs go to the following:

Ever been behind a Learner car and thought “What the hell are they doing?, or get out of my way!”

Now imagine you are a pupil with Dyspraxia , severe anxiety, autism , Adhd, or dyslexia (this is just to name a few of the super powers you will come across in my car! )

It’s worse when you stall at lights and your mind goes to jelly, the car behind beeping the horn is making it worse, the pupil presses the gas hard and lifts the clutch too quickly, luckily the instructor has dualled the pupil and stops them moving off the light has gone back to red!

Then you have the Learner car in front of you, going a bit too slow, pain in the butt, the young girl inside has just apologised to the instructor for not being herself today, but she has just found out her dad has a terminal illness!

Then we have the pupil who’s, dad has just left her mum, she is fighting back her tears and biting her lip trying her best to keep it together, her test is at the end of the week, she has to pass.

Not forgetting where the speed limits are 20 , we will teach 20, and 20 only, the speed limit is there for a reason !
We are daily getting tail gated on the 20 zones then over taken in the most dangerous scenarios!

(Try driving at 20 in a 20 zone and notice how soon the car stops in an emergency!)

Just a few of the scenarios that I have had as an instructor, there are many more I could relate, my colleagues also have many they could share!

To you, we may just be an instructor giving a lesson, to our pupils, we are a friend, someone they can offload to, a parent figure, a counsellor and an instructor, someone they can trust.

When you are behind a learner car, be kind, patient and try to understand, inside that car is a person trying to give a lesson and maybe a lot more, believe me it’s not as easy as it looks.

(Most of us have dash cameras which are recording every crazy move people make around us , which could be used in evidence if need be..)

Teaching someone to drive , we are teaching an essential skill for life, I like to make it a memorable one you could help us in the process and be nice when you see a Learner car.

The Driving Test.

To dispel a few worries for you people with tests coming up, and indeed those of you who are thinking about starting to drive!

Contrary to what some may think, you don’t have to be a brilliant driver to pass your test, you do however have to drive safely. So how do you achieve this standard, and how do you cope if you are nervous?

1. Routines, learn them, stick to them, rigidly stick to them, they iron out your mistakes, minimise mistakes and you maximise both your confidence and also you chances of passing!

2. Know your theory, it’s not a hurdle you jump that allows you to book a test, the theory is the core knowledge for all you do in the car!

3. Study diagrams given to you by your instructor, we make these diagrams up in our own time so study them in your own time!

Nervous people usually don’t pass their test first time! Yes they do, but they do all of the above and they don’t miss lessons!

Treat your driving course like you do your A levels, study between lessons, by that I mean watch what the driver is doing when you are a passenger in the car rather than staring into a mobile phone!

As instructors we put 100% effort into teaching. If you do the same the result will be 100%. If the instructor puts 100% in and you only put 50% in, the result will be 50%. The pupil dictates the speed we teach at!

YOUR test YOUR responsibility!

If your parents are paying for your lessons, remember they have to work hard for the money, the least you can do is work hard on your lessons!
