How did feminist print differ from mainstream women’s magazines? What was the organisational structure of the Spare Rib Collective? What were the main aims and campaigns of the Womens Liberation Movement between 1972-1980?

These were a few of the questions BA History student sought to answer in her investigation of radical feminist print magazine Spare Rib.

BSc Music and Sound Design Technology student, Rachael Bowie, offers fascinating insight into her audio redesign process ⚡️🎵

"I selected 3 different 3-minute clips from Julia Donaldson’s animated stories and created a Redesign, stripping away all the original audio and implementing my own, taking inspiration from my favourite Sound Designers. I recorded all my own SFX and Foley using my Zoom microphone and used Logic to manipulate the sounds I wanted. I also recorded the dialogue altering my voice to suit the different characters, recording in my home studio. I composed original music for each story, using a mixture of MIDI instruments in a DAW and recording live instruments"

Incredible work Rachael👏👏👏

This week, Nicola Moody opened her exhibition Weaving Relations at the University of Hertfordshire gallery.

Nicola’s work as a fine art weaver has, in this research project, been conducted in negotiation with Tim Ingold’s theory of lives, and relationships, as intersecting lines.

I have been co-supervising Nicola’s doctorate in fine art for the last three years with Alana Jelinek and Antje Illner. In the first photograph here, we are standing in front of Nicola’s impressive artwork ‘Ever Evolving’ which takes up a giant wall in the university gallery. It builds and builds to monumentality. Other works shown address the ways in which different materials behave differently when woven in various ways. The exhibition is open all summer, so do visit if you can.

We are so happy for Nicola, and so proud of her achievement!

Our postgraduate MA Fine Art students will be exhibiting their work at , Hertford, from 9 July - 3 August.

This captivating installation features the works of eight talented female artists currently pursuing their MA in Fine Art at the University of Hertfordshire.

This exhibition promises to be a celebration of creativity, diversity, and the power of female voices in the art community.

Here “Making Space” is interpreted as creating room or opportunity for something to exist or happen. By exploring new ideas in paint, print, ceramics, textiles and sculpture, the artists aim to push boundaries, as they carve out their own space in the contemporary art world.

Check out I.M THE ARTIST being interviewed about her recent experience performing her incredible songs at our Propeller Sessions, which were expertly captured by Film and TV students, with lighting and sound all taken care of by students from our Music courses.

.mtheartist recently worked with our student film, lighting and sound crew to record a live version of her latest single These Days/Outspoken Introvert. 🔥

"In part 1 [These Days] I reflect on how it feels to exist in this media age where online and real life are so symbiotic. It brings about these existential questions of; who are we without all the noise? We’re constantly plugged in and we have this deep desire to be seen and understood, yet the input is often overwhelming and unfulfilling. It’s all become quite paradoxical. Ironically, the internet used to be a place to escape to, now it’s what we’re trying to escape from.”

Our Film and TV courses not only provide students invaluable opportunities to work on real sets and stages, you might just bump into Hollywood legends along the way!🎬🤩

Our very own Howard Berry, Programme Leader for the Post-Graduate Film Production programme, worked alongside legendary Hollywood film and sound editor Walter Murch, to create 'Moviola' - a fascinating documentary about film editing in the pre-digital age. ⬅📟

Walter Murch, who has edited among other movies Apocalypse Now, The Godfather and The English Patient, was the writer of the documentary, whilst Howard Berry directed. 🤩🎬
